This looks good. May be a few tears. May be some scenes some find hard

6 episodes - twice a week for 3w

Channel 4 has set the premiere date for its new deathly comic drama from the producers of The End of the F*ing World, entitled Truelove.

Iain Weatherby (Humans) and Charlie Covell (The End of the F*ing World) co-created the six-part series, which follows a recently reunited couple’s pursuit of dignified death.

The trailer accompanying the announcement introduces us to ex-senior police chief Phil (Lindsay Duncan, Sherlock) and divorced ex-special forces vet Ken (Clarke Peters, The Wire), who were once teenage sweethearts.

When they attend a friend’s funeral years later, the now retirees are reunited.
Phil and Ken join a gang of old friends at the wake, and with booze and nostalgia flowing, talk soon turns meditative.

After attempting to answer the question of what an ‘ideal’ death looks like, the gang make a drunken pact to ensure a dignified, not protracted, death. Helping each other in such a situation is, they toast, “true love.”

Among the line up are Sue Johnston (Help), Phil Davis (Silent Witness), Peter Egan (After Life), Karl Johnson (Too Close), Fiona Button (The Split) and Kiran Sonia Sawar (Black Mirror)
Upon first green-lighting the series, Caroline Hollick, Channel 4's Head of Drama, said: “Truelove is a unique, poignant and darkly funny series which deals with big themes around regrets at the paths not taken, quality of life and serious illness.

Oooh. I think Ayesha will find evidence that David got the drugs for Marion (he must have done, surely?) and then Ken will take the fall for them all.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 14/01/2024 23:33

I watched the last two tonight and would never have seen how it played out. I really enjoyed it and thought it was very well done.

Blondeshavemorefun · 15/01/2024 09:06

I didn't get why drugs in an order

Surely taking them all with whiskey would get the same effect

There was tons that wasn't realistic, but the acting and writing was brilliant. I loved the portrayal of Phil and Nigel's marriage and how you could see both of them in their daughter

SheilaFentiman · 15/01/2024 21:13

Couldn’t wait for the last two, so watched on the app. Such good acting.

flumposie · 16/01/2024 14:22

Do you think? I think she snapped when he said Marion didn’t matter, she was calming the situation before then

Blondeshavemorefun · 18/01/2024 23:40

Yes I think she snapped at Marion but she also stalked Ken down from
Killing David

But like she didn't give a shit about herself

SheilaFentiman · 19/01/2024 07:35

I agree it was a fab ending. I think she felt real guilt over Marion for not digging deeper - especially when she knew the wedding date somewhere in her head so “ought” to have spotted earlier that David was a nasty piece of work.

Yllasin · 19/01/2024 08:16

In the first episode David said to Marion "you're ugly, but in the morning I'll be sober", which was a dead giveaway as to how he felt about his wife. It was really horrible, and the other 'friends' just took no notice. I hated David for that. The series could have been good, I suppose, or at least interesting, but a lot of it was lazy writing imo. As a newly retired nurse, the hospital scenes annoyed me, did she have an IV infusion running or not? Not when she was in bed, but once she was in the wheelchair one magically appeared. 🙄 Daft.

CrossPurposes · 19/01/2024 09:25

So many that would never happen moments and too long at six episodes but I loved the cast particularly Lindsay Duncan. The twist was excellent. And they shouldn't have given Ken a dog who disappeared completely by episodes 5 and 6.

Blondeshavemorefun · 19/01/2024 09:31

The dog was at the hairdressers 😂

BIWI · 19/01/2024 11:14

Well I'm glad we stuck with it, to see how it all resolved, but I agree about the writing - not just lazy but also implausibility. Only the actors/acting saved it really!

CrossPurposes · 19/01/2024 12:02

I've only seen one episode so far. The end of that made me feel really peculiar. If you've seen it you'll know why I suppose, how would it not. Haven't read the thread until I've seen more.

Blondeshavemorefun · 22/01/2024 19:41

Def don't read the thread @martinisforeveryone till seen it

But I thought it was very good

martinisforeveryone · 23/01/2024 21:30

Just finished. Amazing. Lindsay Duncan was imo, excellent.

It really made me think over things.

I read that Julie Walters was the original Phil and shot part of it, but when she became unwell, Lindsay was cast and they re-shot.

This has probably already been discussed. I'm going to go back and read the thread now.
