This looks good. May be a few tears. May be some scenes some find hard

6 episodes - twice a week for 3w

Channel 4 has set the premiere date for its new deathly comic drama from the producers of The End of the F*ing World, entitled Truelove.

Iain Weatherby (Humans) and Charlie Covell (The End of the F*ing World) co-created the six-part series, which follows a recently reunited couple’s pursuit of dignified death.

The trailer accompanying the announcement introduces us to ex-senior police chief Phil (Lindsay Duncan, Sherlock) and divorced ex-special forces vet Ken (Clarke Peters, The Wire), who were once teenage sweethearts.

When they attend a friend’s funeral years later, the now retirees are reunited.
Phil and Ken join a gang of old friends at the wake, and with booze and nostalgia flowing, talk soon turns meditative.

After attempting to answer the question of what an ‘ideal’ death looks like, the gang make a drunken pact to ensure a dignified, not protracted, death. Helping each other in such a situation is, they toast, “true love.”

Among the line up are Sue Johnston (Help), Phil Davis (Silent Witness), Peter Egan (After Life), Karl Johnson (Too Close), Fiona Button (The Split) and Kiran Sonia Sawar (Black Mirror)
Upon first green-lighting the series, Caroline Hollick, Channel 4's Head of Drama, said: “Truelove is a unique, poignant and darkly funny series which deals with big themes around regrets at the paths not taken, quality of life and serious illness.

All episodes currently available on Channel 4, btw …

VaddaABeetch · 11/01/2024 21:27

I’m not liking the young police woman, finding it a bit silly that she would have that much time to go investigating.

I haven’t seen it, I’m up to Ep 4 but I imagine they’ll all be dead at the end?

CirrusCumulus · 11/01/2024 22:02

Just happened on this while channel hopping and loved it.

And Clevedon looked fabulous. The cafe at the end of the pier and the church and graveyard over the hill. (Anyone know which café Phil met the young PC?)

Felt for the lad in the pub!

IronNeonClasp · 11/01/2024 22:49

Really enjoying this show. Was refreshing for more episodes but I’m spent ! 😩

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 11/01/2024 22:53

Have binged.

Sorry Blondes notsorry

Edit: thick as mince I forgot to say a bit ludicrous but still enjoyable.

2Rebecca · 12/01/2024 00:01

I don't like the way they portray the young police woman. All the other characters seem complex and rounded where as she seems self righteous and virtuous and annoying. Also why doesn't she have a load of other jobs to get on with? Is it that police officers can be flippant and irreverent with a black sense of humour but young female Asian officers have to be serious and virtuous ? Can't she be more Morse/ Rebus? Does she have to have essence of Sunday school teacher?

Wingedharpy · 12/01/2024 02:25

IMHO : They need to have the young police woman's character as she is though @2Rebecca otherwise there wouldn't be much tension in the drama.

All the other "officials" involved in investigating these deaths, are happy to write them off as accident, suicide etc.
They're old folk and old folk die - end of - seems to be the thinking of all, bar Ayesha.

I wondered if she herself had been bereaved fairly recently as there was mention tonight, when she was speaking to her Mum, of coming over at the weekend "to sort out your Dad's things".
Does that have a bearing on why she seems hell bent on trying to find out why these folk died as/when they did?

She's young too and I do think attitude to death changes as we age - generally speaking.
When I was young, death was the absolute, worst thing possible that could ever happen.
As an old woman, I now feel that there are far worse things in life than death - though, the NHS and hospice care must be truly horrific these days if a rope round your leg while being smothered with a plastic bag is the preferred option!🤔

Blondeshavemorefun · 12/01/2024 05:07

Ayesha is def a dog with a bone as they say

Maybe I see this differently as I lost my husband to suicide

It was his choice and I had to respect that tho was hard at the time as obv was 37 and not 87

I have always felt if a person is ill/dying don't they get a choice to end their life

If an animal is I'll you choose to put them down and not their choice but you make it for them

True love is their choice

Still feel sorry for nigel

And relationships even more complicated

As Tom and Marion were siblings - think I missed that in e1

So a group of 6

With two siblings and a couple

Plus lovely finally went to christening but who throws a huge bash like that after

Most christenings I've been to is then few sarnies in pub

Not a full on sit down meal and massive party and discos and dj

She also said her memory was going over not buying lemons so wondered if in time she will ask for true love and then be just one of them left

@Blondeshavemorefun my theory is it’s like the Agatha Christie novel Then there were none? All gone bar one who decides it’s not worth hanging about.

I think the storyline in selling the house to give the daughter money to buy one is very much selling the idea you’ve had your chance move on.

The only humour I’ve seen is the police sergeant reprimanfing the young constable for being most. He says to the IT young man ‘she thinks she’s that Danish Detective in the jumper.’ Young man says I don’t know what you mean.

Blondeshavemorefun · 12/01/2024 08:49

@VaddaABeetch it must have a twist of something

Or maybe she will go to prison

Very weird experience today. We had to go to a funeral. When the hearse pulled up outside the entrance to the chapel, it had a sticker in the window, of the name of the undertakers - which was Truelove!

StrangeNew · 12/01/2024 17:14

I thing give it another 20 years and assisted suicide may be legal.

Choccyp1g · 13/01/2024 15:47

I don't understand why/where they dumped the little boat. If it had been put back where it belonged no-one would have suspected anything..
And did they have to walk back to the original mooring to pick up their car?

Blondeshavemorefun · 13/01/2024 16:03

I think Assisted suicide should be legalised

I said it before. If ill /dementia etx and went to go peacefully they should be allowed

You put an animal out of its misery who can't say help me. I've had enough

BIWI · 13/01/2024 16:10

I agree. And I hope it will become so a lot sooner than 20 years.

SheilaFentiman · 14/01/2024 19:39

joining thread as finally caught up on 1-4.

I like the portrayal of 70-something Phil’s marriage, affair, desires.

Blondeshavemorefun · 14/01/2024 21:47

Welcome @SheilaFentiman

How do you think it will end
