This looks good. May be a few tears. May be some scenes some find hard

6 episodes - twice a week for 3w

Channel 4 has set the premiere date for its new deathly comic drama from the producers of The End of the F*ing World, entitled Truelove.

Iain Weatherby (Humans) and Charlie Covell (The End of the F*ing World) co-created the six-part series, which follows a recently reunited couple’s pursuit of dignified death.

The trailer accompanying the announcement introduces us to ex-senior police chief Phil (Lindsay Duncan, Sherlock) and divorced ex-special forces vet Ken (Clarke Peters, The Wire), who were once teenage sweethearts.

When they attend a friend’s funeral years later, the now retirees are reunited.
Phil and Ken join a gang of old friends at the wake, and with booze and nostalgia flowing, talk soon turns meditative.

After attempting to answer the question of what an ‘ideal’ death looks like, the gang make a drunken pact to ensure a dignified, not protracted, death. Helping each other in such a situation is, they toast, “true love.”

Among the line up are Sue Johnston (Help), Phil Davis (Silent Witness), Peter Egan (After Life), Karl Johnson (Too Close), Fiona Button (The Split) and Kiran Sonia Sawar (Black Mirror)
Upon first green-lighting the series, Caroline Hollick, Channel 4's Head of Drama, said: “Truelove is a unique, poignant and darkly funny series which deals with big themes around regrets at the paths not taken, quality of life and serious illness.

There are only 2 episodes online and it’s next due on television on Wednesday.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 06/01/2024 10:03

@StrawberryJellyBelly annoying! My other watch at the mo is The Traitors and they are dropping three online a week. I like watching that in real time but could happily go all in on this.

2Rebecca · 06/01/2024 10:14

On the plus side C4 has all GBH episodes on their app and this is a wonderful series with Lindsay Duncan, Robert Lindsay, Michael Palin and Julie Walters.
Im watching this until Ep 3 of Truelove comes on line

StrangeNew · 06/01/2024 17:19

Compelling viewing so far - despite the careless plotting. Phil and Ken made exactly the sort of mistakes they’d been confident they were too experienced to make. Although that could perhaps be explained by the fact that they had set off assuming it was merely a practice run?

And I’m not keen on the way Phil has been written as someone so pushy and manipulative - she’d never need to be!

Hilarious when she was forced into a false confession to conceal a real act.

But I’m mostly watching for the breathtakingly stylish way in which both Lindsay Duncan and Clarke Peters just wear their lovely clothes. In my next life …

Channel 4 describe this as 'darkly funny' . Have yet to see anything vaguely humorous . It seems an odd subject to write a drama about , have only watched ep 1 , not bothering with the rest .

StrangeNew · 06/01/2024 19:00

I found lots of humour. And also truth; Phil feeling more alive at a funeral than in her beautiful house with her husband; Ken being much less well off than his white friends - judging by their homes; how quickly our past lives become irrelevant to others …

And it’s a fantastically timely subject to work with. Just hope the detection element doesn’t unbalance the rest.

Impatient for new episodes!

SpeculatingRooks · 06/01/2024 22:13

I've only watched the first one but don't understand why the bloke that wanted to be dead didn't just throw himself overboard from the boat?

Why involve others?

And why didn't Marion and David have to go. And how did they know where to meet, I think the postcard had a picture of the pier on it but I must be thick because it wouldn't have occurred to me that's where we had to meet!

But I will carry on watching anyway!
It's got a good soundtrack!

Interesting, as I thought it was a dark comedy at first. It's now turned more drama-thriller.

I've watched both episodes now and I am loving it. I also love how 'slow" it is - it reminds me of Wallander in some ways. Very excited for next week's episode.

Blondeshavemorefun · 07/01/2024 14:28

Finally seen 2 so avoided thread till now

So she lied saying had an affair rather then tell the truth

Or even lie and just say meeting as the death of their friend threw them

Her poor husband

It's a good cast. Good to see what was young actors now old /age and still get good drama parts

Not sure phil and Ken can do it again

StrangeNew · 07/01/2024 14:32

Hmm …

Four more episodes. I wonder if they’re going to branch out into mercifully offing troublesome policewomen!

And will any of the remaining four still be alive at the end of the story?

Blondeshavemorefun · 07/01/2024 16:05

I am entrigued where the story will go

Have watched first 2. I’m not sure.

Surely he could have just jumped off his boat if that’s what he wanted? Same with Sue Johnston- an overdose?

Why the need to have someone kill you when still able to do it yourself.

If I truly loved someone I wouldn’t want to put them in the position of ending up in prison!

BIWI · 10/01/2024 08:58

I agree.

So we have Phil, an ex copper, who leaves all manner of forensic evidence at the scene, along with the burner mobile for her husband to find.

And now we have David, who is an ex doctor, who - surely? - would know how to help his wife die without suspicion?

I could understand the first scenario, as Tom's death happened in a way that Phil and Ken didn't plan - they thought they were doing a dry run, to rehearse how it would work, but were talked into it by Tom. So I'm intrigued to see how they deal with Sue's death.

It's a good cast and good writing, which is what's keeping us in. But that depends on how they deal with things in the next episode!

Blondeshavemorefun · 10/01/2024 12:06

Well put @BIWI

E3 tonight

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 10/01/2024 23:27

Just watched E3 and found it a hard watch. It said at the end all episodes are available to stream.

Lurleene · 10/01/2024 23:38

I'm enjoying this very much, particularly for the cast and performances.

But I was extremely tickled to find out that Ken is the deep voiced singer on disco classic Boogie Nights - 'Gotta Keep on Dancin Keep on Dancin!'

StrangeNew · 11/01/2024 13:17

Ha! … Finished it.

But was it on another thread that someone guessed - a thing. (Since this thread is spoiler free.) I’m full of awe for that poster, whoever and wherever they are.

I would have preferred a more coherent story - but I guess it was like life - messy and unpredictable …

Blondeshavemorefun · 11/01/2024 13:36

Just finished 3 as well - too tired last night and did find it hard hitting

The doctor David will surely get the blame for the medication

Mario seems quite with it when they did the whiskey drinking and pills so sure she could have managed it by herself

Not sure why David said about the order of pills

Just take all the pills and whiskey

Hope they left their car nowhere near her house or copper will be on the ball esp as she knows is old people on the boat

Will she ask to track their phones to know they were with her

And suss wiping down their fingerprints / they would be there as friends and been in their home

Tom Preferred man to woman wonder why they added that

And felt for the neighbour who will find her in the morning

So she just drifted off sleep - to her death

Then there was 3 left

I thought tonight e4 was the last bit just looked and says 6 so. It sure how this will end

Nigel was awake so wonder what time it was

StrangeNew · 11/01/2024 13:43

Ah - I‘ve watched all the way to the end of Ep 6. Will be careful not to say anything!

Blondeshavemorefun · 11/01/2024 13:50

I'm def entrigued as obv something is up but I don't binge

Not have the time to watch 3hrs in one go 😂

OP posts:
BIWI · 11/01/2024 14:22

I'm assuming the story of Phil and Nigel's marriage will become relevant at some point? For now, I'm just finding it irritating, and it doesn't seem to add anything to the overall story.

Blondeshavemorefun · 11/01/2024 14:26

They don't seem in love

And I did get from e1 doctor David and Marion were married. Thoight just 5 friends

Augustus40 · 11/01/2024 16:30
