It’s bonkers and if it wasn’t Emerald Whatserface would have probably never been made

EachandEveryone · 22/12/2023 20:41

I wonder how many folk will watch it expecting some Downton Abbey thing. My parents would be horrified😄

cuthbertthecat · 23/12/2023 07:58

I may go down and watch the second half in a minute. I watched the first half last night whilst the kids were at a hobby but I had just got to the 'vampire' bit when they arrived home so thought best to end there.....

Am enjoying it so far though!

Ostryga · 23/12/2023 08:13

Started watching it last night and loved it. Going to finish the rest tonight whilst I wrap!

cuthbertthecat · 23/12/2023 09:57

Christ. That was intense.

weekfour · 23/12/2023 09:58

Intense in a good way? Or intense as in you're tired now?

cuthbertthecat · 23/12/2023 10:01

In a good way I think but it's a bit full on. I see why it gets mixed reviews but I loved it. I found some of it quite upsetting.

And to lower the tone the actor who plays Felix is a treat.

Teddleshon · 24/12/2023 09:32

I thought it was horrible. An absolutely ludicrous depiction of the British Upper classes and contained some really nasty, gratuitous scenes. To me it failed on every level.

Ostryga · 24/12/2023 09:37

Finished it last night, the grave scene was er… interesting!

I really enjoyed it though, loved the characters, especially Oliver. Would definitely watch again.

Pelham678 · 24/12/2023 09:39

I loathed it. Awful, horrible people being nasty to each other. Yuck.

ChristmasSteps295 · 24/12/2023 09:43

I mostly enjoyed it. I thought the plot was a bit odd. It didn't quite make a huge amount of sense, but that helped keep me intrigued.

Gorgeous to look at. Loved the locations and the outfits. The music was enjoyable too. I liked hearing Destroy Everything You Touch by Ladytron in there, which was a very appropriate nod to later events.

I'm not very easily shocked though. I definitely wouldn't recommend to someone who was!

VivienneDelacroix · 24/12/2023 12:04

I really liked it and am obviously some kind of deviant as I didn't find it shocking particularly. No more than many films which are a 15 certificate. The graveside scene isn't graphic and doesn't involve a body. I was just thinking how long it would take him to clean himself.

It was very derivative and I wondered how intentional that was. Not just to Brideshead, but there were elements of The Secret History, American Psycho, Interview with the Vampire...But it was still a brilliant film. I did guess early on how it would end, but I don't think that mattered.

Rosamund Pike was brilliant.

twiddlingthumbs69 · 24/12/2023 21:30

Just watched it. Having 'mixed' with the types in the past, you'd be amazed how accurate some of it was. (Apart from the grave scene, as far as I know!)

Summasolstice · 24/12/2023 21:35

I was concerned about mud getting in his foreskin

I’m still trying to work out if I liked it. I don’t think so. It felt like it was trying really really hard to be edgy and clever and not getting there. Was a bit ‘6th form’

Haha eww. I hadn't considered his mucky foreskin 😂

Brird · 25/12/2023 08:14

I liked the way it was filmed, and the eccentricities of the characters. I was expecting a lot more from the plot though, it was all a bit simplistic, and the last 20 minutes dragged, though I liked the final scene.

AzureBlue99 · 25/12/2023 23:29

@Summasolstice nailed it. It was very 6th form.Richard E Grant is bezzie mates with Theo Fennell, Emerald's dad. Must be the only reason he agreed to appear in this bilge. Beautiful house, awful film. That Oliver actor, I just kept thinking he is so going to look like Taggart when he is older.

RaininSummer · 27/12/2023 16:00

I thought it a very weird watch. It's up there with Midsommer for me.

Pebble21uk · 27/12/2023 19:49

Very self indulgent and a pretty thin plot. I agree with the 6th form comment - and given that Emerald Fennell used to write Young Adult fiction (she had a YA book called Monsters published which also involved murder) I think this is from the same canon!

Cantonet · 27/12/2023 20:14

I think it's truly terrible.
I watched about 40mins & then gave up.
I found it unpleasant. On the other hand i absolutely adored Brideshead Revisited. This was derivative drivel.

GonksAreNotJustForChristmas · 28/12/2023 14:04

I enjoyed it. A few WTF moments.

chickadeeky · 28/12/2023 14:15

I feel like the wtf moments were a really cynical way to get people talking about the film, and judging by my tiktok feed it worked

It's one of those films that I mostly enjoyed but is ultimately shallow and forgettable.

A film about posh privileged people directed by a MEGA posh person with very little charm.

Rosumund Pike was good though. What was the point of the Carey mulligan character?

I liked her quirky character and I thought their friendship was amusing especially how it was casually mentioned what happened to her.

I think the point was to get the leading lady from your Oscar winning first film into your new one to give it more weight and cachet... a visible approval of your work!
