Is anyone else looking forward to this? The first part of the final season is on Netflix from 16th November (four episodes), and the second part (six episodes) from 14th December.

I thought the previous series was a bit boring so I'm hoping for more drama this time round.

Harry is shown to be sulky, jealous and feeling very hard done by.

When really, this description suits Married Harry much better 🙊

I’m intrigued by the portrayal of W&H. Judging by interviews - so words from their own lives - it was William who sought therapy and help while Harry held in his grief and was secretly mad at everyone. Yet the Crown had William being the latter and Harry as some sort of pathetic attempt at being a rebel (smoking weed, oo-er, sticking it to the man 🤣).

Yes, it’s like they’re showing Harry as who he’s shown himself to be in the past couple of years. The Netflix execs must be smarting about the money they lost on their deals.

kenyaswhiterefrigerator · 15/12/2023 18:14

@magicstar1 I'd forgotten about the Harry/ Netflix money for nothing deal. That's a good point. Perhaps this is Netflix's revenge!

I recall Harry being one of the most endearing members of RF at the time. Attractive and charismatic. He came across on the series as anything but.

He seems like a sulky man child, more as to how he's presented himself recently rather than his image at the time.

Yes, they’ve essentially taken information directly from Spare rather than for what is was probably like for a traumatised teenage boy at the time.

I do wish they’d done the bit about Charles slagging the press off whilst on a skiing photoshoot. They seem determined to make our king look like a boob and that was definitely one of his more boob-like moments

Bennyandthevets · 15/12/2023 18:33

I also think it’s a shame about Harry’s portrayal. He comes across as quite sneering & sinister when by all accounts he was a good laugh. I still like Harry (don’t come for me 😂). I also found it a bit depressing how they all seem to hate & resent each other- Harry & William, the Queen & Charles, Harry & William & Charles.

Bennyandthevets · 15/12/2023 18:36

I agree the Ritz was a lovely episode. Such a lovely bond with Elizabeth & Margaret.

wobblyweasel · 15/12/2023 18:41

Well I've just watched The Ritz episode. I'm crying 😢

Yes and Harry also had a cracking head of hair!

Just watched the first 2 episodes of the 2nd half. What a snoozefest !
The first episode confused me, it looked like a major time jump at first as the Harry/william actors have been aged up alot compared to the first half of episodes. But it’s only a couple of weeks after the funeral ! Sloppy writing and casting there.

Next couple of episodes need to be better or I’ll not make it to the end of the series.

Yes they were very dull. I’m very sorry their lost their mum but an hour of a teenage boy moping around doesn’t make good TV. It would have been much better if they’d done a time jump from the funeral to William starting Uni

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 15/12/2023 21:39

I'm finding the William and Kate stuff cringey and badly acted

1975wasthebest · 15/12/2023 21:43

I've watched it all and in general it was sluggish and a bit dull, but then that's partly Peter Morgan's fault because he chose to focus on a period (1997 - 2005) that just wasn't hugely eventful for the RF (obviously I don't mean the death and aftermath of Diana).

Hadn't they originally planned to end it after the 5th series? Really they should have. As you say, these years were pretty uneventful for the royals. Hence their need to make whole episodes out of William moping around Eton, and stilted dialogue between Carole and Kate.

Season 5 was by general agreement the weakest of the whole lot, so it might have been better to cut out some of the most boring episodes, condense all the Diana stuff into one season, and leave it there. Elizabeth Debicki was outstanding, but was too much Diana stuff in the first part of this series, especially as it's been dramatised so many times already.

I had to double check you said Peter and not Piers 🤣

Wolfathedoor · 15/12/2023 23:31

I’ve just finished watching it and I just say have found it really excellent. Some bits were a bit sluggish, yes. However on balance I thought it was remarkably well acted and the script was excellent. The ending was just a tear jerker. It’s a very hard thing to get right but they did an excellent job on the whole I feel.

Houseplanter · 15/12/2023 23:57

Just watched the first 2 episodes of the last batch. I agree rather dull.. could all of been done in half the time.

Having said that though I did have something in my eye towards the end of episode one, when William went to highgrove.

The actor playing Harry is dreadful.

LBFseBrom · 16/12/2023 00:43

I thought it was pretty good, sobering in parts. There was some blatantly obvious dramatic licence, ie Carole Middleton; I'm sure she isn't and wasn't anything like her portrayal and the actress who plays her is hideous! However, that was quite funny in its way and reminded me that this is a drama. All the other parts are well done. Princess Margaret was very touching. I loved the conversation the late Duke of Edinburgh had with William. I shall re-watch in due course.

I do think all the stuff about Carole Middleton and her scheming were frankly libellous though. I’d be spitting mad if I were her.
Kate must be very upset by it too.

Yep. William has actually spoke about the Arbil it’s the Middleton have given him. Which is no doubt what he has needed after his own barnyard explosion of a Jeremy Kyle family

Mischance · 16/12/2023 09:55

I think The Crown is an excellent series - the acting and cinematography are splendid. But if I thought it was all factual I would probably not like it. It isn't and is not meant to be - it is artistic licence, and often quite clever in that regard.

Borageandchips · 16/12/2023 09:56

I haven’t finished watching all of it but I think the portrayal of Carole Middleton was completely sexist and misogynistic.

My dds are at uni at the moment and although we discussed the choice of where they were going and took them to open days etc there is no way I could influence what course they were on, and who they socialise with once there. And as pp said, it’s not as though she had any influence over William either!

Passepartoute · 16/12/2023 10:30

IcedPurple · 15/12/2023 17:51

Same goes for the William actor. A 15yo with wrinkles? I don’t know why they just couldn’t cast some cracking young people! It just felt odd and misplaced.

They are reluctant to cast minors because of legal restrictions on working hours and so on. That's why teenagers are usually played by actors who are clearly older. Derry Girls is a very good example. They were all supposed to be schoolgirls but looked like, and were, adults.

I agree that the William actor looks way too old to play a 15 year old, but I guess in later episodes he'll be about the right age.

Odd then that they cast a different actor to play young Kate. Not sure how old she is, but it was the actor who played Darrell in Malory Towers, wasn't it?

1975wasthebest · 16/12/2023 10:35

Meg Bellamy who plays Kate is 21.

Ella Bright played the young Kate. I've now checked and she's 17 - presumably around 16 when they were filming.

Sorry - I missed the 'young' bit and also just realised I couldn't remember the younger Kate, which kind of says it all about how generally forgettable this season was, compared to the previous ones.
