Have been in a bit of a dry spell for a while; I am admittedly very fussy...!

I am not too bothered about genre (though comedy is least favourite); any drama really, sci-fi, thriller, historical... Though it has to have a really amazing script, well-written, believable, well-developed characters and, as a bonus, a flawed hero that I can fall a bit in love with... I do also get put off by poor IMDB scores 😅

I am a bit impatient, so if it hasn't gripped me by the first episode, I usually give up (though have given some a few episodes before doing so!).

I have loved:

The Americans (possibly all-time favourite!)
Breaking Bad
The Vampire Diaries
The Handmaid's Tale (the last two series less so)
Buffy
Firefly
Hannibal
Line of Duty (up to about series 4!)
13 Reasons Why series 1 😳

Quite enjoyed:

Quacks
Ghosts
Bridgerton
Narcos
Black mirror
Under the Banner of Heaven
True Detective
Broadchurch series 1
Criminal: UK
Dopesick

Tried to like, but couldn't get into:

Grey's Anatomy
Homeland
Fringe
Ozark
Band of Brothers
This is us
Justified
Peaky Blinders
Happy Valley
The Serpant
24
The Hour
Our Friends in the North
True Blood
Dexter

Series I am considering...(!):

Toby Fleischman is in Trouble
The Alienist
Penny Dreadful
Money Heist
Daisy Jones and the Six
Fargo

Help!

Crash landing on you, South Korean with subtitles, never watched a subtitled series before but wow, Honeslty the best series I’ve ever seen! Only watched a couple of months ago but going to watch it again soon

DeathMetalMum · 12/08/2023 21:01

Bones.

Loved it, so many series. Really good characters. Sometimes uncomfortable watching due to the nature of the series but also really compelling.

The Americans

Possibly one of the best series I've watched.

neleh87 · 12/08/2023 21:02

Mad Men. One of my favourite ever shows and ticks everything on your list.

Call My Agent, the French version on Netflix. There's some humour but a lot of drama.

Russian Doll.

Ladychatterly86 · 12/08/2023 21:03

The Witcher would fit your Sci Fi/ Fantasy needs.

Also agree with a PP that Yellowstone and all it’s prequel/sequels are excellent.

DutchCowgirl · 12/08/2023 21:03

Penny Dreadfull is the best! I still dream about it sometimes. Not to be missed!
The alienist S1 is also good.

My other favorites:
Taboo
Stranger Things
Wheel of Time
Vikings

ThePoetsWife · 12/08/2023 21:04

Happy Valley
blue Lights
Schitt Creek
Couples Therapy

Bonfire23 · 12/08/2023 21:05

Some of your loves are also mine especially Buffy!
Second whoever said Bones, I loved it and need to watch it again
Prison Break, the good doctor, good karma hospital, my girl are ones I've all enjoyed

Happy Valley.. I would say try again depending how much you've watched. I watched half an episode and thought this is shit. Tried again and genuinely adored it and binged the whole thing

Oh sorry, just seen you didn't like Fringe.

Have you seen Supernatural? It gets very stupid towards the end but there are no end of crush worthy characters.

I did really want to like Fringe, but it felt a bit too unbelievable (yet somehow The Vampire Diaries felt totally believable 😆).

Haven't seen Supernatural, have considered it previously, think it was the hundreds of episodes that put me off.. May give it a go... Any particular season it starts to jump the shark?!

I agree about The Americans!

I have considered Bones, may give it a go...

Although ITVX is a crap app, it has a lot of great series on it that I managed to miss. Like Grantchurch. I loved it, the 50s costumes and everything. Quite emotional in places.
This lead me onto Endeavour which is set in the 60s. Very different vibe though, the characters are so fully realised. I never watched Inspector Morse so I'm doing that now. The acting in the early episodes is horrendous, really hammy, so much scenery chewing from resting serious ac-tors. John Thaw and Kevin Whatley make it worth it though.
I also adored Glee which I'd never seen. OK, some of the bursting into song bits are cringey but it genuinely made me cry in parts. And as long as we're being honest, I really enjoyed Emily in Paris. Trashy but compulsive 😉

CheerfulBunny · 12/08/2023 21:16

Oh and if you've got Disney+ Moonknight is outstanding. That might be up your street if you like supernatural-type stuff.

QuestionableMouse · 12/08/2023 21:17

Leverage is great! Leverage Redemption slightly less so but still enjoyable.

I absolutely love Justified!

Bigjamsandwich · 12/08/2023 21:19

I’m really loving Heartstopper right now - such fantastic writing with believable characters 🌈

I recently binged Detectorists! Bear with 😝It’s an underrated show that was so well written, very funny with believable, flawed characters. A little gem 💎

Definitely Years and Years by Russel T Davies. What a bloody brilliant, clever, mind blowing show.

Also It’s a Sin by Russel T Davies is heartbreaking and powerful.

Up to season five is the "original" story (aka it was meant to end at season five) but honestly every season has good and bad episodes.

Thisriveriswild · 12/08/2023 21:21

The Sopranos!

DeathMetalMum · 12/08/2023 21:22

@Sunnydays41

Ah just skipped back to read your OP and seen The Americans on the list! I'm always suggesting it. Bones is great several people where I work are currently watching it. We have just started Criminal Minds on reccomendation from a few people but only a series in. It's good so far.

Emmaemmeline · 12/08/2023 21:22

Sweet magnolias
Maid
Lincoln lawyer

And , not your sort of thing probably ,
I’m ashamed to admit ….. but I love Below Decks … all of them , Med , adventure , down under , sailing yacht

allabitmadtbf · 12/08/2023 21:28

I love all the Below Decks too. I also loved The Detectorists, From and Good Omens.

pyewatchet · 12/08/2023 21:33

The Wire.

Darkmodal · 12/08/2023 21:34

I've just started Daisy and the Six and I'm obsessed on episode 2!!

Band of Brothers is a cut above everything else I've ever seen. If you can try and get into it, it's amazing. I've watched it over and over.

Also, The West Wing is just fabulous. I've watched that on repeat too!

Darkmodal · 12/08/2023 21:34

Oh and Emily in Paris is fluff but it's really watchable!

Squeakbeak · 12/08/2023 21:39

'From' on Prime. Best thriller I've seen in a long time. It's Very graphic so if you're squeamish, it's not for you.

Also just finished a series called The 100. It's a modern day sci-fi type show. I streamed it so not sure where you would be able to watch it in the UK.

EvelynSalt · 12/08/2023 21:41

Yellowjackets on Paramount+ is one of the best series I've found in a long time. For one thing, amazing soundtrack. Unusual storyline and a great cast. Its 🤌🏻

Freepo · 12/08/2023 21:43

They’ve already been said but I’m seconding:
