Spoilers etc.
Everyone posts when they’ve seen the episode so probably best to avoid the thread until you’re up to date.

Late to this… persevered through it but god, it’s awful. Miranda is sooo annoying. All the woke stuff is just so trite. I am kind of interested in C...

Patricia Field - costume designer.

thebellagio · 19/08/2023 10:13

I would absolutely watch a seema spin off.

Seema’s summer in the Hamptons

she’s FABULOUS!

JMAngel1 · 19/08/2023 10:31

I’m not sure Seema has enough depth for a solo spin off?

thebellagio · 19/08/2023 10:34

It’s hard to tell really because they’ve not developed her enough. But sometimes that’s where it works - it’s why Frazier worked but Joey didn’t, because it’s a peripheral character with potential

either way, she’s definitely been the best of the new characters

Ridemeginger · 19/08/2023 10:49

I think there was some good character development with Seema in series 1. Successful 50 something woman with a background of traditional family expectations. Bit of clash of cultures. Looking for a first love in middle age. Navigating new friendships etc. But she’s been woefully underused in series 2, with too many characters jostling to have their stories get enough air time. The Ravi story feels too convenient and too rushed, and as I said above, shades of Samantha!Richard Wright without all the build up. I actually think a spin off with Seema, Nya and Lisa could work, as they have laid the groundwork for this. Also, Charlotte and Miranda still have unresolved story arcs. Perhaps that’s what is being hinted at in that picture posted above with Lysette in Carrie’s apartment? Maybe the series will continue, with everyone except Carrie/SJP (assuming she gets her happily ever after with Aiden).I can sort of live with that.

thebellagio · 19/08/2023 11:05

You know they’ll decide to do a spin off with Che….

Ridemeginger · 19/08/2023 13:09

Oh yikes, let’s hope not - a real life Che Pasa!

i don’t think the role has done Sara Ramirez’s career any favours, and I don’t think continuing to play her is a great move for whatever statement she is trying to make in her real life about identity. Che seems to be universally despised, even with the attempted kitten led rehabilitation. I really don’t get what the writers were thinking with the last episode, making Che just hateful again, after weeks of trying to get everyone’s sympathy.

I have been waiting for more of a back story about all the stuff Che claims she went through. But all they keep coming back to is her having been a slightly overweight woman, and that’s the sum of her trauma and the basis of her escape into an NB identity. Seriously, who gives a fuck about that? She’s no different to half the women in the world. She managed to snag a hot (and seemingly devoted) husband whilst a bigger woman, and shag half of NY (by her own bragging admission) off the back of cutting her hair, shortening her name, buying different clothes and forcing her “I am sooo speshul” pronouns on everyone. Not to mention the stand up career, Netflix special and tailor made pilot, opportunities a minuscule population of people in her industry get to enjoy. Where is the trauma? Where is the struggle? There isn’t any, there’s just a big pity party anytime the world doesn’t see her on her self constructed pedestal made of playing cards.

And the whole attack on Miranda was utterly horrific. Even in the name of comedy. Didn’t Che pursue Miranda in the first place? Whilst Miranda may have felt attracted to Che as a personality, I doubt hitherto straight Miranda would have pursued the sexual angle without Che initiating it - she just didn’t have the bandwidth to go there without significant assistance. So for Che to then talk about Miranda as if Che was preyed upon by some sort of LGBT cos playing straight woman is utterly disingenuous and disrespectful. And to then have a go at Miranda’s family too - how exactly did they impact Che? Not one bit, just 5 minutes of self righteous indignation from Che, because Che thought Miranda was in an open marriage - ie Che pursued Miranda believing her to come with the baggage she later complains about. And conveniently and hypocritically forgetting her own baggage - her husband who she never got round to divorcing- whom she doesn’t bother telling Miranda about, and was quite happy more or less trying to sexually assault Miranda in a non consensual threesome.

So no, I hope Che is consigned to the bin of TV history, she is a massive bore and a despicable human being, who has played a big part in ruining a beloved franchise.

Rant over!!

Ridemeginger · 19/08/2023 13:36

Rant not over. Oh yes, I remember now, Che was attracted to Miranda because she was a “Mama Bear” over Brady taking Che’s pot. So much for Miranda burdening Che with her family baggage!

aqiarious · 19/08/2023 15:03

I agree that the new characters are mostly background, there being too many, so it's a scene here and there and not much room for development or connection.

Liked

Miranda's dress again - with the pleated skirt part, similar to the red one from last week

Carrie's blouse, and her last outfit, slouchy top and midi skirt, very pineapple dance vibe I thought!

Scene with Steve and his stall and that he was happy. It made me want to visit the place (Coney Island not Steve's stall).

Disliked

Aidan crying 😱 I know many of you said so, but I wasn't prepared for it to be that bad. It went on for a while. Beginning of the end though for him and Carrie.

Carrie bring dismissive of Miranda's feelings in relation to Che

Che

Charlotte's odious children. How rude

Charlotte's clothes, which I used to like, are now too twee.

That said I've enjoyed the last few episodes (after giving up initially) and will be sad if it does end, while agreeing with others here that I'm not sure where it would go.

Andylion · 19/08/2023 16:01

I finally watched the latest episode.

The biggest problem with AJLT is that they lost one main character, Samantha, and a supporting character, Stanford, and replaced them with four characters they are trying to make into main characters.

I agree with the universal dislike of Che. I don’t care enough about Lisa, she’s just busy, busy, busy!!! and I forget that Nya exists until she appears on my screen.

If they had focussed on Seema and kept the other new characters as truly peripheral, it would work better.

Greywhippet · 19/08/2023 16:23

How can Carrie still have Che round to dinner AND guilt trip Miranda into still having to come? I’m outraged!

Netaporter · 19/08/2023 17:01

So at my fantasy SATC ‘last supper’ would be

Carrie
Big
Miranda
steve
charlotte
harry
samantha
smith
lily
rose
brady (you can’t ignore the kids)
Anthony
Stanny
Seema (I know she wouldn’t be there if Big was still alive but still)
Magda (lovely character)

can’t then decide between the best of the cameos:
Matthew McConaughey
John Bon Jovi
david Duchovny
Bradley Cooper
John Slattery (I love madmen)

and:
Trey (alrighty then!)
Bunny (best MIL character ever)

100.% NFI
Che
anyone connected to Che (Toby/Judy/creepy husband)
Aidan (leave him in the past)
The Russian
Berger
Richard Wright (teeth/ungentlemanly behaviour)
sam smith
geri halliwell

on the fence:
Natasha (love her as an actress)

anyone else got thoughts?

LittleBearPad · 19/08/2023 17:10

Richard Wright (teeth/ungentlemanly behaviour)

He had really odd teeth, you’re right. i really didn’t see what Samantha saw in him

Lottapianos · 19/08/2023 18:00

'John Slattery (I love madmen)'

Yes! Good call. Put him in instead of Big. I'm allergic to Big

No kids! They're all AWFUL

And definitely no Che

thebellagio · 19/08/2023 18:07

I agree with everything @Ridemeginger says

Netaporter · 19/08/2023 18:32

@Lottapianos can you imagine the mumsnet post if it was no kids?

AIBU? My friend is having a last supper at her apartment that I helped her to buy by selling my engagement ring because she had spent all of her money on shoes. She even kept her sweaters in the stove. She did pay me back but has recently become widowed and is now moving. She’s having a ‘last supper dinner’ catered by a private chef but my kids are not invited even though she is very close to them? WWYD?

TheYadaYada · 19/08/2023 18:57

People I don’t want at her last supper are -

any of the kids; can’t bear them
Carrie’s neighbour with the awful fringe
Steve - I can’t forgive him the accent

Lottapianos · 19/08/2023 18:57

'She’s having a ‘last supper dinner’ catered by a private chef but my kids are not invited even though she is very close to them? WWYD?'

😂 yep, what a heartless cow!

Well, in my defense, I'm just back from lunch with two friends where one of them brought her 3 year old so I've had enough of kids at adult events! And the kids in AJLT are truly awful and would hate every second anyway

GellerYeller · 19/08/2023 19:26

Can we also add Skipper 😂 I loved that they referenced him this last episode. And yes please to Bunny. Alrighty then!

iamthattree · 19/08/2023 20:00

I have an Aidan question please. He was a partner in Scout and a friend of Steve's. He's still clearly a friend of Steve's so does that mean Miranda was in touch with him throughout?

QueefofSheena · 19/08/2023 20:21

I think it was implied that Steve bought him out. He said something about Aiden doing well out of Scout. Presumably when it had the unmentioned move to Brooklyn 😁

SunRainStorm · 19/08/2023 20:21

That's a good point.

It kind of undermines that whole conversation the women had a few episodes ago where they had no idea what had happened to Aidan and Carrie had had to cyberstalk him for info.

They still co own Scout, presumably Miranda would have known he sold his furniture business, gotten divorced, where he was living etc.

So it seemed from the latest episode that he didn’t hang around as a silent partner of Scout for very long. But he’s invested in the Coney Island stall, and for some reason they have chicken impressions as a private joke. On that note - I did laugh when Expensive Taste Carrie saw Steve’s new stall and said “this looks amazing!”. It looks like a shit hole, Carrie 😂

😂 So much this. Not a chance she’d want to be anywhere near it, never mind thinking it was amazing.

Crikeyalmighty · 19/08/2023 23:21

I think one of the problems is very poor male acting - I exempt the guy who playsHarry and also Antony. LWT s husband and Aidan are incredibly wooden and poorSteve clearly has problems due to his hearing issues.

I did totally cringe for Miranda-
