First thread….

Spoilers etc.
Everyone posts when they’ve seen the episode so probably best to avoid the thread until you’re up to date.

Late to this… persevered through it but god, it’s awful. Miranda is sooo annoying. All the woke stuff is just so trite. I am kind of interested in C...

Doesn’t SJP actually live in a similar building or not far from where Carrie’s is supposed to be? I can’t remember where I read that though. Probably Heat magazine in the 90s so terribly out of date! 😂

I assume this is her house, although you don’t see a lot and it doesn’t give much away as to the location (maybe it does if you know NYC well?!)

Location is easy. She lives down the street next to Perry st where the apartment is. Theres a cute little synagogue down there. Its my favpurite part of nyc and I cant reallythink what the London equivalent would be.

KillingMeDeftly · 11/08/2023 09:46

There's an SJP shoe store around the corner from the apartment.

Is it Notting Hill esque? I ask as someone who has never been to NYC but you say cute and that’s what I picture.

Urgh Aidan’s ex. Couldn’t bear her. How entitled and ludicrous - warning your ex husbands partner not to hurt him based on what he told you of his side of the story. Carrie took it well; I would have told her to jam it.

CosyCoffee · 11/08/2023 11:02

Sorry this is a bit off topic but I just had to share; since Che first appeared it's been bugging me who her super arched, extra far apart eyebrows reminded me of. I knew it was someone from my tv childhood. Last night it came to me - Mary Beth Lacey!

I hope this helps anyone else who was similarly struggling 😂

'Last night it came to me - Mary Beth Lacey!'

Oh gosh, you're not wrong!

Ridemeginger · 11/08/2023 11:15

Great spot, yes, there is a resemblance between Che's looks and Mary Beth's! But that's the end of the similarity!! Che being a nob, and MB being one of the finest characters in TV history. Some kind soul uploaded all the series of Cagney and Lacey onto Youtube, which was my exercise binge watch for a few weeks - quite wonderful, and very ahead of its time (or rather, shows you how the 80s was a lot more progressive for the depiction of women on TV than the highly regressive 90s). Tyne Daly was stunningly beautiful in C&L, as was Sharon Gless, who has a wardrobe to die for in the series (and looks oddly very modern, 80s fashions being back into style).

CosyCoffee · 11/08/2023 11:26

Cagney and Lacey was amazing, and it also had the best theme tune! For some reason my mom and I used to lie on our backs and bicycle our legs in the air for the duration of the music 😂

That's another thing AJLT is missing, a theme tune!

😂😂😂I love this, but can I ask you - why? What prompted this? Did it just happen once, and then you just kept doing it? No judgement from me though. My DS and I used to do a jig at the end of Gilmore Girls, every single time. Sometimes when you start something, you just can't stop.

It's become pretty much the norm for shows to not have a theme and play random old hits during the end titles, themed around whatever's gone on in the episode. The end titles to ADLT are pretty much identical to those of Divorce (which I'm currently rewatching with DH, and really enjoying - SJP is fantastic). I guess the original SATC theme was not appropriate (too cheeky and upbeat), and they couldn't come up with anything as iconic.

Lottapianos · 11/08/2023 11:58

'Divorce (which I'm currently rewatching with DH, and really enjoying - SJP is fantastic)'

Would love to watch this - can you find it online? I know that Sharon Horgan wrote series 1 and I love her nearly as much as I love SJP

Crikeyalmighty · 11/08/2023 12:00

@Lottapianos I loved that series. !!

Crikeyalmighty · 11/08/2023 12:02

@ReeseWitherfork not really- I would say more Marylebone .

CosyCoffee · 11/08/2023 12:08

I don't remember what prompted it, but my mom was very into aerobics at the time so I suspect she suggested it once and it was so enjoyable that we then had to do it every time! I've just remembered that we also air bicycled, at a slower pace, to the theme tune of the film program with Barry Norman that changed its name every year - or Film 81 as I always think of it! Another absolute banger of a theme tune.

I just mistyped theme tune as them tune, which would be a good name for an annoying slightly ominous musical composition to herald the appearance of Che in an episode. A but like a cross between the Mastermind music and Crazy Frog.

NeedToThinkOfOne · 11/08/2023 12:11

Cagney and Lacey 😍 the first proper drama I was allowed to watch. That theme tune! Gilmore Girls theme tune is equally as memory evoking. My most recent theme tune love is Succession, I never skipped the credits as I loved that music.

This week’s AJLT ep had a Mr Buble tune on end credits. It fitted nicely actually, but agree @CosyCoffee it’s missing a distinct theme tune.

Ridemeginger · 11/08/2023 12:18

@Lottapianos I am streaming it on Sky Comedy. When I watched it first time round, I thought it was a MPK project, I hadn’t clocked that it was written and produced by Sharon Horgan. It always felt like the story of parallel universe Carrie, had she married an Aiden or Steve type and had kids. Trying to watch it this time round without seeing Carrie, but it’s hard. SJP’s character, Frances, has all the hallmarks of Carrie (not entirely likeable and in denial about her own behaviour), however her wardrobe is gorgeous without tipping into some of the crazy Carrie wears.

tribpot · 11/08/2023 12:41

MB being one of the finest characters in TV history
Could not agree more. I've been catching episodes of Cagney & Lacey on YouTube and both Tyne Daly and Sharon Gless are legends.

😂I want to hear this!

Ridemeginger · 11/08/2023 12:44

@CosyCoffee Your mum sounds ace! And yes to Film [Year] theme tune! so iconic. I wasn't until I was much older that I realised it was from a Nina Simone song.

Did you ever watch Ally McBeal? Whenever the Lucy Liu character (Ling) appeared, they'd play the "witches" theme from Wizard of Oz. They could do something similar for Che!

Lottapianos · 11/08/2023 12:45

'I am streaming it on Sky Comedy.'

Oh brilliant, thanks!

papasmurfdontpreach · 11/08/2023 14:17

I'm watching on Now TV which is totally trolling Big by advertising Peloton every break 😂

aqiarious · 11/08/2023 14:21

Liked

Dresses - Carrie's cream dress at the event, the green dress (even though overdressed, that's typically Carrie anyway), Miranda's red dress with pleated skirt.

Miranda is more like her old self at times

Disliked

Aidan's y- fronts and painted on abs 🤢

Interesting events taking place off-set (Carrie at the farm, meeting the boys).

Too many characters and it means their scenes (rather than stories) are shoehorned in. Thinking of Lisa and Herbert's brief scenes particularly.

aqiarious · 11/08/2023 14:25

Che does have a look of Lacey!

WhyDoesItAlways · 11/08/2023 15:31

I did wonder whether showing one of aidens sons on video chat means that he's been cast and therefore we will be seeing more of him. Otherwise would there be much point in casting someone just for the sake of a short video call? Interesting that he's the son who doesn't get along with Carrie. I'm hoping he'll come to NYC and cause some havoc.

Netaporter · 11/08/2023 15:48

@CosyCoffee i feel like we could definitely be friends in real life. PMSL at MB and the air cycling 😂
