I don't think Fauve embarrasses easily. She posts about the Patrick stuff on Instagram.

CaptainMyCaptain · 23/06/2023 21:59

I get very peeved when the nans are wheeled on. Ageist or what! The very first series was win by Ann who was in her 80s. She wasn't quirky and didn't have purple hair or a niche hobby but she was an excellent sewist so less of that please.

FriendsDrinkBook · 23/06/2023 22:04

Ann was amazing wasn't she. Such a talented woman. I was in awe of her tailoring skills.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 23/06/2023 22:05

I think what was meant there was what the Masterchef fans on MN call a Nonna moment, i.e. contestants talking about how much they owe to a deceased relative and how they are doing this for said DR - rather than objecting to older contestants.

FriendsDrinkBook · 23/06/2023 22:06

Yep. @Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g classic x factor tactics.

2Rebecca · 23/06/2023 22:46

I want more emphasis on sewing well and creating beautiful or practical garments people want to wear, not stupid bows and wacky designs. I don't care how many dead relatives they have, everyone dies so we all have them. I want the contestants to be interesting because they sew well and have an eye for colour not because of identity politics stuff or other non sewing hobbies. There has been nothing so far I've wanted to make. It's all been a bit fancy dress costume

MouseMinge · 23/06/2023 23:12

I liked the West African week. There were some good bits in this week's episode and it was definitely better than crochet blanket week. I can't see them fucking up children's clothing week, so I think we can all breathe easy on that.

MouseMinge · 23/06/2023 23:14

I'm also glad that I've now realised that when someone said that May Martin was in the first couple of series and I was confused and now I know that, of course, May Martin was the judge and she also wasn't Mae Martin the comedian who, as I suspected, hasn't ever been on the show.

Binglebong · 24/06/2023 00:49

I agree about the West African week, very interesting. A few years ago they had a pattern challenge which was done with Japanese style instructions (very different from English patterns), I'd love to see more things like that.

Cutting up crochet made especially for the show or paintings I can do without.

Maireas · 24/06/2023 08:27

I thought Garment of the Week was a strange choice, Fauve's ugly 80s black pvc and lace? Hardly the most creative. Lizzie's dramatic eye jacket was better, and Asmaa's transformation was amazing.

I agree. It was ugly.

Halsall · 24/06/2023 12:29

I think it’s a bad sign that they’ve quite recently taken to starting with the same formula as Bake-Off; a 'hey, aren’t we wacky?! 🤪' -style introduction, where Esme and Patrick dress up in stupid costumes and Sara Pascoe bellows some unfunny joke (like most of her jokes tbh), ending with the ritual WELCOME TO THE GBSB!!

And cue recap and titles.

I so wish they wouldn’t. But that too seems indicative of the way they want to take it, and the way many of us don’t want to see it.

FriendsDrinkBook · 24/06/2023 13:12

It'll be interesting to see if they're losing viewers. The show was cancelled one time before so it could happen again.

Maireas · 24/06/2023 13:37

The art makeover challenge was just so silly and had nothing to do with sewing skills.

Emotionalsupportviper · 24/06/2023 13:42

jay55 · 23/06/2023 15:20

@MoirasSaggyBundles totally agree.
The canvas challenge was like the ridiculous technicals making obscure things no one has heard of or would want to eat.

The program makers need to understand the audience are not thrill seekers, we're not after new new new and are more than happy with a repeated challenge. We want warm and cosy.

Seconded!

I am happy to see the same or very similar tasks in different series.

I just want to enjoy some lovely creative sewers* at work.

*I don't like "sewist" and I won't use it. So there!!!

I wasn't talking about nans appearing on the show (I'm 70 myself for heaven's sake!) I meant when everyone starts "I'm doing this for my nan/ sister/ bother's best friend" stuff. And I stand by it.

Competitive "nanning" isn't what the show is about.

Thank you Gaspode - that's exactly what I meant.

OK fair enough.

Well, that's all right then.

I agree. I really dislike the stupid intros. I can't imagine that any of the viewers are sitting there going "Ooh goodie, another hilarious intro! This show is so much better with these in".....

Yes very much so

I think competitive nanning could be added to my favourite phrases list.

I'm a bit perplexed about Fauve's dress winning GotW. I couldn't see the connection to the brief at all. Shame about Tony W though. He just had a mare of a week and if he had been even slightly better it would have been bye bye Vicki instead.

The brief was surrealist art, and Fauve's dress was an interpretation of the surrealist painting I Saw Three Cities by Kay Sage. The dress wasn't my taste but I can absolutely see why Esme and Patrick loved it, and it won garment of the week.

I seem to be in the minority, but I loved this week's theme, particularly the skirts in the first round even though most weren't great. The creating sculptural garments out of painted canvas reminded me of when I was at St Martins, one of the projects I did was making clothing out of canvas and paper. It was lovely to be reminded of that.

Maireas · 24/06/2023 19:02

Well, I thought Fauve's dress was the least like art and the least creative. Anyway, it's all subjective because I thought the art was terrible anyway!
Asmaa's creation was brilliant as usual.

MoirasSaggyBundles · 24/06/2023 21:51

Fauve's dress bore no resemblance at all to "I Saw Three Cities". More like, "I Saw Three Meatloaf Videos."
