I think if you’ve had staff and security around your whole life it’s all you’ve known and you’re used to them, as well as not viewing them as actual people. I loved in the first series where Kendall’s struggling to find his coffee machine and says his staff have Thanksgiving off and his guest (can’t remember who!) is impressed at his benevolence. In the end he has to summon someone to work the machine and admits he still has a skeleton staff…

“New Jess”

I took that as a hint that she's not actually doing all that well financially, or maybe that she's got no staff to shop for her. I also thought Peter's keenness to pitch his deal to the siblings felt a bit like he realised he couldn't actually sponge off her as much as he'd been hoping to. Or am I barking up the wrong tree?

I agree @MarkWithaC - I think Caroline gave up a big chunk of her financial settlement when she married Peter. She does seem genuinely to be infatuated with him, and made an unwise decision.

My theory is she’s a typical thin, rich, upper class person. They never have anything in the house to eat. The frugality is typical upper classes, comes from never having enough liquid funds to maintain giant drafty piles and the grounds.

slamfightbrightlight · 09/06/2023 07:51

Didn’t she get a financial bump when she screwed the kids over at the end of series 3?

SunnyEgg · 09/06/2023 07:52

I think it was playing to stereotype rather than no money

Yes, I thought so too.

Also in Series 2 (I think) she had the huge house in the UK and a house in Barbados so I think she's probably okay just not in the same tax bracket as her children.

slamfightbrightlight · 09/06/2023 09:00

And I don’t think Peter’s scheming has anything to do with money, it’s everything to do with status

MustardGreenAndPlum · 09/06/2023 09:12

There’s a scene when the kids are back in the U.K. for Logan’s 80th and they have dinner with Caroline. She serves them up the equivalent of one slice of pheasant and a carrot. She has never had any food in the house. It’s the same with the matriarch in “Riviera” - she has half a cucumber in her fridge. I wish I could be that disciplined (“Oh, I’ll buy the Kit Kats for the kids I’m on”) and I too will be a size 6 with nice clothes.

MustardGreenAndPlum · 09/06/2023 09:13

the kids I’m on”)?? … for the kidsnomnom… stupid autocorrect ruined my joke.

MustardGreenAndPlum · 09/06/2023 09:15

Series Two Episode 7.

Malbecmoron · 09/06/2023 12:58

Yes the food thing is about her character and her class etc. I found this amusing as I have a very rich and posh friend who often comes out with stuff like this.

Spamham · 09/06/2023 23:17

I love Logan’s summary of England in that episode "I mean look at this fucking place; slaves, cotton, sugar... This country is nothing but off-shore laundering for turning evil into hard currency... And now it just lies here, living off its capital sucking in immigrants to turn it and stop it getting bed sores.”
😂

Verysadatwork · 10/06/2023 09:48

Logan was sometimes very astute!

Almahart · 10/06/2023 10:47

He's right, we still are, look at all the Russian money we've laundered through London

SunnyEgg · 10/06/2023 16:13

I found the scathing remarks good copy, the episode with the France line in the retreat and Europe as soft was good too

And the Mattson NYC one

Although the US has its own issues, it kind of sets up their thinking

Tots678 · 10/06/2023 19:09

Knobbies never heard them called that - I think it was a made up word that ‘quaint English’ people use.

Definitely 'knobby bit' for the end of a French stick here

Netaporter · 11/06/2023 03:55

Yes, always the end of a loaf was the knobby in my childhood home too. We also had the ‘wartime pickle’ 😂

WhathaveIdoneagain · 14/06/2023 15:03

We are watching season 1 for the first time. DH and I enjoy it so much, as we know the characters from later seasons so well. We watched Austerlitz last night, and I laughed so loud that I woke DS up 😊

denimdonut · 14/06/2023 18:19

Barry isn’t doing it for me. Does it get better?

Lottapianos · 14/06/2023 20:58

'Barry isn’t doing it for me. Does it get better?'

I watched Season 1 and then bailed out. It was ok but I wasn't bowled over

tribpot · 14/06/2023 21:09

Same here @Lottapianos . I watched season 1 and started season 2 and thought hmm I can't really remember what's happening and don't particularly want to go back for a rewatch.

Btw if anyone is wanting a limited series recommendation, I'm watching The Offer. It's on Paramount+ so I've actually bought it on Amazon Prime. It's about the making of The Godfather and is really good.

Well, this is … peculiar. Following global advice I’ve tried ‘Barry’ - and couldn’t get through even one episode. Why? Is it because every single character is unattractive, or because every room looks like a set design student’s idea of a shabby room, or because the dialogue seems clunky, or …?

What it’s telling me is that Succession was more than a happy accident, it was a miracle. It was … perfection.

Me, @LottapianosGrin Don’t know if it gets better as one episode was enough.

Still puzzled over what other people liked …

FriedEggEverywhere · 04/07/2023 09:06

Finally had the chance to catch up with the last season.

oh my, the ending was just perfection.

I was quite broken hearted for these awful, awful people. How it’s possible to have so much as a shred of sympathy for such arrogant self-serving fucks is quite incredI Le, but therein lies the skill of the writing and acting.
