Ah I saw the Poker Face thread @JaneFondue ! I've only seen the first episode and really liked it, I didn't want to click on the thread until I'd seen a few more in case I got spoilers. Where are you up to?

My favourite episode was the finale on the boat in Croatia when they needed a blood sacrifice.

It is not a quote, I found it very fitting when Kendall played "Rape me" by Nirvana during Shiv's townhall meeting.

We are just watching season 1 and loving it. Of course, we understand it way more than we would have done at the time.

Connor had a lot of zingers at the charity do when he had a meltdown over the butter. I also didn't realise how loving Marcia was.

This is one of my favourites too. When Logan tells Kendall about how he and Marcia used to read the history 'big boys' together in bed and what she said about the blood sacrifice being about how much they loved someone – that they thought that person's death would make the sun come up.

And the one where Logan makes Kendall go to visit the waiter's family and he and the family are in the living room while Kendall sits alone in the kitchen. Nothing happens – apart from Kendall visibly dying inside. Watching it is like a long slow gut-punch. It's jaw-dropping.

Quotes: I find it hard to think of a better one than 'Cat food Ozymandias.' Grin
Although in the same scene, when Conor suggests Kendall buy a shelf in the mausoleum: 'I don't know, I had trouble finishing a Scotch with him.' And an earlier season when Conor says something about how he and Willa flew commercial and had to deal with 'some aggressively refrigerated cheese.'

'I re-watched a bit of Peepshow yesterday and you can definitely feel the Jesse Armstrong DNA - beautifully crafted writing that is both funny and deeply discombobulating, plus brilliant characterisation (everyone is awful but in a very human, knowable way'

That's such a perfect description of JA's writing. The discombobulation and the darkness are SO satisfying

I am on Episode 4. It's so much fun. I think I have fallen deeply in love with Natasha Lyonne. I want her to be my bestie.

Sorry, position taken!

LOVE Natasha Lyonne and how she's turned her life around. Even so I was in two minds about Poker Face because I heard they were heavily borrowing the Columbo vibe but she's nailed it! Utterly watchable!

Sisisimone · 06/06/2023 10:23

I'm going to start Poker Face now. Absolutely loved her in Russian Doll.

MarciaSaysANumber · 06/06/2023 11:07

Thank you for the Atlantic link, @haribonoyoudont - beautifully articulated argument.

I’ve just swallowed both seasons of ‘Industry’. Fairly absorbing, and one or two character types that haven’t already been done to death. More ‘This Life’ than ‘Succession’ but some mildly jaw-dropping moments. Worth watching.

LoganRoy · 06/06/2023 15:09

I love the British upper/upper middle class. You can have been married to a billionaire and be in your holiday home in Barbados but you still freeze knobs of bread.

British food got SLATED in Succession - especially when they were discussing Scotch Eggs! To be fair, everything Mummy served was rank.

Sisisimone · 06/06/2023 21:37

The wartime pickle comment is still making me chuckle

My favourite quote:

“That is an imaginary cat. Now please Fuck Off!”

Hilarious 😀

Just watched the last episode, not read the whole thread so sorry if this has been discussed. In the last scene Kendal is stood right next to the railings then walks back and sits on the bench. Is this him deciding not to kill himself or am I reading too much into it?

They filmed a version where he started climbing over the railings and Colin ran to restrain him, but it didn’t make the cut. So I don’t think the intention at the end is that he kills himself.

tribpot · 08/06/2023 15:07

I think from the interviews with Jeremy Strong and Mark Mylod the intention was definitely to convey that Kendall was considering suicide.

TrioofTrumps · 08/06/2023 15:14

It was a bit weird, who thinks about suicide with their bodyguard stood yards away.

MarciaSaysANumber · 08/06/2023 15:17

But it was ‘enough’ that his spirit died as he walked out of the Waystar offices …

Now he’s just wandering around the city as a sort of soulless ghost.

A very rich soulless ghost 😂

If you're used to having bodyguards/staff around you all the time I think you'd barely notice them. Remember the incredulity when he turned up at the townhouse after Logan's death and the siblings discovered that he had a child? People who are 'just' staff probably barely impinge on the Roys' consciousness.

He’s too much of a narcissist to go ahead with it.

Malbecmoron · 08/06/2023 16:23

One of my favourite lines is from Caroline in the last episode about the dinner she served 'hearty food but meagre rations'. It just rings so true from my contact with some posh, thin women.

I took that as a hint that she's not actually doing all that well financially, or maybe that she's got no staff to shop for her. I also thought Peter's keenness to pitch his deal to the siblings felt a bit like he realised he couldn't actually sponge off her as much as he'd been hoping to. Or am I barking up the wrong tree?
