Why does it matter how Matthew defines himself? Surely this programme is about sewing not gender or physical appearance.Stop the irrelevant personal comments. Reeks of bullying.

The sewer himself makes the point that a frill on a women's swimsuit can cover male genitalia.

Matthew is clearly making a statement.

I don't see why that's a problem.

Binglebong · 31/05/2023 22:17

I really feel for Gillie - her confidence has gone completely. It should be raised. I suspect that when she is sewing at home she is excellent or she wouldn't have got on the show.

It’s not a problem. Dress how you want to etc but it’s still a statement.

Agree she seems a really nice genuine person. I would hope that the producers would do at least one time trial in audition/recruitment. This show isn’t like some of the talent ones where people get put through because they are really bad and to be laughed at by the audience.

Nameinspirationneeded · 31/05/2023 22:27

That might come out wrong - I’m not laughing at Gillie just think there was quite a big gap in her level and the others.

dropthevipers · 31/05/2023 22:09

No, no no! Its Sally Thomsett you're thinking of (I think)

no, I double checked on google and found a clip of Sophie T reading a story, and it is her, and as someone just said she is in the wonderful Detectorists.

Ah, ok, fair enough.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 31/05/2023 22:42

I agree that Gillie probably does beautiful clothing when she's in her own environment and can take as much time as she needs. Not everyone can concentrate well in a busy group environment. I've been quilting for decades and only recently started dressmaking and I know that I work best in little bursts with regular coffee and Mumsnet breaks so would struggle to have the time management acumen for something like Sewing Bee.

MorrisZapp · 31/05/2023 22:45

I do feel that a bag and a swimsuit shouldn't be in the same show. I want to see clothes!

Gilly was a dear but yes, she had possibly stepped out of the wrong lift, Victoria Wood style.

knittingaddict · 31/05/2023 22:52

Phew, Gillie has gone.

You ignore Esme and Patrick at your peril. It will only annoy them and, if it comes down to deciding between two contestants, the annoying one will get the chop.

You could see that her days were numbered when Patrick gave her a Paddington stare over her bag fabric choice.

That is completely irrelevant to the post you've quoted.

SoupDragon · 31/05/2023 23:29

I think there was an early leaver last year where the sewer was completely thrown by the time given for the challenges.

I'm a better sewer at home than Gillie has been on the show BUT I'm not being timed and I bet she is a far, far better sewer than I am when not under any time pressure!

SoupDragon · 31/05/2023 23:26

No it isn’t.

Matthew is making a statement about gender by sewing a “female identifying person” costume with a frill that can “disguise things” and in the transgender flag colours.

It’s very performative.

Of course it's irrelevant. The quote was specifically asking people to stop making irrelevant personal comments. Nothing else.

This sort of shit ruins these threads.

SoupDragon · 31/05/2023 23:46

It's not "performative" it's who he is. He made a swimsuit relevant to his life. Other sewers made swimsuits relevant to theirs. Are they also performative?

Floralnomad · 31/05/2023 23:57

Just watched on catch up and the correct person definitely went out , she didn’t even fulfill the brief . If some of the others had just gone for a basic swimsuit they may have made a better job of it .

No they aren’t. Nobody else made a clearly political statement.

Gilly is REALLY annoying me.

Gilly sounds exactly like my MIL 👀

Clymene · 01/06/2023 00:22

Matthew won't last long because he's a one trick pony. Sewing Bee is about adaptability. Poor Gillie was just so out of her depth I felt a bit sorry for her. I hope she enjoyed it. It's a very brave thing to go on a t show really.

Ladybrrrd · 01/06/2023 03:45

It's Pride season, and I think for Matthew to try and create an inclusive piece of swimwear is a good thought. Statement is I guess 'trans people exist, and they might also like to wear swimwear'. Should they not? Can't see what's so harmful about that statement myself. Even good old JK Rowling said 'wear what you like', didn't she?

Actually I think diversity was the name of the game with the models being different shapes and one having a disability, which I loved to see. As a fuller boobied woman myself absolutely fantastic to see that represented!

Ladybrrrd · 01/06/2023 03:46

Anyway can't wait for next week! Can't see myself warming up to Keith Lemon particularly, living Asmaa and Vicky!

FriendsDrinkBook · 01/06/2023 05:22

I think the wrong person went last night. The only time I've seen a m2m as bad as Matthew's survive was in s6 when Matt stayed over Therese in 80s week. Matt had won the pattern challenge that week so went through based on that iirc.

Matthew however didn't do great in all three and his m2m had butchered bust darts , a gaping back etc. He had a very bad week.

FriendsDrinkBook · 01/06/2023 05:28

Swimwear is a tricky though , I made mistakes when learning such as stretching the underarm area when adding the swimwear elastic. Though fitting shouldn't be so difficult imo as stretch fabric is more forgiving I find.

A great episode with some interesting challenges I thought. I always feel like they should practice more with stretch before the bee begins , I know it can be a little marmite , but it's good to have varied skills.
