Any main channel, Netflix or Prime please?

I'm thinking of the sort of thing that is usually 3 to 4 parts and shown over consecutive nights.Channel 5 do a lot of these things - usually set in super smart houses the character couldn't afford. Sometimes they are longer but normally less than 5 episodes

i've seen lots but am sure there must be ones I haven't seen.

Stuff like these (which I have seen as samples):

Finding Alice (ITV husband falls down bannisterless stairs of dream home he designed) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt11127412/

The Catch (Ch 5) (seemingly perfect new bf of daughter freaks out her fisherman father) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt11127412/

The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window (Netflix) woman believes she sees murder in house opposite, parody thriller https://www.imdb.com/title/tt13315324/

The Stranger (Netflix, Harlan Coben) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Stranger_(British_TV_series)

Finding Alice (TV Series 2021) - IMDb

Finding Alice: Created by Roger Goldby, Simon Nye, Keeley Hawes. With Keeley Hawes, Isabella Pappas, Nigel Havers, Kenneth Cranham. Alice's husband of 20 years, Harry, falls down the stairs and dies soon after the couple move into the dream home he des...

I just watched Chloe based on this thread. Truly, truly excellent. The acting was top notch. Erin Doherty is one to watch.

ABoyCalledBasil · 19/05/2023 16:25

@rivercobbler I'm glad you liked Chloe - I think it was me that was raving about it. I also thought Pippa Bennett-Warner was brilliant - I'd never seen her in anything before. She has a lovely voice- I could listen to her all day.

She also played the best friend in Obsession (Netflix) which I watched based on this thread. She's obviously got a nice line in best friends with psycos drama speciality!

What's the British one about body swapping? That was quite good. Behind Her Eyes

WaitingForSunnyDays · 19/05/2023 17:59

Walter Presents "Torn" is a good watch, although 6 episodes.

I wasn't a huge fan of this because I'd read the book first which I thought was better. It wasn't bad and worth watching but think some people might think it was a bit too woo/supernatural-ish for this genre. Not the right words but don't want to give spoilers.

Oh my god I can’t abide watching anything on ITVX, it’s dreadful! It doesn’t remember where you stopped watching something (and neither am I once I’m a few episodes in), starts you at the end of a series automatically, takes ages to get anywhere on their homepage, the adverts you can’t fast forward, just crap! I’m sure I’m missing some brilliant things because I can’t stand it. And I agree with the pp about Britbox and refuse to use it too 😂

sashh · 20/05/2023 08:17

I finished Deceit yesterday.

It's based on the Rachel Nickel case but this is told from the POV of the undercover police woman.

TheChosenTwo · 20/05/2023 15:29

Thanks for the suggestion of the nest, I watched it all today! Loved it although found the final episode a bit weak. Won’t hold it against the programme though, when it’s only 5 episodes and not countless long series you don’t feel so invested 😂

MadCatLady27 · 20/05/2023 21:06

Blue Lights (BBC)

Line of Duty

Alice in Borderland (Netflix - the end of episode 6 to me was the only thing that's come close to "urgent exit required" on line of duty - the reveal was fantastic)

The Purge (Amazon prime)

Panic (Amazon Prime)

The Victim is absolutely brilliant!!!!

But what am I missing about Obsession? So many people on this thread rave about it. I thought it was very predictable and the romance between the son and Anna completely unbelievable

XelaM · 21/05/2023 10:39

I loved Blue Lights though

ABoyCalledBasil · 21/05/2023 15:06

@XelaM

I thought it was very predictable and the romance between the son and Anna completely unbelievable

I agree that there was zero chemistry with the son but I enjoyed it in a weirdly you know this is going to be a total car crash but you can't look away until you see it happen way.

There was some good acting but too much unnecessary sex I think.

I'd rate it as entertaining, worth watching if you like the genre despite some short comings but not don't miss/excellent example of the genre - like Chloe for example.

I'm working my way through the recommendations of ones I haven't seen. I'm now watching Compulsion (Ch 5, paramedic with PTSD) I'm enjoying it as the plot is good and has an unusual theme (as compared to usual drink/drugs etc) and Anna Chancellor is v. good (at least so far). However, the lead is really annoying both as a character (why the hell are you doing that type) and as an actress and has a very strong Liverpool accent which (sorry but it's true) I don't like listening to at all and find really irritating.

I can't remember if I saw it recommended here or on Digital Spy. DS has a thread for Netflix recommendations and a thread for Amazon Prime recommendations too. Secret City is on Netflix. There are two series, this is series 1 with 6 episodes. It first aired in 2016 in Australia I think, 2018 here, but I don't think it loses anything for that.

Summary. Beneath the peaceful facade of Canberra, there is a secret city of deals and divided loyalties, lies and opportunism. Political journalist Harriet Dunkley thinks she knows the city, but as she forces her way closer to the truth she discovers a conspiracy. The subterfuge that she finds threatens her career and life, in addition to endangering the freedom of all Australians. The drama series is based on novels by Chris Uhlmann and Steve Lewis.

Word of warning, don't look for plot summaries for series 2 as it will spoil the ending of series 1.

sashh · 22/05/2023 04:52

I've just finished 'Inside man' - thank you for the recommendation from a few of you.

beguilingeyes · 22/05/2023 11:04

State Of Play? JohnSimm and David Morrisey and it's absolutely fantastic.

ABoyCalledBasil · 22/05/2023 17:21

@mum2jakie I watched Compulsion (Ch 5) about the paramedic w PTSD.

If you like Channel 5 dramas, have you seen Compulsion (four episodes). First three episodes were great, fourth one was a real weak ending.

I actually did really enjoy it - despite my annoyance at the Liverpool accent/bad acting of the main character.

BUT

You really weren't wrong about the ending!!!! It was shocker of a bad ending!

spoilers

.

.

the idea that after all that trouble, anger, complex arrangements and so forth that she'd just return the money was mad.

I also didn't really understand where the Hayley Mills/mafia don/money lender woman came into it. It wasn't really clear to me how or why the Anna Chancellor woman had got involved with her.

and all of this was predicated on the need for money due to the gambling - which the Anna Chancellor character would never have known about from the start.

and the friend writing that in her diary about her mate wishing she was dead- as if she would. Its the type of think if you thought it you'd never commit to paper.

and if the friend hadn't made such a fuss about it, the main woman would never have read it when she got it back.

and then having read it, you wouldn't just gloss over it and make up

and it didn't make sense why the diary was stolen in the first place -that is so obscure. why would she randomly break into the friends house?

and the whole thing with the drugs audit and them being back in time. It's just so implausible.

I know a lot of ending complaints there but I did like it!!

mum2jakie · 22/05/2023 17:39

Yes the ending and its neat tying up of all the ends was ridiculous. I admit that I hate open endings too but so unbelievable for Anna Chancellor to return all of the money after going to so much trouble to seek revenge. Would have been better to end on episode three, maybe with the main character getting a call from her boss about the missing medication just as she realised that all the money had gone.

sashh · 24/05/2023 02:44

This is not a drama but I can recommend watching 'Estonia'.

For anyone who doesn't remember the Estonia was a ferry that sank, quite quickly in the Baltic sea in 1994 with a huge loss of life.

The first episode is about the actual sinking the other two look at what happened afterwards and questions why bodies were not recovered and what caused the sinking.

Wow just started watching this based on your recommendation. It's SO good! And the female lead is also the lead in The Victim. She's great but much younger here. Loving this show.

ABoyCalledBasil · 25/05/2023 18:26

Continuing my progress through some of the recommendations
I watched Deadline (now on Netflix originally Channel 5) about a socialite accused of murdering her husband and enlists a journalist to help find the killer.

Enjoyable -first couple of episodes are excellent - but got increasingly bizarre with a terrible (and annoyingly implausible, plot holed) ending. Still would give it a worth watching rating but be prepared to be annoyed.

I still don't understand who the weird assistant/lawyer Mrs Molnar or whatever her name was, was exactly or why she was so welded to Natalie and willing to help her with more extreme matters.

It's amazing. They made a film, which has Russell Crowd and Helen Mirren, which is pretty awful.
Slow Horses, with Gary Oldman and Kristin Scott Thomas is more recent and amazing.

Really enjoyed State of Play, and a what great cast! Heard that the 2009 remake with Russell Crowe wasn't that good.

I just started watching The Night Of (on Now TV) and it's brilliant. It has 8 parts, so a bit longer than the OP wanted, but very gripping. Very high imdb rating too.

Obsession on Netflix. Four parts, unpredictable, well acted and gripping.

This was terrible
