Any main channel, Netflix or Prime please?

I'm thinking of the sort of thing that is usually 3 to 4 parts and shown over consecutive nights.Channel 5 do a lot of these things - usually set in super smart houses the character couldn't afford. Sometimes they are longer but normally less than 5 episodes

i've seen lots but am sure there must be ones I haven't seen.

Stuff like these (which I have seen as samples):

Finding Alice (ITV husband falls down bannisterless stairs of dream home he designed) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt11127412/

The Catch (Ch 5) (seemingly perfect new bf of daughter freaks out her fisherman father) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt11127412/

The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window (Netflix) woman believes she sees murder in house opposite, parody thriller https://www.imdb.com/title/tt13315324/

The Stranger (Netflix, Harlan Coben) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Stranger_(British_TV_series)

Finding Alice (TV Series 2021) - IMDb

Finding Alice: Created by Roger Goldby, Simon Nye, Keeley Hawes. With Keeley Hawes, Isabella Pappas, Nigel Havers, Kenneth Cranham. Alice's husband of 20 years, Harry, falls down the stairs and dies soon after the couple move into the dream home he des...

Really enjoyed Malpractice although the ending could have been better (won't spoil it!).

I haven't yet seen Malpractice but I think a weak ending is a constant problem in this genre. See my comments on a few of the ones I've watched here on this thread.

It's one of the (many) reasons I rated Chloe so highly was that I thought the ending was very clever.

Inside Man on Netflix is brilliant. Written by Stephen Moffat, starring David Tennant and Stanley Tucci.

Fartooold · 09/06/2023 13:38

Agree about Inside Man - really enjoyed it.

The Sinner, series 1 was absolutely brilliant, highly recommended.

I liked this and thought it had some good acting but I did think the ... slight hint at a spoiler here....

loook away if you haven't seen it....

continuing restraint of the woman in the house was a bit implausible

and possible second series spoiler.....

it's obviously set up for a second series. I read somewhere that she (restrained woman) is the Tucci characters wife that he supposedly killed?

Have you seen Our House? ITV drama available on ITVX.

I have. I liked the premise (Scary shit that that can happen!) and it was interesting but I can't bear Martin Compston. No idea why but there is something a bit irritating and runty about him that just annoys me! Sorry to any fans out there.

It's good though and I'd recommend to lovers of this genre if you can get past the Martin Compston issue....

The Commons, but it’s 8 episodes. Set in Australia in the near future, climate change, crumbling social order, is it right to have a child in such a world. It’s absorbing and dystopian. With Joanne Froggatt.

If you’ve got Alibi, Signora Volpe with Emilia Fox, set in Tuscany, where she solves crimes, is rather good. The Chelsea Detective, also on Alibi, 4 episodes, is also good.

midsomermurderess · 09/06/2023 22:49

The Commons is on Prime.

Ice cream girls, on itvx
based on a Dorothy koomson book, she's a great writer with gripping stories.

Little Steve? I'm really enjoying "for her sins" although there's the irritation factor of thinking how can you not see this...?!

That is the problem with a lot of these programmes. 90% of the time the whole thing falls apart if the central character had actually communicated with a subsidiary character (usually a husband/bf but sometimes a best friend, a relative, a parent, a teacher of their child, the police) B what the problem was.

Like in For Her Sins - she isn't telling her husband. Why? it makes no sense but she's telling this Emily geezer at the point she has already suspsected something is off.

The reasons for not telling the subsidiary character are ridiculous.

That one with Stanley tucci and the Vicar was a case in point. I get the whole I've got a duty of confidentiality to my parishioner but - when you are about to be arrested for child porn, I really don't think silence is the order of the day.

Absolutely. How many signs does one woman need?!

Spoiler alert - I couldn't really understand why the video of the man in the hotel didn't arouse more suspicion. And why your leave your kids with a virtual stranger and let her keep living in her house when things were off.

The David Tennant one also hit ludicrousness.

LBFseBrom · 10/06/2023 21:34

'Smother' is very good, excellent characterisations, starring Dervla Kerwan. It's set in Ireland but could be anywhere. One of those dramas concerning a family and an unexpected death, where everyone has secrets.

Willieholloughby · 14/06/2023 22:30

I've just watched The Twelve because of this thread. Definitely worth a shot if people are still looking.

LBFseBrom · 16/06/2023 10:13

Just started watching, 'Savage River', on My5. It is set in Australia, about a young woman recently released from prison back to an unforgiving community. I don't yet know whether she was actually responsible for someone's death (the reason she was imprisoned), or if she was unjustly convicted, but it is quite good so far. Lots of characters.

Another series with interesting characters but this time set in Mexico, is
'The Surrogacy', about an unfortunate girl who is persuaded to carry a child for a couple but there is far more to the story than that; it's quite sinister. It is also very good at highlighting social attitudes.

HappiDaze · 16/06/2023 18:55

I've just started watching The inside man thanks to this thread

It's so different and much better than I thought it would be

I forgot about the best Harlan Coben short series - The Five . It's the best of all his series. Excellent plot and acting and truly suspenseful with many twists.

For those who enjoyed ‘the night of’ (it’s fabulous) it was adapted from BBCs ‘criminal justice’, on iPlayer at the mo. It’s excellent. Both seasons.
