Best thing I've watched in AGES. Dark, slow, black comedy?, simply brilliant.

After the first episode DH and I were a bit on the fence as it just seemed to be people shouting and swearing unnecessarily at one another. However we are now three episodes in and it is growing on us. Worth sticking with!

I'm the same, I'm on episode 3 and still not bothered about the characters. I'll keep going and hopefully get into it.

DontBeAPrickDarren · 12/08/2023 12:37

I have to say I don’t hugely care about any of the characters but there’s something about the way the show is made that is really engaging. Three episodes in series 2 are just perfect TV (Copenhagen?, fishes, forks). It sucked me in in a different way to most things we watch.

Crinklycut · 13/08/2023 19:22

I agree. This is phenomenal tv. So glad there is a thread on it. I think Carmy is up there with Paul Mescal in Normal People and McNulty in The Wire. It’s a really special performance.

Has anyone tried to make the beef sandwich? I actually miss the close ups of the beef sandwiches in series 2.

Just watched the Christmas episode. So moving.

Furtivefig · 13/08/2023 19:30

I loved it but almost gave up during the Christmas episode 😄 it took a lot of persuasion to try again but I’m so pleased I did!

Crinklycut · 13/08/2023 19:35

Who is Uncle Lee? Does anyone know?

viques · 13/08/2023 19:40

I kept wanting to tell Carmi to get in the shower and wash that greasy hair, he was so very grubby. 😁

Loved the Christmas Day episode, didn’t recognise JLC for ages but spotted Bob straight away. We used to have Christmasses a bit like that with someone refusing to let anyone help and getting more and more distraught ( they weren’t the one drinking though, that’s a different story!)

I am half way through S1 and enjoying it but miss a lot of the dialogue.
does anyone know how to turn on subtitles on Disney+? I can't seem to find that option anywhere.

tribpot · 15/08/2023 10:24

What device are you watching on, @ohotoframe ? On my phone if I press the centre of the screen to bring up the menu (to play, pause, rewind 10 seconds) there's an option in the top right hand corner that looks like a white rectangle with some small black lines near the bottom of it that are meant to represent text. If I tap that, I get options for the audio language and subtitles.

On my tv when watching Disney there is an anonymous little box on the right hand side of the screen under the line that shows how much more of the programme there is, when you highlight it and press it an option appears on the top of the screen for subtitles. It took me ages to work it out!

ohotoframe · 15/08/2023 19:33

@viques thank you so much. This has made a big difference. I would never have found it!

EddieHowesShithousingMags · 16/08/2023 19:37

I’ve just watched this, took me a while to get into it but I loved the Copenhagen and Forks episodes. I really really disliked the Christmas episode, it was just too much and gave me a headache and it was so long. I know it was to give you the background on Carmy and Sugar but you already knew their home life/upbringing was fucked up.

I was really cross with Carmy at the end of S2, such self sabotage. If I am honest there was bits of it I didn’t really ‘get’ but on the whole I enjoyed it.

superoz · 18/08/2023 01:06

Just watched the Christmas episode - man, that was stressful, could feel my blood pressure rising! But such an outstanding episode, and the performances from everyone was out of this world.

ohotoframe · 20/08/2023 23:01

Just finished it and am reflecting on it all and what the ending meant

Those of you who thought Camy self sabotaged - why do you think this? As I didn't see it that way. In fact I thought he was the only one who didn't step up when it was really needed - he crumbled.

Hope there is another series.

Willmafrockfit · 21/08/2023 07:26

but the rest of the team totally stepped up, under his previous guidance?

Crinklycut · 21/08/2023 12:07

I thought it was a bit harsh what happened to him. I don’t want to do spoilers. But I would not have walked out after what he said. Honestly, who is going to be their best self at those temperatures?

This is a story about grief, and a family of talented individuals who all lack the self-esteem to allow themselves to enjoy the fruits of their own labours. Carmy still slots into that.

The Claire story frustrates me. Possibly because I was a bit jealous of her! Also, because she was a bit implausible.

But I wonder if the story is better for having had two-dimensional Claire. Carmy dominated the first series, and he needed a distraction to showcase the complexity and development of the other characters. Claire distracted him, and then they quite literally locked him away.

Clever storytelling.

I am so desperate to see the next series. And to eat one of those sandwiches!

(And what is a chaos menu? And who was Uncle Lee?).

I’ve just watched the final episode and my reading of it was that it showed how successful Carmy had been as a leader in creating a really capable team.

He managed to build and create a successful team - mentoring Sydney, building up Tina’s self esteem, pushing Marcus to up his game etc. And he did this so well that they were able to run everything successfully even when he was stuck in the fridge.

I agree with the comment above that Claire’s character was pretty one dimensional. Hints of ‘manic pixie dream girl’ there as well - she seems there purely so we can see how Carmy relates to her.

I

Willmafrockfit · 22/08/2023 06:48

and Ritchie came through

Willmafrockfit · 22/08/2023 06:48

Ritchie I wear suits now

MotherOfCatBoy · 22/08/2023 20:34

All the Ritchie love here ❤️
Just want life to go right for that guy, he tries so hard

MotherOfCatBoy · 22/08/2023 20:36

My last episode takeaway is how much Carmy is still damaged and that despite lifting up others he still can’t lift up himself.

Also frustrated by Claire - we never really see her pov, she’s like a mirage. Maybe that was the point and Carmy needs to grow beyond her.

DontBeAPrickDarren · 22/08/2023 20:39

Is the Claire thing deliberate because Carmy isn’t emotionally invested in the relationship?

MotherOfCatBoy · 22/08/2023 21:12

I think he almost self sabotages it because he deep down thinks he doesn’t deserve her - think how many times he wouldn’t call her his girlfriend. He thinks he’s not good enough (because of mother and sadistic chef boss) and won’t let himself have the relationship.

PacificState · 23/08/2023 07:16

I wonder if the characterisation of Clare is deliberately thin - the writers have shown they can write complex, interesting women. Maybe we're seeing Clare as Carmy sees her (wonderful perfect forgiving manic pixie), because he finds it difficult to 'see' romantic partners properly/he can't cope with a real relationship because of his traumatic childhood? As pp said the story telling is very clever.

rowantree1997 · 31/08/2023 22:54

Just finished Season 2 and don't know what to do with myself now. Loved seeing how Ritchie developed.

Any recommendations for something to watch next pls!

GingerFoxInAT0phat · 31/08/2023 23:11

I also think Claire seems one dimensional as we are watching her though Carmys lense, perhaps series 3 will see her character develop.
