Channel 4 this week, documentary about Paula Yates.
She was the same age as me and I followed her career from the beginning. Had a bit of a girl crush on her and was genuinely sad when she died.

OP posts:

You could find that MH was keen to make the family unit with Paula that he'd been denied as a child (when he was separated from his brother Rhett)?

jibbe · 21/03/2023 11:13

I watched a you tube on MH last days and the cause of his death by a top UK pathologist, he was taking an absolute cocktail on top of all his drug use. He had burnt his fingers down to the bone in the days before his death from smoking an opium cigarette and falling into a stupor.
He was an absolute wreck

THisbackwithavengeance · 21/03/2023 13:05

@jibbe I hadn't known that. I remember being very sad about his death as he was a stunningly handsome, talented and very charismatic man. I saw INXS in concert, must've been 1990 or 1991, they were fantastic.

I don't remember being impressed with Paula Yates back in the day but she was a beautiful and charismatic women, I'll give her that.

Such a shame that a couple with fame, looks, talent, money and everything going for them ended up as raddled junkies.

I watched that this afternoon, yes he was a complete wreck. His fingers 😱🤢

ThePoshUns · 21/03/2023 21:46

I didn't know this about MH, how awful

Liorae · 21/03/2023 21:52

That certainly puts a different complexion on Bob's refusal to allow the kids to go to Australia.

Yep

Yes, in the time after Tiger Lily was born, Hutchence was described as driving like a maniac, under the influence of multiple drugs and narrowly avoiding fatal accidents. He was at no time a family man and spent his evenings off his head in nightclubs, womanising. Meanwhile, Paula was taking drugs to keep up with him so that he wouldn't lose interest in her. She also took rohypnol to cope with the extreme and painful sex he wanted to have.

I can completely see why Geldof wouldn't have wanted him looking after the girls.

Another thing that I have found quite illuminating is that Paula started to leave Tiger with Michael's mum in Australia because she was afraid that if she brought her back to the UK, she may be taken into care.

LillianGish · 22/03/2023 10:50

The most surprising fact I learned from this documentary was that MH's mum was just 12 when she gave birth to him. I actually had to rewind because I thought I had misheard.

No, she was 34!

I think that was his sister being interviewed, not his mum?

Ishouldbeoutside · 22/03/2023 13:04

I wonder how much Tiger Lily is aware of about her parents and the way they behaved? I wonder if she thinks of her father as some sort of hero , dead before his time?
He sounds like an absolutely arsehole and a very dangerous person to be in charge of any child. As does she.

No doubt she has internet access.

Omg so she would basically make herself completely out of it and unresponsive so he could shag her ? 😱

I was confused too and thought his mum was 12.

That’s really sad if it’s the case but shows how damaged Paula was with her childhood and insecurities and basically her TV presenting persona was a front for a quieter person.

Ishouldbeoutside · 22/03/2023 16:09

I mentioned earlier in the thread that she said he liked to choke her during sex and also that within the first five minutes of their first sexual encounter he did several things she thought were illegal. There’s ‘edgy’ and then there is just unpleasant .

Yes quite,he seems deeply unpleasant the more I read about him and quite frankly so does she.

This is basically for her to draw boundaries with him though and sounds like she was so desperate to keep him that she went along with that.

”Edgy” on his part yes, on her part too but I think based on her childhood (I don’t particularly like her but I don’t have strong feelings for her) she put up with a lot that other women wouldn’t have done.

It must be pretty embarrassing for her kids to know all this though, Peaches followed in her footsteps with her behaviour but at least her daughters seem sane. I’m lol’ing a bit at Pixie being called a high society beauty by Tatler though. I feel sorry for Fifi the most as she must’ve seen/heard a lot of things she shouldn’t have.

Ishouldbeoutside · 22/03/2023 16:28

Fifi has suffered from depression for much of her adult life. Not surprising .

Jesus Christ Sad

She seemed desperate to keep him. Whether that was because she genuinely 'loved' him, or because she enjoyed the status of being the girlfriend of sex god Michael Hutchence, who knows. Mind you, his sex god status was already on the slide when she got with him.

He, on the other hand, would have dumped her without a backward glance. He more or less already had.

Foggydog · 22/03/2023 19:20

@Ishouldbeoutside Paula Yates boasted that the first time she had sex with Michael Hutchence he did six things in the first hour she was firmly convinced were illegal, it was her trying to be funny/clever. She said a lot of things.

Ishouldbeoutside · 22/03/2023 19:24

Or it may have been true.
