Channel 4 this week, documentary about Paula Yates.
She was the same age as me and I followed her career from the beginning. Had a bit of a girl crush on her and was genuinely sad when she died.

OP posts:

I remember Stars on Sunday. Captain Sensible did a pisstake of it on the b side of one of his singles, called Our Souls to You

I didn’t connect that it was Finley Quayle she met in the Priory. My memory isn’t what it was.

QueefofSheena · 20/03/2023 11:27

She got absolutely pilloried in the press for wearing this dress to the Brits to give an award in 1994, the same year of the MH bed interview, while she was still with Bob. EJ is vile to her here:

Michael probably felt conflicted because he loved Tiger.
I very much doubt Michael gave a rats about Tiger, or indeed anyone besides Michael.

I'm sure he loved Tiger, but like quite a few fathers, he may eventually have found it entirely possible to love her while only spending time with her on maybe a few occasions a year.

No way was he going to play happy families with Paula, Tiger and 3 other girls under the age of 15. But in getting involved with Paula, that is the problem he created for himself.

Irrelevant but that dress is amazing and she looks stunning

Schmutter · 20/03/2023 12:03

She did look bloody amazing in that dress!

She did.

If it wasn't see through I think that she would have looked equally amazing though.

What did Elton John in that clip? I'm deaf and the subtitles are shit.

MyopicBunny · 20/03/2023 14:03

MH apparently doted on the three Geldof girls...and often was more attentive to them than their own father. I doubt that was the reason he wouldn't have stayed with Paula.

Evidence seems to suggest that both he and Paula were not in good places mentally when Tiger Lily was born.

OhMerde · 20/03/2023 14:14

Elton John showing his true colours there. Vile misogynist.

There's nothing new about your pussy or something

SapatSea · 20/03/2023 14:14

@RichardsGear Paula came down the stairs to Tom Jones singing "What's new pussycat" and EJ said Paula"there's nothing new about your pussy" - vile.

dayswithaY · 20/03/2023 14:20

Typical Elton John comment, and how tiny he looks next to Ru Paul!

I'm not sure that 'doting' on children is the same as the slog of full-time fatherhood, day in day out. Would he have been prepared to settle permanently in London to be with them, for example? Curtail his 'rock star lifestyle'?

We will never know, but I doubt it.

MyopicBunny · 20/03/2023 14:59

Yeah I don't think he would have been a stable partner for anyone.

sweetgingercat · 20/03/2023 15:16

@sweatervest Poor Belinda Brewin… It really was unbelievable, and that’s because The Sun got involved…

I doubt very much if Michael Hutchence paid more attention to the Geldof children than Bob did!

I imagine him being a 'fun uncle' type. He'd lark about with the kids in the brief periods he saw them. Indulge them, have a bit of a laugh. That sort of thing.

But 'attentive' as regards the 'boring' stuff like making sure they'd done their homework and brushed their teeth, picking them up from school, having clean socks ready for them every morning? Somehow I don't think so.

Ive just looked up the documentary on Michael Hutchence called Mystify. It seems it isn't on player or Netflix Anyone know where i can watch it?

I found it on YouTube

In the book mentioned on this thread, the author says that he did do all of those things. Apparently, he also bought their school uniforms and other things when there was a cash flow issue for Paula.

the whole of that programme is on youtube - i had a google. it's really awful and like a 24 hours in police custody type of thing.

Fifi1010 · 20/03/2023 19:46

There seems to be so much family dysfunction going back generations poor Paula , peaches and peaches children. I really hope her two boys have a healthy upbringing and manage to break the cycle. Thank god Fifi , Pixie and Tiger Lily seem settled after all that trauma..

RichardsGear · 21/03/2023 07:47

Thank you to those who filled me in on Elton's bitchy comment. She should've referenced the dead cat perched on his head.

Interesting.

Perhaps I have been judging him a bit too harshly!

Ishouldbeoutside · 21/03/2023 08:48

However he was unable to provide a safe environment for them with responsible parents . Keeping drugs under your bed in a smarties tube and shooting up when the children are asleep (presumably) isn’t a providing a happy or stable home. I’m sure Paula tried hard to present him in a good light so Bob wouldn't deny access.

As @Lalgarh says Belinda certainly wasn’t the squeaky clean character she’d have us believe, she was exonerated at court but I don’t believe her story for a moment. She just had good defence lawyers/barrister.
