I've got the same gripe with this show as with Bake Off. What level of professionalism are they supposed to/allowed to have? Ry is clearly in the top half in terms of performance and he's just finished an interior design degree (I'm sure I read), so is it fair to judge him against an enthusiastic amateur? But what if they've done a few weekend courses? Or are a 'professional furniture painter'?

They do film it over a weekend or equivalent. Recently two commercial premises near me were done on a Sunday and Monday when they would have been closed anyway. One has kept everything, one has ditched virtually everything.

They’re allowed to have up to 2 years professional experience - I had a look at the application form last year.

As the hotel was near Glasgow, I’d have liked to see some Charles Rennie Mackintosh in at least one design. I’m a big fan though. I liked Jack’s design the best. I think Joanne interpreted “maximalism” as “surrealism” or “anything goes”.

I feel as though we need an interior design version of the phrase “to read a room”. Charlotte listened to the brief, but ignored the info she was getting from the room itself. My north-facing room said “no” to some beautiful blue wallpaper (it looked grey and dreary in the dull light), so I had to change my plans. Such is life.

PuppyMonkey · 22/03/2023 18:16

I was waiting for Joanne to explain what lobsters had to do with the Scottish theme. But she never did.

JamMakingWannaBe · 22/03/2023 19:44

The gothic room was my favourite. I didn't like the white room and dusty grass waterfall.

Scottish seafood is world-renowned! She got a lot of things wrong, but I (Scottish) am fine with a lobster/Scotland link 😀

NeverApologiseNeverExplain · 22/03/2023 19:56

I was more offended by the guy who said that black and white checks were “sort of tartan”.

WeAreTheHeroes · 22/03/2023 20:00

I thought it was interesting that Matthew W disagreed quite a bit with Michelle, but her votes clearly carried more weight. I thought the white room was all wrong - far to Spartan. I think Charlotte should have stayed and the guy who did the white room should have gone. Yes she made a mistake with the orientation of the bed, but her ideas and the overall look were good.

Cocolapew · 22/03/2023 20:34

The canopy room was awful!

I liked watching Matthew's face and wondered how many times they had to edit him saying fuck me it's awful.

WeAreTheHeroes · 22/03/2023 21:28

The canopy room was more Scandi IKEA apartment with beach theme than luxury spa.

Matthew was very dismissive. He called it like it was. Gingham.

BigMandysBookClub · 22/03/2023 21:56

I hated the plum, lavender and blue colour scheme in Tom's room, but the material he chose on the wall kind of married it all together quite well. Then you turned around and saw that bloody hideous yellow sofa and curtains. Bonkers.

I'm not picking up many of the contestants understanding use of colour very well. Jack seems to choose colours that go really well, but not in a way you would imagine. I think it is because he uses slightly muted colours, rather than bright ones.

Tom was so arrogant tonight.

Matthew Williamson had 0 contribution tonight. He was just there, looking condescendingly at Michelle.

He looked like he had a hangover. Literally repeated everything Michelle said back to her until he inexplicably decided to stand up for the yellow sofa.

Michelle is such a pro. Cheerful enthusiasm pouring out despite having to converse with a wet blanket.

Cattenberg · 22/03/2023 23:29

Hopefully, this series is shaping up to be less predictable than the last.

Remember when Banjo seemed to be the front runner almost from the beginning? The suspense was not killing me.

SUBisYodrethwhenLarping · 23/03/2023 00:01

I am really enjoying this, I don't have any experience or expertise I just know what I like or don't like.

Thanks for the thread, which I have just found SmileSmileSmile

Netaporter · 23/03/2023 03:43

Tom needs to go, arrogant knob. No need to be quite so nasty about the other contestants work behind their backs. His room IMO was awful. Ditto Temi’s which looked like a room waiting for its dust covers to come off. Charlotte needed to go, so did Joanne. Feel like Monica has one style only.

Jack for the win here too. Final will be him versus ginger guy.

LolaSmiles · 23/03/2023 08:35

I thought his comments about other people's work were quite bitchy. He seems very sure of himself, but not in a quietly confident way.

longtompot · 23/03/2023 12:22

Tom was very rude, and cocky. I'm glad the others picked him up on it when he was one of the four left to face the sofa.
I quite liked the relaxed vibe of Temis room, but the canopy blocked the view. If her bed faced the window and had a shorter canopy hanging down at the foot end I think it might have worked. I think I have seen a bed draped in a similar way, but with the long bit of the fabric going down behind the head end of the bed.
Something like this screenshot, but more the length of the bed iyswim

When she said she was going to drape the bed with a voile this is what I had in mind. Not an old sheet!

Giggorata · 23/03/2023 17:12

I think that the young man with the headband, Jack, is making a strong showing and will likely win. This week's room was one I would have been delighted to stay in.
I thought that Joanne was the weakest candidate of the group and was faintly surprised she lasted so long.
Shame about Charlotte; she had some good ideas but the gaffe about the view and the bed facing a blank wall was too much.
I really liked the gothic room too, although I recognise that isn't to everyone's taste and continued gothic might wear thin with Michelle.

Tom was not nice this week, and his room wasn’t, either.

PriamFarrl · 23/03/2023 18:57

Which one is Tom again…?

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 23/03/2023 19:46

I thought Charlotte should have stayed and Mr White should have gone. Yes, Charlotte made some errors but she had more right than Mr White.

PriamFarrl · 23/03/2023 22:21

longtompot · 23/03/2023 21:59

Thank you. He seemed a bit bitchy.

Although I didn’t think Joanne was up to much as a designer I liked her, she seemed fairly ordinary. Everyone else just seems to need to out ‘personality’ each other.

LadyEloise1 · 23/03/2023 23:00

If I had booked a into that 5 star hotel which looked fabulous I would have asked for my money back been seriously disappointed with all the rooms.
I can't believe they allowed the white canopy room designer to stay.
It was dreadful.
Joanne's lampshades were ghastly.
So too was the totally out of place yellow sofa.
