She didn't miss it in the brief, she said she had zero experience of designing outdoor spaces having always lived in a big block of flats.

She did miss the brief if it specifically asked for "photo spots".

I missed the very beginning when the briefs were given.

I think the problem with Monika is that she has a style. And if you hired her as an interior designer then you would be hiring her because you liked her style. She’s being given briefs that don’t work for her. Now the argument is that she should be adaptable but I’d also argue that if you hired her it would be because you like what she does.

They had one of them either last series or the series before.

Wore lots of wigs, loud clothes, orange fake tan.

SheldontheWonderSchlong · 12/04/2023 13:23

@SoupDragon They didn't give any briefs at all at the beginning this week - they just said bride and groom....pretty vague!

SheldontheWonderSchlong · 12/04/2023 13:26

Apologies if I missed it though....!

JemimaTab · 12/04/2023 13:38

Anyway, Banjo’s new series starts tonight so I think I’ll give that a go. I think it will be less frustrating.

they must have had a better brief than that off cameras, surely? Probably one that used the word "cohesive"...

SoupDragon · 12/04/2023 14:25

As an aside, I have two "children" being assessed for ADHD at the moment. Neither of them can cope with a vague job like "tidy your room" and need it broken down into smaller jobs like "pick up the clothes".

This must be a nightmare for Monika (but she does need to learn how to manage it)

Clutterbugsmum · 12/04/2023 14:28

They did give brief's.

One was kitchen, dinning and lounge area and the other was bedroom and terrace area. Surely if Monika want's to be a designer she is capable of googling, read a book to get idea's for the areas she choose.

All she did was decorate in her style the bedroom, spent all the money on that and once again chucked the bare minimum decoration to the terrace.

emmylousings · 12/04/2023 15:29

It's interesting that I don't think on this thread, we predicted Monika and Tom for the final?! It's a bit daft that Michelle never refers to the practicality of fabrics and hanging dried flowers that would get dirty / dusty and look shit very quickly, but she always goes on about the client being so central to the design.

Tom has really grown on me, and I think he'll win!!

newnamethanks · 12/04/2023 16:41

Definitely agree about the dust collecting artefacts and drapes. Who would want that in a hotel room where the cleaner probably gets one hour max for the whole suite? Very impractical.

Mooserp · 12/04/2023 17:08

I can't believe that the lodges were actually going to be marketed at brides/grooms. For one thing, if they are getting ready in them they wouldn't want to be next door to each other.

I reckon they were just going to be stripped out and renovated anyway and the owners said they could come and play around in them

Bunny2021 · 12/04/2023 17:21

What frustrates me about a lot of these shows, but this one in particular, is that they are given such a short time frame to complete the work. In real life they would have time to complete the work up to a higher standard. I'd really like them to say, you have a week to complete this and see what they can achieve in a longer time frame. These 'makeovers' aren't just weekend jobs - it's a full redesign and fit-out.

PriamFarrl · 12/04/2023 17:52

I too dislike the two day time frame. It means that so much stuff is badly done. You can see how patchy the dark paint can be.

I didn’t get the oooing and aaaaing over the sofa that Tom made, it was just some plywood screwed together. It looked like it would scratch your legs or snag your tights.

I agree. Either the budget needs to be raised to enable them to buy more things, or the time needs to extend to allow them time to make and adapt things to a good standard.

PriamFarrl · 12/04/2023 18:35

They do seem to have a reasonable amount of help this time though. They aren’t sharing carpenters like they used to.

I agree, the hurried finishes let the designs down. They should be given time to stand back and reflect on their decisions. Temi’s sofa cushions were a real rookie error, given time they could have given a real zing to her design. I think she didn’t paint the beams because she was worried about the time. Such a shame.

Doingmybest12 · 12/04/2023 20:26

I warmed to Tom tonight, I thought he seemed quite sweet really and I liked his design. Monica's was a nice colour but really that dark colour scheme has been done to death and is very popular. I think she is deluded to think it is so original .I hated the duck and I'm not sure customers would want that. Not sure what they saw in the outside space at all. Tami s room was weak all round. I liked Jack's bedroom and terrace but the outdoor bench needed to be painted . The right decision tonight. I think Tom should win which is a surprise.

Maireas · 12/04/2023 20:45

I like Tom.
I remember staying in a B&B in the Lake District which had a lot of taxidermy. I had to throw a towel over some items in the bedroom ☹️

WhatsitWiggle · 12/04/2023 22:29

@Mooserp I think you've hit the nail on the head there. I think these are at Rutland Hall - the main hotel according to press had a big refurb last year. But their website has no interior pictures of the lodges.

WhatsitWiggle · 12/04/2023 22:34

I thought Monika would be going this week, her outside space was poor. But surprisingly her and Tom managed to join enough things together to make it look like they'd worked.

I was disappointed with Temi's room, the overall finish didn't gel. And Jack's wasn't his best work - that dressing area looked unfinished. I'd want massive mirrors to check my dress from all angles.

LassoOfTruth · 13/04/2023 08:48

I was underwhelmed by almost all the designs this week. A tricky brief especially in the short time frame. I really wish they’d at least have one or two challenges with a longer time - the rushing panic just makes for sloppy work and it’s a really contrived kind of drama. I want to root for the only girl left but Monika seems a bit out of her depth now. Jack to win I think with Tom the runner up!

PriamFarrl · 13/04/2023 08:51

I think it would have been better had it been one does the bedroom, one did the living room and the kitchen was a joint effort.

SoupDragon · 13/04/2023 09:38

The kitchen was impossible given the time and budget. There simply wasn't enough of either to do anything to it!

Maireas · 13/04/2023 09:53

Temi made the kitchen worse with the awful plywood covering. She got praise for that, which makes me think that I know nothing of design.

razzledazzle10 · 13/04/2023 10:31

Banjo from last series has a new show on iplayer 'Designing the Hebrides'. I watched the first episode and really liked it. He is so much better than the contestants from this year!
