She did the outside porch bit, it was the "pavement" in front she hadn't included so that might not have been apparent given it basically only involved putting furniture there (although Tom's very flimsy sun shade might have been a clue!)

SoupDragon · 06/04/2023 10:29

Having had to deal with adult DS who is undergoing assessment for ADHD, I can well imagine she is genuinely struggling with time management and detail!

@viques that's what I mean though! It was crazy to give most of the designers a brief which required them to make it usable as a beach hut, expecting them to keep their design within the context of the environment, and then give Monika 'gin palace' which basically could have been a small room or hut anywhere!

I understand the purpose of giving each of them a specific focus but this was just bizarre. It felt like they'd run out of sensible scenarios and just plucked these ideas out of the ether. It made it really hard to judge it fairly I thought.

I still think all 5 should have been on the couch having to defend their designs because they all had failings and no way was Temi significantly better to justify going through. I wonder whether they just felt it wouldn't be good viewing to let Jack straight through (as he has been most times) so they wanted to mix it up a bit by letting Temi through - it seemed clear that all of them, Temi included, were very surprised when her name was called.

yes, but a gin palace doesn't have to be dark and suffocating colours. It could have been a gorgeous aqua type colour or similar to reflect where they were, for the times they were using it as a beach hut, rather than a gin palace.

BUT the issue I have with this programme (and also Apprentice, Jewellery Masters etc etc etc) is that there are some weeks where the judges would annihilate you for doing the "obvious" thing by decorating a beach hut with whitewashed wood and driftwood and nets. Yet last night it was their favourite. The inconsistency of the judging means the contestants have no clue whether to do and obvious theme well or to take a risk and think outside the box.

I didn't much like any of the chalets this series, compared with the ones from the last one.
How could she take out the period sink, what about the ghastly incomplete tiling with gaps - how is that going to save splashes?
Stupid flimsy canopy that will obviously blow down in nanoseconds, vast bulky seats that get in the way, impractical cliche netting, massive intrusive wardrobe, shitty shelving, twiggy nonsense, etc.
And breathe.
Thank you for telling us about Banjo's programme, I will enjoy watching it.

There is a new series next Wednesday at 8 pm on BBC 2, Banjo - Designing the Hebrides. Banjo and his team transform a fish shop on the Isle of Mull.

I loved Banjo!

freyamay74 · 06/04/2023 11:28

I think it was the ripping out of the original sink and replacing with a crappy motor home one that did it for me! And the way Monika made such a big deal at the prospect of tiling and then didn't do any real tiling at all, just glued on that ugly gold strip of hexagons.

But yes, the inconsistent judging really is wearing thin now. Michelle raves about the table which Monika apparently moved to the outside area last minute, but that didn't really involve any serious design. She'd just bought a second hand table and put a decanter and glasses on top. Sure, it looked fine, but it was such an easy win compared to the briefs where they needed to build in lots of storage.

redspottedmug · 06/04/2023 13:44

I'm sure it was mentioned early on that Monica's brief included removal of the sink.

I was surprised it was allowed by the council though.

Loved Jack's ceiling but everything else was a bit pants.

freyamay74 · 06/04/2023 14:36

Jack invested too much in the ceiling and not enough time or thought in the rest of the chalet for sure. And once the guests had copped an eyeful of the ceiling and had the initial impact, they wouldn't be sitting staring at it all weekend.

Cocolapew · 06/04/2023 14:58

I thought the others were being cheeky using the outdoor space, surely that was the footpath!?
I hated Banjo so might have to give his show a miss.
I've also decided I don't like Michelle very much either.

There seems to have been a decision to make Michelle thoroughly unpleasant in this series, I think it is yet another programme where being pleasant isn't considered good there always has to be conflict and nastiness.

I agree also with pp that the judging is inconsistent. I think Jack is the most talented by a mile, and some of the others are/have been awful. The guy with the ponytail has become impossibly smug, but maybe that's editing too. I never believe in the timeline of these programmes. I think they change it up so that something said early is inserted later on and vice versa.

They did say early on that she was taking out the sink but the way it was said made me think that it was going to prove to be a problem with the owners.

I remember them specifically saying that Temi's client wanted the sink to remain, I don't remember them saying Monika's wanted it removed.

the bit in front of the chalets isn't actually footpath, it is private space. Because I am a sad fucker, I looked at them on Google Earth at the start of the programme.

I agree about Michelle this series. My husband walked in as I was catching up on it last night and he was saying that she was really inconsistent with feedback/criticism and was being unecessarily critical/mean.

I agree with a PP that interestingly a lot of the guest judges don't agree with Michelle's view.

Also - I realyl don't understand how Temi won. It looked so underwhelming.

Cattenberg · 06/04/2023 18:57

I’d love to be Michelle - she’s so elegant and has an amazing career. The show does seem to be all about her though. What the guest judges think doesn’t matter much and what the property owners think doesn’t matter at all.

Crumpetdisappointment · 06/04/2023 19:51

yes you would struggle to see into the chalets when you walk by
which is a shame

Madcats · 06/04/2023 20:01

I've just caught up. I am also puzzled by the judging from the last 2 episodes (teen and I watched them back to back).

I'm a bit disappointed that we can't walk past them (DH is overnighting with his parents about 8 miles away and we just messaged to ask why we've never gone to that bit of Eastbourne).

I wonder how much one of those beach huts costs? Presumably they are all back to being white now?

Crumpetdisappointment · 06/04/2023 20:06

you can walk past them but unless you stood on a bench you wouldnt be able to see in, i dont think

snowspider · 06/04/2023 22:54

I'm guessing the council was paid by fee for the time and the contract was to return to white base, plus refit the original sink (unless it was already too damaged? so didn't matter). Win win scenario and the production team made up the briefs. That was how it felt to me, so poor if that was the case if it wasn't then poor for making it feel that way.

@Twonewcats I agree, if Jack had done the same panelling around his chalet he would have been told it would have been nice to mix it up a bit, to 'define' the areas.

Can't say I've really warned to her. And it's been a few series now.

Maireas · 07/04/2023 15:05

I think it's very hard to be objective with interior design. With cakes or sewing or pottery there is a skill which can be objectively measured, at least to some extent. With this, it's just what some people think looks good or fashionable. I thought Monika's looked awful and can't understand why she didn't go.

To an extent, however the brief that was "florals" used huge foliage. And as LLB said, florals is chintzy, Laura Ashley idea - so they should have been slated for completely missing the brief

Maireas · 07/04/2023 15:25

Yes, I see what you mean by the brief, @Twonewcats . It's still tricky to judge completely objectively, though. Perhaps if there was more time for the judges to explain their rationale.

SoupDragon · 07/04/2023 17:12

I think that, when it gets down to just a few contestants, it becomes trickier to pick who should go. I think that this week they were all very much on a par but Peter missed the brief by a wider mark than the others. If it was just the seats being too wide or too high or the misinterpretation of "florals" it might have gone another way. I think he was the right one to go. I suspect Monika will be next as she's on borrowed time IMO.

The final could be any two of the other 3. I think I'd be happy with any of them winning.

Cattenberg · 07/04/2023 17:25

Do florals have to be chintzy. I have some art deco florals and some cushions in Orla Kiely fabric, but I’m not keen on chintz at all. I missed the start of the episode though, so I didn’t see the full briefs.
