i dont like the judges,
i never do in these programmes

freyamay74 · 05/04/2023 10:43

A feature of this competition (in contrast to some other tv shows) is that there is more of a focus on detailed discussion and feedback from the judges; I mean the contestants on the couch have the Q and A opportunity which you don't see in other shows. But what let's it down is the lack of consistency- I completely agree about them criticising something with one contestant which they then ignore with another, such as the seating not facing the sea.

In this particular episode I felt all 5 should be on the couch and having to defend their work. Temi got through just on the 'cohesive' aspect but a lot of it such as the mirrors and net on the ceiling was pretty crap. Her overall design didn't make the impact of some of the others and was pretty lacklustre. I think if all 5 had been on the couch and the questioning had been a bit more probing, then it would have been fairer. It does feel a bit like a done deal, that the judges have been looking ahead to the final pretty much from the start and are making decisions based on who they want to see in the final.

PriamFarrl · 05/04/2023 10:54

They must have seen something in Temi’s that I didn’t. It was ok but it looked like something a friend would do, not a designer.

I wonder if they record the chat that Alan and Michelle have saying what they didn’t want to see after they have completed the designs.

Netaporter · 05/04/2023 11:43

I didn’t really like any of them this week, unlike in previous series when it was usually a great task. Agree Temi got away with murder. It looked like she’d shopped at the Eastbourne branch of the BHF via a visit to a woodland along the way. Glad Tom got his arse smacked, he’s like the mean girl at school the teachers favour because they have no idea of their true personality. He really should have gone for not considering ceiling storage and simply cutting back the wardrobe. Loved Jack’s ceiling but the rest let him down, agree about the shelf brackets. Peter was fucked after his own decorator asked him if he’d ever been to the Caribbean 😂As for gothic Barbie, I agree the time mismanagement is getting boring, and there is no excuse for not reading the brief properly. She should’ve gone for ditching the original sink alone. However, she did have the most difficult brief IMO.

Annoyingly, I think Tom will be in the final but will be beaten by Jack. 🤞

Mooserp · 05/04/2023 11:48

I thought Jack's ceiling was easily the best feature and probably Temi's was the worst overall design. The ceiling netting - how were children going to access that? And I was imagining how much sand would be flying around as things were flung up there.

Maireas · 05/04/2023 12:05

Temi's was awful. Jack's was the best, it was totally in keeping with the chalet, and that wonderful saturated pastel green.
Monika's was dreadful, and as pp have said, ripping out the original sink was vandalism. Her design just had nothing to do with the seaside. Plus, she moaned all the way through, which gets on my nerves.

Crumpetdisappointment · 05/04/2023 12:14

did Jack did the NHS?
too blue really

Why didn’t they mention those grim twigs Temi had stapled everywhere, were they supposed to be driftwood, not to mention the table tennis bats with names on. Her table on wheels was a good idea, but the table top was tiny , you would have been hard pressed to get a mumsnet massive salad and good crusty bread on there. Monica should have been sent home in disgrace for vandalism, that sink was an original feature, which she should have incorporated into her design. I bet the owners wept when they realised what she had done.

I don’t think any of them have viable careers in design .

SoupDragon · 05/04/2023 12:25

They criticise one contestant for something, then ignore the same ‘fault’ in another design. Peter’s seating didn't face the sea, well neither did the others.

I imagine there is far more feedback given than we see so I bet they did comment on other people's seating too. Peter's seating was a disaster on all fronts though.

I bet there is more than the 5 minutes on the sofa that is shown on TV.

freyamay74 · 05/04/2023 13:58

There will definitely be much more footage shot but it's poor editing when the final cut makes the judging appear very inconsistent

Crumpetdisappointment · 05/04/2023 14:03

i know, llb sat on someone else's sideways sofa and announced he could see the sea!
prick

PriamFarrl · 05/04/2023 14:23

I was surprised she was allowed to take the sink out. I would have expected that to be listed.

was that the one with the small round table? If so, it was an L shaped one so part of it did face the sea.

I was surprised they were allowed to paint the outsides as all the other huts are white.

jay55 · 05/04/2023 15:42

I thought Temi won because she included the changing area. The rest of them seemed to forget what people do at the beach unless it was specifically spelt out in the brief.

The design features were piss poor compared to previous years where they got really creative with hooks and storage and other useful features.

But that ceiling was insane and will make that one sooooo popular for day hire with Instagrammers.

freyamay74 · 05/04/2023 16:34

@jay55 that was what was crazy about the briefs though.... I mean the gin palace one could have been anywhere! No reason for it to be a beach chalet whatsoever; it may as well have been a hut anywhere! No nod to the sea at all, and although the judges mentioned that, they clearly didn't have any expectation that she needed to acknowledge it was a beach hut to get through.

Mooserp · 05/04/2023 17:57

I don't think the gin one needed a changing area

Ididn’t like Monica’s design , but she did what was asked, and why should you have to reflect the sea just because it is a beach hut where you can sit and actually see the sea if you want to see sand and seagulls. I live in London, I know I live in London so I don’t have Union Jack cushions and a House of Commons mural on my sitting room wall.

GingerRuby · 05/04/2023 22:25

There is a new series next Wednesday at 8 pm on BBC 2, Banjo - Designing the Hebrides. Banjo and his team transform a fish shop on the Isle of Mull.

freyamay74 · 05/04/2023 22:52

@viques that's what I mean though! It was crazy to give most of the designers a brief which required them to make it usable as a beach hut, expecting them to keep their design within the context of the environment, and then give Monika 'gin palace' which basically could have been a small room or hut anywhere!

I understand the purpose of giving each of them a specific focus but this was just bizarre. It felt like they'd run out of sensible scenarios and just plucked these ideas out of the ether. It made it really hard to judge it fairly I thought.

I still think all 5 should have been on the couch having to defend their designs because they all had failings and no way was Temi significantly better to justify going through. I wonder whether they just felt it wouldn't be good viewing to let Jack straight through (as he has been most times) so they wanted to mix it up a bit by letting Temi through - it seemed clear that all of them, Temi included, were very surprised when her name was called.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 06/04/2023 00:22

Monica not finishing the bottom of the tiles on the back wall when she clearly knew they needed doing because she'd done the bottom of the side wall really annoyed me.

None of them are great this year.
Still think Jack has most potential.

The best thing in the show for me was Michelle's raspberry pink, linen dress.
I want it!

SoupDragon · 06/04/2023 07:47

There is certainly the feeling that the one who leaves is simply the one who messed up the least this week rather than the ones who stay being the best.

I think Jack and Tom seem to be the most reliable (although given this week I wonder if that's all in the editing!).

Halsall · 06/04/2023 08:02

Also, we didn’t get to see the mysterious owners of these chalets. I’m sure they used to appear and give their verdicts, however briefly, in the old series (the one with Sophie Robinson). It makes me wonder whether they even exist, with their demands for ‘gin palaces’ and ‘Caribbean-themed’ colour schemes.

This made me laugh. Tell that to 9 out of 10 metropolitan Airbnb owners 😂

Call my cynical but I think Monika’s outdoor problem was either fabricated or trumped up. She had furniture that fitted perfectly and it looked great. Not a total last minute rush job and while she seemed nervous she wasn’t tearful like we saw last week. I reckon it was thrown in for drama or she actually realised early doors and they moved it in the edit to ramp up the drama.

LLB was right about that cupboard though. Ugly as sin and no attempt to zhoush it up. Stencil a design on or spray it gold at least.

freyamay74 · 06/04/2023 09:57

Monika is definitely playing up the ditzy, neuro divergent 'oops I didn't realise' card and it's tedious. The chalets were all in a row; she'd have seen the others working on the outside areas so even if she didn't listen to the brief (!) she'd have known well before the second day.
