Did LLB have sweaty hair, all I could think of was how hot must be in that black suit.

I was sad for Monica's original sink which looked like it would be perfect for art deco theme to sit on her sideboard instead of the ugly caravan sink. The tiles were ok but so poorly put up it looked awful. It fitted gin bar theme so glad LLB stuck up for the colours and she did well to get away with forgetting the outside, if Peter hadn't messed up with the chairs I think she may have been next. Wasn't sad to see Tom get criticized.

I liked Temi's hut more than some of the others although the net on ceiling looked rubbish and hated the cheap spraypainted mirrors in the changing area. I liked Jack's although I think the judges were right on the sink cladding being too much and the little wall shelves looked cheap, he could've done a more subtle colour homage to NHS as the ceiling was great.

WeAreTheHeroes · 05/04/2023 07:15

What I find really interesting is that the guest judges very often don't seem to share Michelle's views.

Crumpetdisappointment · 05/04/2023 07:25

i agree that there was too much blue for the nhs workers, although the ceiling was excellent.

freyamay74 · 05/04/2023 07:26

Monica has scraped through over the last few weeks. She proved herself crap at budgeting and crap at timing, and this episode proved herself crap at taking on board the brief. I know she's told us she has ADHD but that's not an excuse for just not being very competent at the job she's aiming to do. No matter what you're design skills are, if you want to make a living out of it, you need to listen to the brief and work within budgets and time scales.

I do think it's tricky when the briefs are so wildly different .... the idea of a gin chalet gave a lot of scope to go full on with colour and retro styling whereas I do think Tom got a bit of a raw deal as his brief was basically having to store huge amounts of water sport equipment. Having said that, his wardrobe was ridiculous!

Temi achieved the cohesive look that Monica wanted but personally i was underwhelmed and that met with a few buckets and spades on the ceiling looked straight out of a bargain basement shop

freyamay74 · 05/04/2023 07:27

That should be the cohesive look Michele was after

SoupDragon · 05/04/2023 07:58

Temi's mirrors were utterly shit! I think you're meant to sand or use paint stripper on the back and spray from the back too. If they were glass and not plastic (I'm not sure they were glass).

Doingmybest12 · 05/04/2023 08:03

Wasn't the wardrobe already in there and maybe they wanted to keep it , but he could've incorporated it a bit better. They were all pretty poor. The diver ceiling was very pretty, shame he didn't pull off the the rest of the chalet. Not sure LLB was a good judge for this challenge. Tom is very irritating!

freyamay74 · 05/04/2023 08:09

@SoupDragon I agree, Temi's mirror things looked like cheap shit.

I was also a bit Hmm at Monica making such a big deal of the 'tiling' and putting it off as long as possible... and then spreading a bit of adhesive over a tile strip of cheap looking gold hexagons and slapping it over the sink. Does she think that's tiling?!

It's a shame Ry went out; overall I feel he was the most authentic actual designer.

freyamay74 · 05/04/2023 08:10

@Doingmybest12 if Tom's brief included that he had to keep the wardrobe, surely this shouldn't have gone against him in the judging?

Halsall · 05/04/2023 08:19

I was very unimpressed with Temi's chalet. Scrappy and ill-executed are the words that spring to mind. Especially those laughably bad mirrors.

Monika is falling apart over time-management and not reading the brief properly (how could she have not noticed that everyone else was doing something to the outside?) but to me her interior looked the most impressive. And the clients specifically asked for a 'gin palace'. I’m not sure you could successfully combine that concept with a beach theme, whatever Michelle seemed to think.

SoupDragon · 05/04/2023 08:38

I think Monika was lucky not to realise she had to do the pavement bit in front of the porch. I think she'd have fallen into the trap of "too much stuff to pack away" if she had.

Quite, but I guess he could've incorporated it more into the design or disguised it. I might be mistaken about it being there originally. Thought he was brave doing a mural when this is what LLB does so well and often.

I agree that the mirrors and net were really bad but I thought the rest was good.

The shelves in Jack's were utterly dreadful - I could have done better. Those shit white metal supports, the mean size of the shelves and the poorly executed art deco "thing" on the top. He can do far better!

Peter did the mural didn't he?

Doingmybest12 · 05/04/2023 08:45

Now I'm confused the cupboard was in the mural one wasnt it ? Not good with names .

LadyEloise1 · 05/04/2023 08:56

@SoupDragon
Funny I too noticed the sh*t white metal supports and thought they looked odd. Smile

I thought Michelle was too harsh on Monika's Gin Palace and the lack of a seaside theme.
It was what the clients had asked for after all.

Crumpetdisappointment · 05/04/2023 08:57

the gin theme might have been better if it was blue

SoupDragon · 05/04/2023 09:04

Doingmybest12 · 05/04/2023 08:45

The wardrobe was in the "Caribbean shack" which had wood strips like a shed on the wall.

the mural was with the seats that were too high and stuck out past the door.

I think 🤔

SoupDragon · 05/04/2023 09:08

@LadyEloise1 I have those shelf supports on my garage where no one sees them. No way do they fit the art deco theme he was going for. I think he spent too much time on painting the swimmers and then had to rush everything else.

freyamay74 · 05/04/2023 09:14

No way could Monika not have realised the outside needed to be done as well, even though she didn't bother listening to the brief properly. She would have seen the others working on the outside area. It's annoying, I think she plays on the neuro divergency to try to 'explain' how she can't manage the timing, budget etc. The ultimate aim is to be a professional interior designer and if she can't listen or work within parameters then she'll be hopeful.

That said, I like the colours of her chalet and the furniture and art deco look. But I think the 'gin palace' brief was a gift compared to eg: Tom's which was basically just having to create masses of storage for loads of equipment. I understand why they want to give each design its own twist, but imo when the briefs are so diverse, it's hard to make it equitable. Monika had no expectation to include a beach connection, and her last minute outside area was literally just a retro style table with a decanter and glasses she'd bought, set up on the terrace. Looked great I agree, but an easy win compared to the others' briefs.

lollipoprainbow · 05/04/2023 09:18

Tom didn't mind being criticised did he?! Looked like a sullen teenager.

SoupDragon · 05/04/2023 09:20

I think most of them look like that when criticised 😂

freyamay74 · 05/04/2023 09:24

Hopeless! I meant hopeless. (Though I do think Monika is being hopeful too! Grin)

Cattenberg · 05/04/2023 09:29

To be fair to Monika (and the others), I don’t think professional interior designers are expected to work to such short timescales, put up shelves or do the tiling themselves!

I liked Peter’s mural, so I think it’s a shame he went.

Beebumble2 · 05/04/2023 10:12

They criticise one contestant for something, then ignore the same ‘fault’ in another design. Peter’s seating didn't face the sea, well neither did the others.
Monica could have used larger mirrors reflecting the view and put the small mirror on her kitchen cupboard storage, which was out of place and hardly mentioned.
Tom’s wardrobe could have been up cycled to reflect the sea sports, taking the door panels out and replacing with fishing net. Perhaps it needed to be further back rather than in the room.
Some odd comments by the judges, but they’re working to a formula of keeping some ‘characters’ in till the end.
