Because she's blonde, slim and attractive?? I can't help feeling if it was an ordinary harassed looking school run mum that had gone missing there wouldn't be this much media interest.

Also lots of men go missing and don't get any media attention at all.

MrsSkylerWhite · 11/02/2023 11:19

Isnt it a bit soon for this? Friends/family and police have been asking gawpers and armchair detectives to stay away. Surely this only encourages such behaviour.

lollipoprainbow · 11/02/2023 11:20

When I say harrassed looking school mum I mean me !

If they didn't want people to talk about it, I don't think he'd have gone on a channel 5 documentary at prime time...

Mumsnet posters come in various shapes, sizes and ethnicities but I bet the typical poster is quite similar to Nicola with the same age, build and highlights, fitbit, apps and a partner similar to Paul in various ways.
It strikes a chord, it gets the attention, it gets attention but not at the expense of the other cases?

Luckingfovely · 11/02/2023 11:23

@ofwarren I absolutely understand what you're saying, and agree with your principle.

I was on all of the threads and wanted to be able to have sane and reasonable discussions on the subject. But that last thread had really turned into something hideous that was making even me extremely uncomfortable. Does that make it right that it was deleted? I'm not sure.

xJoy · 11/02/2023 11:24

So people who watched the programme, was there a single new question posed, or any new information? I am not even in England but I see this case on fb, on mumsnet, skynews, my youtube feed. If I were local I cannot imagine not having asked myself where I was between 0910 and 0930 on 27 Jan by now.

I'm totally fine with night watch hiding it till morning. I just feel the derailing, conspiracy posters should be the ones deleted, not the thread itself.
What precedence does that set? Just derail any thread you don't like so that mumnet remove it?

I think it must be incredibly painful for families if other cases though. To see the value placed on Nicola (or MM) against the value placed on their loved one by police and the public.

We live a few miles away. It’s been the lead on local TV and radio news. Constant appeals from family/friends and police to keep away 🤷‍♀️

I also live nearby
They have appealed for people to stay away from St Michael's, not to stop talking about the case full stop. Do you really think Paul went on tv if he wanted people to not talk about the case?

MrsSkylerWhite · 11/02/2023 11:32

Ok, I’m assuming by your use of “Paul” that you know the family so I won’t comment further.

Batcountry8 · 11/02/2023 11:34

Yeah of warrens post's were re posting facts, replying to many posters with balance.
Maybe she is connected to friends of family or whatever, Not that I got that impression.
She has connections to the area but she's done a great job being considered and consistent in keeping up awareness.

I hope they reinstate thread 7.

I don't think I'll stick around MN if we're not allowed to read about a major news story, ABOUT A MUM.

I don't know them personally no. I just don't automatically use initials like lots of people do on here and using 'Nicola's partner' would have been strange. Everyone knows his name after last night.

Luckingfovely · 11/02/2023 11:36

@ofwarren in a perfect world absolutely, we'd be able to get rid of the idiots doing the derailing and carry on with adult, insightful discussion. (*perspective noted).

There's something about this case though that was having particularly nasty outcomes - one being ridiculous accusations against individuals close to NB; one being off-topic arguments about unrelated but highly emotive subjects; another being the level of vitriol from posters against each other for not agreeing or questioning their thinking.

None of those things are your fault, and none of them should mean that threads should be pulled automatically.

My thinking is just that the thread had really taken a nasty turn and was coming off the rails in as much as there was far more problematic and potentially damaging content than useful or even sane commentary.

I guess there is a line where a thread can be doing more harm than good, and my feeling is that that happened here.

Maybe that still doesn't make it right to delete it - but I understand why it would be deemed so, and broadly agree in this specific instance.

Hobnobswantshernameback · 11/02/2023 11:37

I swear some posters on here would have been knitting at the guillotine and would have critiqued the facial expressions of those being executed
FFS

QueefQueen80s · 11/02/2023 11:37

I think it's a good idea, the more publicity the better.

Sorry if this has been mentioned but the partner mentioned that if Nicola takes the kids to school and walks dog then HE loads them all in the car, and she does it if he is the one going out. But the ring cam shows her loading the car.

OneFrenchEgg · 11/02/2023 11:37

The threads are a bit pointless, just endless recycling of information but it's a way for people to connect just like any other subject. There's also a lot of ND people on here and online connections are incredibly important to us. Not that I'm invested particularly in the NB threads, I've dipped in and out, but I can see why threads continue - like the TV threads, or anything.

I think you were being dramatic, but that is firmly routed in historical fact, certainly happened, and this is certainly the continuation of that human tradition Grin

That’s how it felt when I read about the programme. Can’t help feeling it just encourages gossip and speculation.

The ring cam shows her AT the boot.

drivinmecrazy · 11/02/2023 11:39

I've just finished watching the programme and what strikes me most is when her partner says, quite early on, that he won't settle for anything less than knowing what happened on that day.
I'm obviously paraphrasing, but it then struck me that it's such a good thing that this case does have such a high profile.
The family are going through what so many families endure every year. We're not only getting an insight to this case but also a deeper understanding and sympathy for l the other cases.

How many times do we see 'missing' appeals on SM yet just scroll on by?

I know that this case will make me take a little more notice in all of the other missing persons cases. They are all deserving of our sympathy and I do feel as if his interview worked so well to shine a light on what families generally might go through.

I'd like to think, whatever the outcome, that it might have changed our perspectives or empathy for others in similar situations 😞

QueefQueen80s · 11/02/2023 11:43

@ofwarren Ah okay thanks, so she was maybe putting something else in there.

I read a week ago that she kept her gilet in the boot, that she put over her coat

I think he was trying to make the point that on that morning, she was organised and had more time so she did it all. But the interviewer sort of interrupted him explaining and then the questions moved on. That was my take on it anyway.
