Couldn't see a thread on this....

Nicola Bulley Ch 5 9pm tonight
OP posts:
Luckingfovely · 11/02/2023 10:22

The most recent one #7 was deleted overnight by MN.

I had been following all the NB threads and have to say I think it was the right call. The thread had descended into ridiculous accusations and pathetic arguments and was only doing more harm than good.

I would defend passionately our right to discuss any topic on this platform usually. But this case has really bought the worst out in people. Or possible just the worst people out?

So we can't discuss it due to the behaviour of a few posters?
The vast majority of us on those posts were respectful and not accusing anyone. A few of us live in or near the village.
Totally unfair to pull threads due to the behaviour of a few.

Have you asked mumsnet?

Yes
I put a post in site stuff this morning and am waiting for a response

ilovebrie8 · 11/02/2023 10:31

The current thread is being reviewed, rest are still there. Most posters were reasonable as @ofwarren said. Hopefully it will be reinstated.

Hopefully they’ll reinstate it if they delete the problem posters. I haven’t read them but if there were 6 that were allowed to stand as presumably not speculating, I’m sure most posters can continue to discuss respectfully.

bellswithwhistles · 11/02/2023 10:35

That was a very bizarre one hour viewing. I have my own thoughts. I hope I'm not right!

Can't help but feel that there's something more to this than meets the eye. Those poor children.

MySugarBabyLove · 11/02/2023 10:36

I think when you get to the point of numbering your threads and starting the OP with an FAQ it has gone way beyond discussion and into obsession/entertainment.

I posted on the last one purely because I thought and still do think that the documentary was awful, ill-advised and should never have been made, but it’s disingenuous to suggest that it was civilised discussion, posters were posting maps, pictures, lots of “I wonder if she….” Speculations which echoed from thread to thread.

Meanwhile over 20000 people have died in Turkey and its barely been mentioned.

theleavesfall · 11/02/2023 10:36

@bellswithwhistles like what?

I agree with this. There were many relevant important and compassionate experiences relayed by posters which were of value to others and a couple of rogue speculative derailers whose posts should have been deleted.

I disagree. I think the FAQs were important as the facts / witness info has changed daily and caused confusion and unnecessary suspicion.

I am not sure about PA motives for the C5 doc - I expect he was encouraged by Peter F being on it - but he looks like a desperate broken man who would do anything.

I wonder if the police were informed or asked for their guidance on doing this - whether it would help or hinder the investigation or put PA at risk?

MySugarBabyLove · 11/02/2023 10:51

It wasn’t just a few though.

I have just skimmed back over the previous four threads started by that OP, and 399 posts out of the 4000 were her’s. That’s about 10% of all the posts on this topic. I’m presuming she knows NB because if not this level of obsession really isn’t healthy.

And the truth is there’s nothing to discuss. She disappeared, presumed in the river, police keeping an open mind, everything else is just conjecture. But it’s become a circus.

Beautiful3 · 11/02/2023 10:56

What about all the other missing people in the UK? Thousands are missing, but police seem to only highlight this single case? So strange.

You've counted the OP posts out of 4000 posts?
And SHE'S the one obsessed? OK then.
She said a number of times she lives in the area, so it's impacting her life day to day.

NightsThatStartWithWhiskey · 11/02/2023 10:58

I disagree. I think the FAQs were important as the facts / witness info has changed daily and caused confusion and unnecessary suspicion.

For what reason though? People on the threads presumably had nothing to offer the police in terms of information or had already given it. I agree that from the description of there being maps, speculation and pictures being posted and hundreds of posts from one poster, it seems like gossip and entertainment.

We live very close to where there was a tragic event a few years ago. Just because we lived close didn’t make me feel I should post obsessively online or that it gave me any rights over the incident. I think it’s weird people feel like that.

At the vast majority of those posts are news reports. It's the NEWS board after all.

Plitvice · 11/02/2023 11:03

The Channel 5 documentary was well but together. The guests did not add anything useful apart from having a few digs at the police. I am how surprised PF was generally silent.
PA came across well. Like many engineers, verbal communication is not his strongpoint but he did his best and his devotion to his kids was clearly conveyed.

Plitvice · 11/02/2023 11:04

surprised how

Because she's blonde, slim and attractive?? I can't help feeling if it was an ordinary harassed looking school run mum that had gone missing there wouldn't be this much media interest.

I remember getting similar criticism at the start of covid for collating news reports on the situation. I had long running posts then where people would come to my threads to see what was happening, rather than searching for news articles.
I'm autistic and like to see things chronologically. I am good at sifting through junk news and finding out information.

My brain likes patterns and hates uncertainty and not having answers.

This on top of living nearby makes me interested in the case. I'm not getting 'entertainment' from it, far from it. I want to know where she is, like the vast majority of the country.

User45378754 · 11/02/2023 11:07

I thought it provided a good anchor to cut through the huge media explosion and stick to the facts (as they evolved) which even if it didn’t help the case directly would have increased others knowledge of the risks of open water and social media sharing.

There were also posters who had experienced similar and they had an opportunity to share their loss.

I also think that these relatable and tragic cases cause huge anxiety for women and if there is an opportunity to talk this through responsibly, respectfully and compassionately then that’s of value.

Yes, I agree.

On the last thread, there was a poster who came on who was deliberately trying to trigger people and she was allowed to carry on doing that which is a shame.

itsnote · 11/02/2023 11:12

It's not fair to stick the boot in to @ofwarren. She is right when she says many of her posts were links to news articles.

Plus, she lives close by, as do I, and it is on everyone's minds all of the time. Every few hours as the tides change you think, "will she be with this one"? Has someone taken her? What happened? Where is she?

The thread got deleted, it had become horrible during the day when a poster was posting some really upsetting and untrue things. It started again last night and I am personally guilty of not keeping my mouth shut when I was feeling attacked and offended by that particular poster.

Was it that same topic again in the night?
That awful, awful poster. So upsetting for many.

It is not just a feeling, it is an established fact that even the Police are aware of. You can only address it by publicizing the cases of others first hand.
It won't resolve it but it will level the playing field very slightly.
