NEW 5 part drama to be shown weekly on a Monday

a corrupt cop now realises she must betray her drug baron boss

19 years ago, when Lou was a young police officer at her lowest ebb and Col a low-ranking but ambitious newcomer to the Leeds underworld, their paths crossed, and they struck a deal that changed their lives forever.

The bargain allowed Col to become very rich and very powerful, and Lou to turn around her failing career.

A complex but special bond between the pair was forged, and so began Lou’s gradual slide into corruption. But now, when Lou’s family is brought to the brink of a tragedy, she must put right the wrongs that she has spent years rationalising and excusing, to have a second chance at a new, better life.

Set and shot entirely in Leeds and West Yorkshire, Better explores the complex and powerful bonds of loyalty and family, set in a world where everyone has their own version of “right” and “wrong”. Examining the power of human conscience, we follow DI Lou Slack’s (Leila Farzad) epic battle towards redemption, by bringing down Col McHugh (Andrew Buchan); the man she has come to love like a brother and the man she has helped place at the head of Leeds criminal underworld. But while Col is a dangerous enemy to make, Lou’s biggest battle may yet be with herself.

I'm just starting episode 3 and quite enjoying it - there was a bit more detail at the end of ep 2 about how she got into the arrangement with Col and how her husband is involved. She's clearly the dominant one in the relationship so he's gone along with her. Agree about the unrealistic attendance at his birthday party, and for a copper whose dad was also a copper she's amazingly naïve about what a drug lord might do to protect his empire Hmm

Mightily unimpressed with the whole affair thing, ugh. I am coveting Lou's wardrobe though, the camel coat is gorgeous and I like the navy/khaki/white colours she wears.

AB played Matt Hancock in This England (drama about BJ and the pandemic) recentlyGrin He was perfect in the role!

Just starting but as I'm doing unforgotten I will watch Tom probably

Yes I forgotten definitely wins!

butterpuffed · 07/03/2023 09:49

Watched this last night, Unforgotten later today if I have time .

Lou really doesn't have any loyalty to anyone and her actions put everyone in danger .

I found it was a bit obvious Col would catch on when she drove to his place and told him to get everything out of the house .

Can't imagine how it'll all finish , especially after what Vernon did to Col's right hand man Bulgey at the end !

VirginiaQ · 07/03/2023 14:19

I have watched to the end (promise no spoilers) and it is just so bad!

How she has got to DI without being rumbled is beyond me. Her constant disappearances would have been noticed long before now. Plus all those meetings and lunches with Coll she'd have been spotted at some point.

The fact she thought a quick call to a neighbouring division anonymously would be enough to get a car pulled for drugs is unbelievable. That's the sort of thing the general public may think but not a cop with 20 years in.

Yes telling the work colleague was also unbelievable and the fact she seemed to think if she confessed all to her bosses the worst that would happen is getting the sack!! I have actually wondered if they actually had Police advisors on this as it's clearly written by someone who doesn't know what they're talking about Police wise.

martinisforeveryone · 07/03/2023 14:43

The creators, writers, directors worked together previously on Humans and a Spooks spin off in 2015, neither of which I watched.

I chose to watch Unforgotten when this was on. Not sure when I'll catch up, or even if I'll bother. It'll have to be when I'm at a really loose end.

Rhondaa · 07/03/2023 14:47

So disappointing, it had potential i was vaguely interested at the very start, but last night the ridiculous scene with Owen miraculously able to walk through a wood then trying to kiss James or whatever his real name is.

Col and Lou screaming at each other in the scene where she was about to be shot. Vernon setting his house on fire, I mean I presume it was to make sure no clues to her were found but a bit extreme nonetheless.

Then the cringeworthy slo mo end scene where Lou gawped from husband to son and back again. She's the world's worst actress, I know we can't have Sarah Lancashire in everything but I think a wet Our Clare could have done a better job.

I'll have to watch ep 5 just to see if weasly Col gets sent down. Hopefully Lou comes a cropper.

I mean seriously what we're the makers thinking with this twallop.

Blondeshavemorefun · 08/03/2023 21:02

Can't believe anyone has enjoyed this.

Wooden acting, ridiculous plot, full of holes. All of the characters are unlikeable.

Absolute rubbish.

beguilingeyes · 08/03/2023 22:17

It is awful. The contrast between this and Unforgotten is painful.

@Blondes can you add me to list please?
Thanks

Does seem a little weird that all the meets she has done no one has ever seen her

Think Jamie/cols son felt bad over her son

A long walk via the woods to sit at a lake and go swimming names

So cols bodyguard is no more

Not sure he torched his house apart from the cover fingerprints /evidence

And now he will go back to prison and her fault

Who will look after his cat

But he drank a bootle of good wine

Bit late to this thread. I've enjoyed it, totally unbelievable but still. I'll wait for comments about the ending until it's shown.

Blondeshavemorefun · 12/03/2023 19:38

Not sure his will end

Will she resign

Will col suddenly turn good

Will she go to prison

Will he

ilovebrie8 · 14/03/2023 11:39

That was an anti climax....v poor ending!

Emotionalsupportviper · 14/03/2023 14:49

Well - that's 5 hours of my life I won't get back.

And I was worried about the cat, too, because even if she'd offered it a home, Kiwi would have et it, or at least bounced all over it. Very relieved that @Marmite is able to take it in, poor thing.
