NEW 5 part drama to be shown weekly on a Monday

a corrupt cop now realises she must betray her drug baron boss

19 years ago, when Lou was a young police officer at her lowest ebb and Col a low-ranking but ambitious newcomer to the Leeds underworld, their paths crossed, and they struck a deal that changed their lives forever.

The bargain allowed Col to become very rich and very powerful, and Lou to turn around her failing career.

A complex but special bond between the pair was forged, and so began Lou’s gradual slide into corruption. But now, when Lou’s family is brought to the brink of a tragedy, she must put right the wrongs that she has spent years rationalising and excusing, to have a second chance at a new, better life.

Set and shot entirely in Leeds and West Yorkshire, Better explores the complex and powerful bonds of loyalty and family, set in a world where everyone has their own version of “right” and “wrong”. Examining the power of human conscience, we follow DI Lou Slack’s (Leila Farzad) epic battle towards redemption, by bringing down Col McHugh (Andrew Buchan); the man she has come to love like a brother and the man she has helped place at the head of Leeds criminal underworld. But while Col is a dangerous enemy to make, Lou’s biggest battle may yet be with herself.

I haven't done an unforgotten thread as a couple about so don't want to tread on toes

Watching at broadcast pace. Quite far fetched.
When the main character , Lou spoke on the prison telephone to that guy Wilkes, well prison calls can be recorded. She’s now incriminated herself by talking via a monitored phone line.

sorry to derail thread but Lou and Col had an affair in real life and Andrew Buchanan has left Amy Nuttal for Leila….tut tut.

I think that has put final nail in coffin for me for this series

I was going to watch it from the start this weekend but this story has put me off.

I liked him in Broadchurch, thought he was just an ordinary character actor who played good parts - I remember him in Garrow's Law which I really liked, and that drama about the Great Fire of London 1666 as well. I also remember thinking he was an ordinary guy, just like the bloke who would come and fix your washing machine or burst pipe. Turns out he's a cheating twat like many others!!!

Him and "Naomi Jones" remind me of Matt Hancock and Gina Pinacolada. They even look like them.

his poor wife. must be a specific sort of shite to have your husband leave you for someone else when you're both in the public eye. what a dick.

'I was going to watch it from the start this weekend but this story has put me off.'

It's weird because it's put me off too, I know actors are entitled to their private lives but it jars a bit seeing them both on screen knowing what was going on off screen.

It's shit anyway. I half watched ep 3 but he looks like a school teacher rather than a gangland boss and Lou is just ridiculous. Getting in the Range Rover at the car wash place in broad daylight, just why.

I might force myself to watch the last 2 eps to hopefully see her get her comeuppance, I noted Esther given her the side eye a few times so hopefully she'll do a LOD on her.

WakeMeUpInspring · 28/02/2023 14:06

They have no charisma in the show. Poor Amy.

I didn't watch This England but a colleague just told me AB played Hancock in that! What did I say, he looks like him and acts like him! Talk about method acting

ilovebrie8 · 28/02/2023 14:16

Andrew Buchanan was great in Broadchurch and Garrows Law but I don’t find him credible as a gangster in this nope!

ilovebrie8 · 28/02/2023 14:17

They’ve both left their marriages according the the newspapers! Wow 😳

the80sweregreat · 28/02/2023 14:34

As a gangster in this, so far , his been very wishy washy! Menacing sometimes, but too clean cut looking to be really scary

butterpuffed · 28/02/2023 14:58

Regardless of what's going on in RL , this drama is improving every week . Esther has rumbled Lou but I have to suspend belief when Lou is spilling the beans to her almost immediately .

ilovebrie8 · 28/02/2023 17:15

Yep was very surprised when she spilt the beans so quickly to Esther!

louise5754 · 28/02/2023 20:03

Which is better. This, Desperate Measures or new Unforgotten. Got all 3 recorded but not sure the first two are worth it? x

Unforgotten is soooo good.
I'm really enjoying The Gold as well. I didn't know much about the case, and Hugh Bonneville being not posh is fantastic in it.

I couldn't get into that

I did a thread. Watched e1 and deleted series link which is unlike me

I didn't realise quite how big the gold haul was, and I was fascinated to hear that if you bought gold in the 80s/90s it's probably got some Brinks Mar gold in it.

Dulra · 01/03/2023 08:05

Yep was very surprised when she spilt the beans so quickly to Esther!
Wonder will she try and convince her she is doing it to bring him down and the old cliché "just give me a bit more time you'll see...."

I think he is good as a gangland boss, comes across as not that bad and quite meek but you just know he will have a seriously evil side when tested. We got a glimpse of it in the restaurant.

Not impressed with their off screen shenanigans

Blondeshavemorefun · 01/03/2023 10:21

Did they get together while making this

OP posts:
Blondeshavemorefun · 01/03/2023 10:26

According to google yes - and chemistry

Tho they hasn't even snogged have they

I could almost understand it if they had an affair and kept kissing on screen

But why wreck two marriages 🥲

Ironic that this show is called Better, because Amy Nuttall can do better than her horrible husband. I don't think I can watch it because of this pair of rats, it would take the focus off the show.
