CC off-roading through Russia, gets pulled in as a Western spy.

”I’m not a bloody spy, love. And you can tell that wankertron Putin that from me. Twat.”

"D'ye think if I was a spy you'd have ever sussed me out? I'm far cleverer than that. Now give us me scarf back don't even try to de-code the knitting it's just stocking stick and me sister made it for me. And no, I don't want a beetroot sandwich, thanks very much."

<grabs keys from NKVD officer"

"And you'd better not have scratched me paintwork, else Putin's getting a visit and I'll drive the car the length of his bloody table to show him."

EdieLedwell · 08/02/2023 09:16

Had anyone seen the BTS of the in car massacre? James Norton just posted it on his Instagram.

So good.

BIWI · 08/02/2023 09:17

Yes I just watched that!

Now THER'S a travel programme in the making "Catherine Cawood's Himalayan Road Trip" starring Sarah Lancashire.

Sorry Michael Palin - you've been upstaged and outclassed here, son! 😄

There is a programme on BBC called the last overland that is well worth a watch, although sadly no Catherine Cawood.

It recreates a journey done in the 1950s where they drove landovers from London to Singapore, they are redoing it using the same route as far as possible. One of the original vehicles is used and they were supposed to have one of the original drivers but he fell ill and his grandson took his place.

Great programme, and I would be well up for a CC version.

BarbaraofSeville · 08/02/2023 10:12

Oh, I'll look out for that @JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon

I'm fascinated by anything like that. In a time where we can book pretty much anywhere we want online, use sat nav to get places etc, it's a world away from the people who travelled without any of that.

Even when I was a child and DM used to take us all over the place on the bus, I have no idea how she found the park that was half a mile from the bus stop when we got there, or what time the bus back was without the internet.

Or when we drove to northern Spain in a family convoy in the 1990s with only a rudimentary set of directions (I remember we did get lost and separated for a short while when we took a wrong turn, but all was well in the end). The journey took 2 days and we stayed overnight in a basic travelodge type place in the middle of France and we just turned up on the day and hoped we'd get in which we did, with no prebooking or review checking Shock

I read this Guardian (I think?) long read with the head of MI5 and it was basically all about older women making brilliant spies. We're basically invisible - stick a clipboard in our hand and we can go anywhere - calm and good at reading emotions and situations. I've been obsessed with it ever since to be honest, though DH says I've blown it already cos I've told everyone I'm going to be a spy when I grow up.

This sounds promising. As long as it doesn’t feature Suranne Jones I don’t mind. She made Gentleman Jack unwatchable for me.

BarbaraofSeville · 08/02/2023 11:40

@LaviniasBigBloomers , you're probably right. As well as being invisible, no-one suspects us of being up to no good either.

I visit different companies for work and within the last few months, gained access to fairly secure sites on more than one occasion without the correct credentials in a way that a 20 something man probably never would have been allowed.

Once I didn't have the right ID, was still allowed in, another time, I forgot who I was going to see and just about made a name up on the spot and got in (eg I was supposed to be seeing John Smith, but had forgotten to write it down, asked for James Stewart by mistake, no-one of that name they said, then the security guard started reading names of everyone who worked there until I recognised the right one), that sort of thing.

LaviniasBigBloomers · 08/02/2023 12:47

Ooh @BarbaraofSeville should we start a detective agency? CC can join us when she's back her hols.

I'm 70 and am still waiting to grow up. If When I do can we sit next to each other in Spy School?

I liked her in Scott and Bailey, and as one of Steve's umpteen wives in Corrie, but other than that she leaves me cold.

I thought it was amazing. I hadn't watched the previous series as I didn't fancy it but wish I had now. Both the writing and the acting are incredible.

When Clare said 'there's still tea in that pot' I cried. It reminded me so much of my late mum and dad. It's exactly what they would have said in such a situation. And I carried on crying as it was all so clever and so moving.

Sarah Lancashire and James Norton were exceptional. She has an unrivalled ability to show and convey suppressed emotion.

MavisMcMinty · 08/02/2023 19:24

I cried for the last half hour. Tears are just emotion in liquid form, for me.

Pemba · 08/02/2023 19:46

@Renoir56 series 1 and 2 are available on BBC iplayer if you can get that? For about a year. Or you could buy them on Amazon or Apple TV.

I agree with most on here, that it was brilliant. That final scene between Catherine and Tommy Lee Whatsit! Although he's been a monster you can see how he became that way, and pity him. And he dies without understanding what he's done, although he is capable of love in his own way. That's fantastic writing and acting!

Although yes, I would have liked a bit more shown to complete the stories of Rob the horrible PE teacher, and Faisal the weaselly pharmacist. It felt a bit as though they just ran out of time, but I can see the point that it was intended deliberately, to show that the police work would carry on without Catherine, and nothing is ever fully resolved.

LadyEloise1 · 08/02/2023 20:08

Oh I'd love to be in Spy School.
I'd be good. One police man told me I was the best witness he'd ever come across. Smile

Thank goodness CC or Ryan weren't killed in the denouement. Though it would probably be more realistic.
I don't mind that the Pfizer and Neckbeard stories weren't wrapped up and I usually like tv and movies wrapped up.
Wee Poppy has a loving granny and grandad. Hopefully she'd turn out ok.

CuriousMama · 08/02/2023 20:08

My youngest ds (22) has just started watching HV. I'm quite envious. He's on episode 3.

@LaviniasBigBloomers WISE GALS by Nicholas Holt on Audiobooks BBC Sounds . The story of women spies in WWII , the Cold War and starting in the new CIA. Fascinating stuff and a great listen.
