@CuriousMama definitely, there are some fabulous walks...but you have to like hills Grin

Davros · 07/02/2023 19:05

I'm just watching SL as Julia Child in "Julia". Amazing acting, what a contrast

2bazookas · 07/02/2023 19:26

I just thought it was a triumph of writing .. and acting, and imagery.

After his escape; Tommy fled to the high moors, leaps off the bike; such a superb physical specimen. He stretches out his arms and embraces his freedom and the open horizon as if he's king of the world.

And at the end; Catherine describes his lovely son Ryan ending with "He's a prince.

Tommy and Ryan are sides of the same coin; both born into terrible circumstances; one damned but the other saved . They were forced apart, then drawn back to each other like magnets, and finally father and son understand something of each other, and more of themselves.

Just superb.

And finally... SW needs no more words. Catherine's no-scarf bare neck and bright fitted jumper say it all.

Rightsraptor · 07/02/2023 19:39

I'm just off to re-watch the final episode. I shan't need to be peeping through fingers or around the side of a cushion this time as I know what happens of course.

Having read today's comments, I've got a list of points to look and listen out for, so thank you.

One thing that has always struck me about HV is the juxtaposition of the grim, gritty storylines with the glorious landscape. The scene where the would-be killers and Tommy were standing by the car engaging in their life & death conversation, while the view beyond them was stunning, really highlighted it for me. But they neither noticed nor appreciated it, it seems. They were hell bent on destruction.

allsogreen · 07/02/2023 18:44

In the final episode, when TLR points out she was kicking him too on the barge, and she says that was "In The Line of Duty" - anyone else like to think that was possibly a sneaky reference to Line of Duty (series) and a sort of "this is how to do a good ending!" dig after the fiasco of their ending!?! 😆

Yes! And the music at the end as she walks to the disused land where the car was, was VERY LoD

I know this is really about S3, but someone had been back to the start of S1, either on this thread or the last one. I've just watched the beginning of S1E1, and like PP said, it's there from the start, the call-out for CC and Kirsten to the drunk man in the playground, threatening to set fire to himself. Then a little bit later C and C and little Ryan go to the graveyard and Ryan notices the pens on Sylvia Plath's grave and there's poetry on her gravestone which mentions 'fierce flames' and I think she killed herself, not by setting fire to herself, but it's all there.
And I know Kevin was silly and greedy in a way but it was no fault of his that the damn sack fell and split and he saw the packets of drugs. He just wanted to pretend that he hadn't seen anything but Ashley wouldn't let him and so he changed his mind.

@upinaballoon yes apparently sw had the 3 series and ending from s1

So yes little clues are there now we know

Did anyone else think that had things been different Tommy would have made a great policeman? He was so observant.

sweatervest · 07/02/2023 20:42

when cc said "it was in the line of fucking duty" i half expected her to do a wink to the camera.

i am still sad that it's over and sad that tlr will never grace our screens again.
havent been this sad since my guinea pig died. oh shallow one of the south that i am.

LindorDoubleChoc · 07/02/2023 20:44

I re-watched S1 a couple of weeks ago and was completely taken (in that retrospective way you do) with how the whole entire saga wouldn't have happened if those bags of sand hadn't somehow accidentally split at just the very moment in time when the Kevin Pemberton character was watching and also that he recognised what the packs inside the sand bags were. I mean, so unlikely! But I guess every story has to have a starting point.

ilovebrie8 · 07/02/2023 21:11

Where did you rewatch S1 @LindorDoubleChoc ? Thanks

XanaduKira · 07/02/2023 21:17

It's on BBC IPlayer @ilovebrie8 as I watched season 1 episode 1 again tonight.

I feel the same @LindorDoubleChoc but with Nev - if he'd just said yes when asked for the money in the first place, none of it would have happened (at least regarding Anne).

upinaballoon · 07/02/2023 21:33

the grim, gritty story lines

They've been so gri''y it's a wonder Sean Bean didn't turn up in them somewhere.

Soonenough · 07/02/2023 21:39

Despite some musings, Neill then is exactly who he said he was.
And I thought they going to Majorca and Tommy talking about Marbella was somehow going to be linked.
Not a very good guesser , me.

fairypeasant · 07/02/2023 22:32

Everyone was exactly who they said they were- that's Happy Valley. The only "surprises" are when pathetic men turn violent/nasty to women. Which is just what pathetic men do, so not really surprising. Neil was pathetic, but boring.

CuriousMama · 07/02/2023 23:01

Con o Neil is in Nolly. Just watching it.

EdieLedwell · 07/02/2023 23:15

Just a quick point. Did anyone read the text message trail between Catherine and Mike?

"When are you all off to the Highlands?"

So she wasn't leaving Ryan to head to the Himalayas

FlyRobinFly · 08/02/2023 00:46

In all fairness, maybe now with TLR dealt with Catherine has had time to research her trip plans and has realised she can’t actually drive to the Himalayas without driving through several bodies of water and various different warzones! So she’s probably settled for the highlands instead.

FlyRobinFly · 08/02/2023 00:53

Because I’m a saddo I was trying to work out how she could make it to the Himalayas and the only way she could do it without having to pass through Ukraine/Iraq/Syria/Iran/Afghanistan is if she goes through Russia, goes off-road in central Russia (which only has dirt roads, she’d need to utilise the off-road abilities of the landrover in harsh terrain) and drives south through rural southern Russia to then cross over in to Mongolia, then China, then reaching Nepal.

I guess if anybody could do it it’s Catherine.

If I was going to drive to himalayas I'd start by getting a ferry from Scotland to norway

Saucery · 08/02/2023 06:42

I think the ‘Himalayas’ thing was a family joke. Like Catherine bought the Land Rover and planned to go exploring in Scotland, but Ryan or Claire said it was the Himalayas instead and it stuck.

You would need a heart of stone not to grieve over a guinea pigs. I still miss ours Their little "whoops" and "chi rps"of delight when I went to feed them and the way they shouldered each other out of the way to get the cucumber.

They were gorgeous!

Now THER'S a travel programme in the making "Catherine Cawood's Himalayan Road Trip" starring Sarah Lancashire.

Sorry Michael Palin - you've been upstaged and outclassed here, son! 😄

JaneJeffer · 07/02/2023 18:34

Oh no @upinaballoon what Kevin did is unforgivable! He ruined so many lives by his actions.

@JaneJeffer , I think the time has come when we all have to admit to ourselves that the fanciable Ashley had destroyed many lives by being an evil drug-runner, and the sometime fanciable Tommeh was a murderer and rapist.

It's ok to think Mr. Taylor or Andy-on-the-stairs aren't unattractive, because they're goodies.

CC off-roading through Russia, gets pulled in as a Western spy.
