Agreed @Emotionalsupportviper Faisal will fold like a pack of cards. To be fair, I would like to have seen that interview!

Police interviewer: We'd just like to ask you about this, Mr Bhatti

<slides blister pack from probation officer across table>

Faisal: I DID IT! I KILLED HER! PLEASE DON'T TELL MY WIFE I WAS SH*GGING HER AS WELL!!!

<interviewee breaks down sobbing>

Had anyone visited or lives there?

Bunionbabe · 07/02/2023 09:15

Faisal was supplying lots of people with drugs. Alison's probation officer for one. So not much of an alibi as an act of kindness to Jo.

honeylulu · 07/02/2023 09:20

Rob wasn't "cleared of murder". The implication was they expected him to be but needed more evidence as he had not confessed. The indecent images gave them a basis to charge him for something else and carry on holding him in the meantime. But then CC made the drugs link so it was suggested Faisal would be investigated and given that he's a nervous wreck he would break and confess to the killing pretty quickly. He did wear gloves but don't forget he's been in her house several times without gloves and they'd had sex so his DNA is everywhere. And Rob was at school at the time of the murder (though time of death might be obscured because her body was concealed for a couple of days at least).

honeylulu · 07/02/2023 09:23

I did find the tablets under the sofa at Allison's house a lazy link tbh. Also felt a bit like "oh we got Allison back for this series so we'd better give her something to do".

CaptainMyCaptain · 07/02/2023 09:30

I think Alison was there because was protecting her son and Catherine identified with that protective instinct. She killed him because he had done awful things but she didn't want him to suffer in prison. She had to go to jail but she was no danger to anyone else.

I agree Faisal will most likely break down and tell all.

By not tying up all the loose ends SW has stimulated a lot of discussion and conjecture which is surely a sign of a good work of art. The characters have taken on a life of their own and we are left wanting to know more.

qazxc · 07/02/2023 10:30

Do they suspect Faisal of the murder or just the fact that he has been supplying probation officer and Jo with drugs? (presumably they can check that they are the same as the ones confiscated during Jo arrest.
The fact that they were talking about "who will care for the girls" makes me think they will go ahead and charge neckbeard. Sadly making and having child abuse images, does not equate a custodial sentence. There's a fair chance he would walk free from those charges (with a community order and inclusion to the sex offender registry).

SoNoWrecksToday · 07/02/2023 10:35

I watched the last episode last night, after avoiding tv, radio, internet, friends and colleagues all day!!

Wow, SW is a phenomenon. I absolutely love that she wrote their final acts so subtly in the end. Beautifully done.

I also love how drugs and the destruction they cause was woven throughout, and affected the lives of the different characters. The scumbag drug lords, the beaten wife, the middle class families, the groomed and neglected children who will likely turn to selling them or taking them and even the unhappy social worker, who we didn’t meet, but whose job it is to support all the above.

They said during the investigation they needed to find out who supplied the drugs to Joanna so they clearly thought that person would be a suspect or link. So they will investigate Faisal. Whether they find evidence or not we don't know.

I'm shocked if indecent images of a child he teaches wouldn't be enough for prison for Rob, (it's bound to be treated more seriously than anonymous images downloaded - teachers can be prosecuted for sex with a pupil even if over 16 for example) or at least to have his kids removed from him, so I think they know he won't be looking after the girls for a while whatever happens.

Both these teachers groomed and raped a pupil, both got away with a non custodial sentence.
I found another example of a teacher grooming and having an "inappropriate relationship" with a 13yr old that was sentenced for only 9 months.
Sadly these crimes have a fair chance of receiving lenient sentences.

Twatling · 07/02/2023 11:02

Not sure if it's been mentioned upthread, but did anyone notice the date of Neckbeard's police interview was 23/9/22 and CC was off on her travels on 3rd September (according to her last text message from Mike Taylor). Production error? Or perhaps there was more to the original storyline?

Wow I am surprised by that.

I think he'd at least lose access to his kids if he was done for indecent images of children wouldn't he? Which was the original question - why were the police so sure the grandparents would be looking after the kids.

Blondeshavemorefun · 07/02/2023 11:17

And it was heartbreaking as he looked around Ryan's bedroom and saw everything he's never had. Not the material things, the emotional ones - love, comfort, protection, security, the knowledge that you can be as naughty as you like an you'll still be precious to your family. You don't have to be rich to offer these to your child.

Tommy's mother's life was so chaotic she couldn't offer these things to him. She was a drug addict - and that will have affected his foetal development, too, so maybe he was "born wrong", but her inability to love, protect and cherish him will have compounded any "missing bits". And her hideous death flipped a switch in him, too. She might have been useless as a mother, and I know he treated her like muck, but that doesn't mean that deep inside him he wasn't aching for the mother he should have had.

My heart ached for them both. So damaged - she took out her pain on herself, and he took out his on the world.

All this @Emotionalsupportviper

Which means sw is a very clever and talented writer

That we changed how we viewed Tommy

I watched it earlier and thought they did say they were charging 'neckbeard' Grin based on the bloody fingerprint on the chair (leftover from an earlier assault?)

I know it's supposed to have ended, but obviously they could do another series to show them catching up with Faisal and Ryan joining as a PSCO.

Somewhere else they could go is Catherine coming back after a couple of years of travelling around the world and taking over from Joyce, who herself was a retired copper who couldn't completely give the job up so worked on the front desk.

Much as I would like to see that I think it is probably best to leave on a high with us all speculating.

qazxc · 07/02/2023 11:32

In regards to neckbeards own children, there would be SS involvement and a risk assessment. But as the abuse (sexual or physical) did not involve the children/ his sexual preference seems to be teenage boys, not young girls/ it is a "first offence"/ he is the only parent left/.... There's a fair chance he wouldn't lose the children.

JaneJeffer · 07/02/2023 11:33

I live about 20 miles away but go hiking in that area quite a lot. Hebden Bridge is quite a popular tourist town.

Because I do know the area, I've recognised a lot of places, but also noticed that where they say they are and distances between places don't always ring true. Not that it matters of course.

For example the court scenes and newsagent where TLR picked up his bike to escape weren't in Leeds, but in a disused court in Bolton I believe, but he was shown riding along the streets of Leeds, which is nearly 30 quite hilly miles from the reservoir where he rode to and was picked up in a van.

It's also quite a remarkable achievement that he was able to ride there on a road bike, which are quite a challenge to ride if you're not used to them, after so long in prison.

CaptainMyCaptain · 07/02/2023 11:46

I live near Sheffield and there isn't a prison there. The 'Sheffield' scenes in the cafe etc were also filmed in Bolton I believe. Artistic licence.

CaptainMyCaptain · 07/02/2023 11:47

Artistic license?

True, I had forgotten about that. But I think that it was more about having an easy to control partner rather than a sexual preference.

I want a spin-off about Tweeledum’s jilted bride. Catherine will take her under her wing!

I wonder if she was left standing at the altar or someone told her.
