@borisescomb

The only caring aspect we've seen from her is her trying to help Joanna. Otherwise she seems to pretty much hate everyone in this series! Maybe she's just had enough.

Do you not think you would have had enough?! There's plenty of reason for her to dislike all those around her right now - even Our Ryan.

And it's not only with Joanna that we see the caring side of her - it was clear in the way that she dealt with Alison, right from the beginning when she discovered that she'd killed her son.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 01/02/2023 10:34

Julia Ford was in series 1. She was married to Kevin, Nev's accountant, who got a teeny bit greedy.

Oh yes thank you. The photos don't help as they are pretty old.

Rhondaa · 01/02/2023 10:49

Can't believe that is TLR's mother Lynn Dewhurst Shock. Always felt a bit sorry for her when she was laid prone top of stairs post cellar attack and all the police folk stepped over her, no one seemed to notice there was an unconscious woman on t'floor.

@blobby10

That's kind of a spoiler as some of us are avoiding trailers.

martinisforeveryone · 01/02/2023 10:57

Pauline Jefferson was Catherine’s elderly neighbour who took in the woman escaping slavery?

Thank you wow had no idea about that one.

No I agree, it's in keeping with the character I guess I just find the misery and cynicism a bit repetitive at this point. You're right, she's been very kind to Allison too. Not sure if she has a bigger part to play in this or if she was just there for the car share.

Catherine is a great, strong character I think I would just like to see her crack a smile by the end, hopefully TLR will get his comeuppance and she can be happy finally.

@louise5754 I'm SO sorry - didn't even think of that! Is it too late to ask admin to remove the post?

I'm not that fussed but others may want it deleting.

blobby10 · 01/02/2023 11:00

@louise5754 I haven't seen the trailer either - just some screenshots of the two people mentioned on the Daily Mail website!

ShittyPeasantsFromHampshire · 01/02/2023 11:00

I think we sometimes forget that whilst the three series of HV have been over several years for us, the storyline only covers a few months.

No. they, as well as us, are 8 years on from the events in series 1. Ryan is the barometer, going from small boy in primary school to giant teen approaching adulthood.

If the storyline only covers a few months how does Ryan age by a decade and how does the farmer complete an entire prison sentence plus a million other things

The storyline covers years!?!?

blobby10 · 01/02/2023 11:06

@ShittyPeasantsFromHampshire @Christmaspyjamas of course you are both right! It makes perfect sense to my sleep deprived peri brain now but I saw something yesterday that said in ep 1 CC said she was retiring in something like 7 months 4 days and 3 hours which is why I made that comment! Note to self - double check before commenting in future 😫😫

martinisforeveryone · 01/02/2023 11:16

louise5754 · 01/02/2023 10:58

Thank you wow had no idea about that one.

In real life she’s 93 years old and British 😀

I think we still see a lot of Catherine’s kind side helping victims, her career’s not all been about nabbing gangsters. She’s a real pillar of the community even if her stock in trade is tough love and she certainly doesn’t suffer fools.

I don’t know how you move on from the traumas she’s suffered. Don’t forget she had a breakdown. Clare’s moved on from her demons by nurturing a much softer side.

WRT Darius he’s all about risk and reward and Catherine’s demise isn’t going to benefit him, whereas if the policewoman is either Catherine or Ann, for Tommy it’s personal and a matter of revenge. Cold revenge even, although, they’re actually all on alert now, so not that cold.

LadyEloise1 · 01/02/2023 11:27

I just love the way she corrects Ryan's grammar.

CrossPurposes · 01/02/2023 11:29

martinisforeveryone · 01/02/2023 10:57

That was Angela Pleasence (Donald's daughter).

JemimaPyjamas · 01/02/2023 11:29

@Christmaspyjamas THIS storyline covers a few months, not every storyline! It's been 7 (I think) years since the last series, hence Alison is now out of prison on probation and Ryan is now 16/

Maestro12 · 01/02/2023 11:34

I don’t agree we haven’t seen a more positive side of Catherine this series - the first episode she was pretty positive ( Ryan’s birthday, chat with Claire, even the bit when she went in to the school and chatting with Ryan afterwards - also that she is so attuned and protective of him when she’s watching the football).

The change came largely after she discovered she has been hugely betrayed by Claire ( Neil) and Ryan. I know Ryan is just a kid but I imagine it still feels like a massive betrayal emotionally - she has tried to be there for him and referenced again in the first episode how he had had lots of behaviour issues ( that now seem much less). That’s hard even without the background trauma. She is also surrounded by people being fairly useless tbh.

Given the betrayal was only about a week ago I think - seems completely understandable she is the way she is to me.

Can anyone remind me who these characters were / are?

www.aveleyman.com/TVEpisode.aspx?FilmID=3829&Episode=20140429
Pauline Jefferson is briefly seen (out of focus) at the very beginning of series 1 episode 1.

My mistake. Thanks for the correction 😊

Christmaspyjamas · 01/02/2023 11:56

@JemimaPyjamas oh!!! Hahaha sorry. For a moment I was so confused!

upinaballoon · 01/02/2023 11:57

I have to go back and look at what Ann said to Ryan. I think he said that TLR said he loved Becky and Ann told him that saying something like that means nothing ( I think!). She really laid it on the line. Ryan is understanding that Granny's undemonstrative tough love is love and when TLR says he loves Ryan he, Ryan, has Ann's words in his brain now as well as TLR's, so he needs to wonder exactly what they really mean.

I love the post two pages back about Mums who didn't have time for the lovey-dovey. It chimes in with something I read very many years ago - "Love is not something simple which you feel. It is something difficult which you do." That's CC and what she has done for Ryan all through.
