I heard it was to prevent spoilers leaking but I could be wrong.

The alternative endings will all be available on the Series 3 DVD apparently.

Ah okay. From what you say it sounds like it might have been an economic decision too, as all the superfans will then be sure to purchase the DVD box set.

Pardon me for quoting myself (narcissistic tendencies, obviously) but in the interests of full disclosure I should say we would often add "old" before it, like the Irish PP said.

Not far. My eldest lives there. And nope still wouldn't be said.

Emotionalsupportviper · 30/01/2023 22:22

All I can think is that I am of a different generation Mama, and the practice must be dying out, because it would certainly be said round here.

Mr Viper (aged 77), refers to his elder brother as "Our lad."etc

MrsAvocet · 30/01/2023 22:32

I'm also from the Frozen North (though not Newcastle) and yes, lad and lass are applicable at any age here. Agree that it's quite likely to be "t'ole lad" if the lad in question is beyond about 70, but a lad remains a lad til death. My teens and their friends do use the terms so definitely not entirely generational here, though it's true that I get called "lass" by older people more than by younger ones. I got referred to as "the young lass" recently, which as I'm in my mid 50s I rather liked!

AntonDuPig · 30/01/2023 22:39

@Emotionalsupportviper
as a consolation prize for missing the wedding

😂 You really do want to give that hat an airing don’t you!

<Scans TV land for a whiff of anything potentially weddingy to escort Emotionalsupportviper to…>

colouringindoors · 30/01/2023 22:41

TLR is deaded.

Last scene is Ryan getting on a train, with luggage, leaving all of them and everything behind.

Happysalley · 30/01/2023 22:43

If the ending doesn't include a brutal punch up between Catherine and TLR then I don't want it. I think it would be a huge anti climax if he was offed by anyone else.

foxlover47 · 30/01/2023 22:59

Maybe Catherine is there at the end as tommys dying and he does apologise as he's on his way , maybe her duty as a police officer will result in her trying to save his life or maybe she even forgives him if he apologises ... for her own self as she can't go on hating anymore
I don't know I'm just thinking ... again 😅

Cactusali · 30/01/2023 23:00

Just me who found it ridiculously dark? Not in terms of material as that’s a given, but really poorly lit.

upinaballoon · 30/01/2023 23:02

Emotionalsupportviper · 30/01/2023 21:43

I'm wondering if Beetroot Man (who is obviously as hard as nails and with a lifetime in the Stasi/KGB/ NKVD/ criminal underworld behind him - probably as a torturer) is keeping an eye on TLR via the "f*cking wi-fi" and knows he is in danger of revealing his whereabouts, putting the OCG in danger.

Maybe he eviscerates Tommy with his beetroot knife.

If there are 4 different endings, I hope that they will show the alternative ones over the next few weeks as a consolation prize for missing the wedding not getting another series.

Then we can vote on which one we like the best.

😁😁😁

upinaballoon · 30/01/2023 23:05

When teacher went to his mother's and Florence went to hug him he looked at Poppy twice, over Florence's shoulder. I don't know whether that's just a spot of red herring or very significant.

afty · 30/01/2023 23:09

I think the very last scene will be Catherine and Ryan going off travelling into the sunset in her Land Rover. Seems v. telling when he was asking in a previous episode if he could go with her too... ??

Like on Dr. Foster? (ish)

MichaelAndEagle · 30/01/2023 23:11

As much as Claire totally betrayed Catherine I do think a lot of it was brought on by Catherine's refusal to really talk to Ryan about his mum or dad.

I've literally watched all series 1, 2 and 3 up to date in the last week, having seemingly missed it before now!

So new to the thread and probably going to say stuff you've all already mentioned a billion times - sorry!!

Bless the lovely softies walking among us who think it would be quite nice really if Catherine forgave TLR!

foxlover47 · 30/01/2023 23:15

@MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake
I'm just thinking of all possibilities, as forgiveness was mentioned.
I've read of people forgiving their child's killers etc in real life so going along the lines of maybe she has just had enough of hatred and wants to be free of all the pain
Mind you .. I have to get a grip on myself at times as I do start to think Tommy really does love Ryan , it's the writing it's phenomenal.. empathising with a murdering rapist is not something I would usually do !

MichaelAndEagle · 30/01/2023 23:15

We haven't seen his really nasty side recently. I think Ryan will witness something first hand that will make him see TLR for who he really is.

Ha ha. I get it!

afty · 30/01/2023 23:19

I hope Ryan doesn't do a 'Harrison Morgan' ...

Probably when TLR tries to kill his granny

EyesOnThePies · 30/01/2023 23:29

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 30/01/2023 17:20

That was my interpretation too

Yes, and adds to the general sense of TLR being left disconcerted and abandoned. Dumped outside a locked house, not told who to look for or expect.

I also thought he was cautiously checking it was even the right house.

EsmaCannonball · 30/01/2023 23:32

If they have filmed five different endings it doesn't mean that Sally Wainwright hasn't committed to her planned ending, just that four of the endings are deliberate red herrings. However, I'm a bit dubious about the claim. Filming, especially location filming, is ridiculously expensive. It's a five figure sum for every hour on location. If the five different endings are the same scene but with a different person dying or a few line changes, then that's one thing. If they are five radically different endings then that would be a huge amount of money to spend on scenes that were never intended to reach the screen.

Rightsraptor · 30/01/2023 23:34

So sorry not had time to rtt so forgive if this has been raised already but did you notice the senior cop said at the briefing that Joanna's blood had been found all over the house?

I can't think that Faisal would be so daft as to wander around post murder. So if it's blood from the times Rob has beaten her, it bodes ill for him. He can hardly say 'oh yes, that's where I beat her up for not cleaning the bath, and that's where I lamped her for giving me the side eye. But, honest guv, that blood in the kitchen is nowt to do with me'. The police would never wear that.

Night all.

redspottedmug · 30/01/2023 23:38

On the Shrine podcast, the director stated that SW had written one ending.

Ryan won't leave until he's done his GCSEs!

Kirsten’s death was horrid. I remember I was watching with my mum who had previously been gripped, she made me turn it off after that and refused to have it on again.

One of the haunting things about it was that she talked about herself in the past tense. I think I remember her saying into her radio as she lay on the ground "He's killed me." or similar. It was terrible.
