Father Brown Series 10 - No Mrs McCarthy?!!

Bit gutted as she was hilarious. Who will make the award winning strawberry scones now? The police inspector has also gone (Inspector Sullivan has returned instead) and Bunty is away travelling and won't be back. One of the wayward girls is going to play a big part instead and the new parish secretary loves crime mysteries.

It all feel different. I'm waiting for Flambeau.

Only being shown on Fridays but the whole series is on iPlayer.

Isn’t it just?
I was thrilled when she got on the train. So, so disappointed when she left off. This series is just awful.

S10 was terrible. FB had two advantages--good mysteries, and interesting lead characters. If the mysteries were just okay, the banter between Sid, Mrs. McCarthy, and Lady F would be worth tuning in. But this season's mysteries were weak. And Mrs. Devine and Brenda are so badly written/miscast, they simply can't help carry the show. Glad to see Sullivan back, but the show has lost a lot of what made it fun. 😥

Ellmau · 05/01/2024 21:53

Has Brenda's acting improved? She didn't seem as irritating in the first ep of series 11.

Blondeshavemorefun · 05/01/2024 22:15

It recorded today but haven't seen

So a new series

Roystonv · 05/01/2024 22:19

Haven't dared watch it yet, too much change and some awful acting. Has it got better?

greengreengrass25 · 05/01/2024 22:20

It was ok but Isabel is so irritating

CavalierApproach · 05/01/2024 23:26

wow, is it that time again?

Fond as I am of old Father B, I feel more dread than pleasure at the thought of a new series 😞

sunshinesupermum · 05/01/2024 23:37

Ist Episode of series 11 was good but still not quite as good as pre series 10.

TheAdmiralAndFishermanFavorEntirelyDifferentPies · 06/01/2024 10:08

I think having Ingrid Oliver in a guest spot just shows up how awful Mrs Devine and that girl are. I'm two episodes in, I was hoping they would keep the nun and IO and bump off Mrs D and whatsherface but alas it doesn't look like it.

mogtheexcellent · 07/01/2024 21:07

I enjoyed the sister boniface episode (ep 2) and the fifferent famed in the 'olympicks' were fun. Annoying brenda is less annoying imo, so far that is. Perhaps one of the writers or producers is a mumsnetter and they have toned her down?

May binge the rest when wfh on tues.

I have watched them all now, and it is better than the last series- there are some decent guest stars, and both Brenda and Mrs Devine do improve. (Brenda still gurns too much Grin)

I don't mind binging it- as there is no long running plot - unless you count the Inspector/Mrs D relationship (which is not really a spoiler) all the episodes are one offs with no cliff hangers. So it really doesn't matter if you watch all Grin.
I do wish they would go back to showing them all over 2 weeks in the post Doctors slot. There is no benefit in spreading it over 10 weeks on a Friday.

It is better than endless quiz shows and flipping Sarah recycling stuff from tips. Grin

Feel the same @CavalierApproach

Started watching this am and got bored 🥲

TheAdmiralAndFishermanFavorEntirelyDifferentPies · 11/01/2024 19:57

I know it's formulaic, but I'm watching now and I cannot understand why Sergeant Chambers bothers to do any policing at all. He always jumps in and arrests at least two people before Father Brown decides the murderer is someone else. After 11 series why doesn't he just sit back with a cup of tea until Fr Brown points out the right person? I'm sure the Constable would be on board with that. Perhaps he could spend the time painting a new village sign - "visitors will be murdered."

Deering24 · 11/01/2024 20:11

One of the many, many, many reasons to be dismayed by FB these past two seasons is how Sullivan's character has been so thoroughly trashed. 😔 😔He at least would follow the evidence and build a case when he was last on the show. And his beef with the Father was a realistic one--amateur sleuthing put folks in danger and could easily wreck a court case. He'd make mistakes, but that was usually because he didn't know the village and the people as well as FB. (As well, Kembleford is not exactly a normal village. 😉) But, now...well, he's so busy being Devine's handbag and "Mr. Kembleford" that his professionalism and his previously fascinating character has gone by the board. 😔🤬

TheAdmiralAndFishermanFavorEntirelyDifferentPies · 12/01/2024 08:50

I think everyone's professionalism has gone by the board. You don't see Fr Brown doing any actual priesting, and neither Brenda or Mrs Devine do anything housekeeper-like, unlike Mrs McCarthy.

And why did I think the policeman was Chambers not Sullivan?

kazzaD66 · 12/01/2024 12:11

Tom Chambers is the actor playing Sullivan.

Agreed. Mrs. McCarthy had her hands full just scheduling FB’s routine church activities alone. I’m wondering how the presbytery even pays its bills with a scatterbrain like Devine running things. The show is so desperate to make her this glamorous Grace Kelly/brilliant Sherlock Holmes combination, she comes off as unbelievable and annoying instead.

Bipps1 · 01/02/2025 00:42

Just started watching FB series 12.
The storylines are ridiculous with the same format every week, for example:

An event comes to Kembleford, it normally involves some form of acting. The actors mainly consist of Mrs Devine, annoying Brenda, the detective, Goodfellow and FB. Somebody dies, the inspector arrests the wrong person, FB visits them in the police cell and promises them he will find the real killer. In the mean time the event carries on even though they have lost an actor who's has been murdered and another arrested for murder.
The inspector and Goodfellow carry on with their acting parts. FB Finds out who the real killer is with the help of Devine and nauseating Brenda. The innocent person is released from the police station and everyone goes home happy!
I can't believe I have watched 4 episodes of this tripe, it's gone downhill so rapidly!

woodhill · 01/02/2025 08:33

Bring back Flambo or whatever his name is

TheAdmiralAndFishermanFavorEntirelyDifferentPies · 01/02/2025 10:18

We read the description for the first episode and had to decide whether we'd seen it before or not. It's definitely gone very repetitive.

Ellmau · 01/02/2025 10:50

The actual plots have always been ridiculous. The trouble now is that the supporting actors are terrible.

Floralnomad · 01/02/2025 12:20

We tried 2 episodes of the series with Mrs D and Brenda and gave up , they are both awful and can’t act . I’m actually surprised that Mark Williams still wants to be associated with this drivel .

RaraRachael · 01/02/2025 14:17

Don't know if I'm watching ahead of TV pace but the episode I've just watched is an exact copy of one from another series.
It really is shite now with the simpering Mrs D and awful Brenda bouncing around.

It's gone so far downhill from what it used to be like. I think it's time to put it to bed.

I did think this

saw on bbc 1 in afternoons and wasn’t sure if a repeat or new series

tho think I gave up with last series

Ellmau · 05/02/2025 23:54

I have to say though although the last episode (the Archers spoof) did remind me very strongly of something I've seen before, I actually enjoyed it quite a bit. Brenda was slightly less annoying than usual, and it was entertaining. Best episode this series.

woodhill · 08/02/2025 18:06

This week some cup has been stolen from Vatican and by magic Flambo reappears.

If it's a church matter he will show up and they can rehash the plot
