Father Brown Series 10 - No Mrs McCarthy?!!

Bit gutted as she was hilarious. Who will make the award winning strawberry scones now? The police inspector has also gone (Inspector Sullivan has returned instead) and Bunty is away travelling and won't be back. One of the wayward girls is going to play a big part instead and the new parish secretary loves crime mysteries.

It all feel different. I'm waiting for Flambeau.

Only being shown on Fridays but the whole series is on iPlayer.

Watched 1st ep & was quite hoping that it might be Mrs Devine as the housekeeper & Mrs Burns as the secretary.

Blondeshavemorefun · 26/01/2023 17:34

@BusterGroove would love a new series of that

Again easy watching murders

BusterGroove · 26/01/2023 22:54

I know! I love it, but it’s not looking hopeful. BBC often get rid of the stuff I like - I loved The Coroner a few years ago and they ditched that as well 😡

Raahh · 27/01/2023 09:38

A couple of summers ago, they repeated the Coroner- I had forgotten how good it was. I liked the setting of it.

I used to love the Indian Doctor as well.

The same summer, they repeated Privates- which only ever had one series, and that was a shame and had the very lovely Alex Vlahos (as did the Indian Doctor) in it.

WPC56 was also another afternoon thing I enjoyed. The Beeb do do afternoon dramas pretty well.

I did grow to like the new characters in Father Brown- will be interesting to see if the 'old' ones will make an appearance in future series (Sid has left before and come back, as has Lady F)

mogtheexcellent · 27/01/2023 12:18

I adored the coroner. Was gutted when it was cancelled. Really couldnt get into Hope Street but prob because i know one of the actors who is horrible in real life.

I cant see any news re filling the slot. So maybe we are stuck with garden and antiques programmes? Shame if so.

What channel is that on?

Is it similar to the UK one- I thought that was a bit "fluffy".

Blondeshavemorefun · 27/01/2023 16:43

Sky witness or sky replay

It's very good. More gorey

Than you.

I'm not really enjoying Father Brown that much - too many changes for my brain to cope with - and then bloody Flambeau came back 😓

Roystonv · 29/01/2023 13:59

Just hating it; used to be my safe tv programme. It was never Shakespeare but so poorly written now and laughable plot and acting; just why have they bothered.

diddl · 29/01/2023 14:15

I quite like Mrs Devine but the Brenda character just seems too young to me a housekeeper!

Is Mrs Devine always in the kitchen because she's teaching Brenda?

Floralnomad · 30/01/2023 21:09

We got to episode 3 and have given up . The woman playing Brenda cannot act at all , I love Sullivan and may have got onboard with Mrs Devine but the writing is awful . Such a shame as some of the old episodes are absolutely fabulous .

mogtheexcellent · 30/01/2023 21:23

Anyone remember susie the polish girl from series one? One minute there, then not, and never mentioned again

Hoping brenda is a one series character.

@mogtheexcellent susie did get mentioned again she had run off with a Buddhist .

LadyVictoriaSponge · 30/01/2023 23:57

The Coroner was brilliant I was gutted when it ended particularly as we never got to know if Jane and Davey got together again, poor Annette mind! The scenery was beautiful and the show had so much more to give, it’s frustrating that the BBC do this so often, great dramas just get cancelled yet the endless antique programs carry on for years, cheap to make I assume. The channel 4 coroner is very good but completely different, dark and grisly and not at all cosy!

diddl · 31/01/2023 08:57

I'm not sure if the woman playing Brenda can't act or if it's a bad part tbh.

She's doesn't seem (to me) to have a defined part.

Mrs McCarthy was obviously the housekeeper.

I think I see Mrs Devine doing more housekeeping!

Plus is she supposed to be a teen?

So her sitting chatting with the others doesn't really work imo.

RaraRachael · 31/01/2023 09:44

When it was obvious that most of the regular cast members would be leaving, I think they should have called it a day. Nothing goes on forever and, good as Father Brown was, I just don't feel it's working any more, Nobody wants a previously loved programme to go down the Last Of the Summer Wine road, still churning out episodes long after its sell by date.

diddl · 31/01/2023 09:58

I agree.

The last season should have been the last.

There have been so many I don't think I would even have noticed if it hadn't come back!

Ellmau · 01/02/2023 00:12

Mrs McCarthy was obviously the housekeeper.

Actually she wasn't, she was the parish secretary.

Floralnomad · 01/02/2023 00:19

Mrs McCarthy was the parish secretary like Mrs Devine but she liked looking after Father Brown so did the cooking

diddl · 01/02/2023 08:41

Ah yes!

Thank you!

Itsnotallblackandwhite · 01/02/2023 20:53

she can’t act, she was as bad in the Wayward Girls episode (season 9). I’ve only managed to watch the first episode of the new series, it doesn’t sound like I’m missing much.

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/02/2023 18:49

This weeks

Hercule flambeau

I always liked him

MrsMcCarthysfamousScones · 03/02/2023 21:43

I always like the Flambeau episodes.
Brenda is dire though, she really spoils it.
