Shows Cancelled Before They Are Finished

I might be feeling a bit ranty but is anyone else sick of starting to watch a show, that has been written as a milti-season story with a long range arc - only to then be cancelled after 1 or 2 seasons and so left open ended? No proper conclusion or closure.

I'm starting to resist starting any new series unless I KNOW there is a proper ending or unless several seasons have already been filmed/it is an old series.

Dangerous Liasons, Becoming Elizabeth, 1899, The Midnight Club, Sense8. It's starting to drive me mad.

@northernstars I thought it was so good, but so far you’re the only other person I’ve seen who remembers it!

HassallGreen · 05/01/2023 08:37

Indian Summers
The Village
Glow
Deadwood

Fiji10 · 05/01/2023 09:03

They judge(d) the success of a show by how many new subscribers it pulled in

I had no idea this was their business model. It makes no sense whatsoever! Once I've subscribed, I'll never be able to contribute to the statistics of a new show? Nor an existing one? Utterly bizarre 🥴

SnowdroppersUnite · 05/01/2023 09:15

It's been their business model @Fiji10

Whether that remains so in a world where the number of potential new subscribers is shrinking because they already subscribe or because of the competition from other streamers. That remains to be seen.

If they introduce ads, they will have to care about viewers, I think. Which may make their pyromaniac approach to previous series renewal troublesome because, as a pp said, if Google tells you a series was just dumped without end, you are unlikely to start watching in the first place.

Peak practice from years ago and the reboot of Dallas!! It just ended after a car accident!!

onwardandupwards · 05/01/2023 09:32

Also more recently Atlantas, my dd loved it.

NeedWineNow · 05/01/2023 09:38

@WinterFoxes Tokyo Vice has been renewed for series 2, thankfully as me and DH said the same at the end of the first series.

I miss all of the following which have been mentioned up thread

Indian Summers
Banished
The Living and the Dead
Home Fires

There was also a series called Cuffs about a bunch of coppers set in Brighton. The BBC cancelled it after 1 series but me and DH thought it showed real promise.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 05/01/2023 09:39

Most of mine have already been mentioned...

GLOW
Santa Clarita Diet
Dirty Sexy Money
The Returned

Prodigal son!

i loved this and was so annoyed.

ImprobablePuffin · 05/01/2023 09:41

I've read the whole thread to see if anyone mentions this show... I can't remember what's it's called but maybe 'Under The Dome' or something like that.

There was one season on maybe channel 5 years ago. People were getting sick (possibly turning into zombie like creatures I think) and to stop it spreading they put a dome on top of an entire town. No one seems to remember it but I really enjoyed it and was gutted it was cancelled when left on a real cliffhanger

The Hour (1950s BBC drama with a great cast) cancelled after two seasons due to drop in viewing figures. We really enjoyed it and were disappointed when it was shelved.

I still am furious about this. It ended on such a 'will they, won't they moment'. (It was fully intended to have another series and actors & writers said many times how disappointed they were.

It had super acting, everyone was great. It's criminal this can happen!! 😆

EarringsandLipstick · 05/01/2023 09:44

I hope those at Netflix who keep cancelling the shows I love get syphilis

😂😂😂😂

GLOW, Santa Clarita Diet and The OA for me. I need closure!

The OA should have been a single series, it didn't have all of the answers but it worked. The second series was the biggest mistake, and it's undoing.

Tbh when I thought of what the 'answers' could be after watching series 1, it wasn't what came in series 2. It didn't make sense and was awful.

There were 3 seasons. It was on Irish TV - maybe they didn't show all the seasons on UK channels?

It got very annoying somewhere in season 2 tho.

IIRC it did end reasonably satisfactorily.

Soubriquet · 05/01/2023 09:49

Under the dome was good. Wasn’t a zombie sickness though.

Literally a dome just appeared one day and people began to die.

The society was good too. Till they cancelled that.

There are rumours Wednesday has been cancelled which I hope is false

NotAnotherBathBomb · 05/01/2023 09:50

Don't judge me but for me it's Riner and Revenge 😂

Ringer ended on a cliffhanger as well! I will never get over it

YES! Me and H used to love this and then...poof! Gone.

123ZYX · 05/01/2023 09:50

Jericho - brilliant story, got cancelled then recommissioned briefly to finish the story, but it was clearly rushed rather than the story they'd planned. In a way I wish they'd just left it, rather than the mess of the last series.

ImprobablePuffin · 05/01/2023 09:51

@EarringsandLipstick oh I don't remember seeing anything other than season 1 on British tv but maybe I missed something somewhere. I shall look online. Thanks for replying

HunterHearstHelmsley · 05/01/2023 09:56

HOWEVER...

The Following was cancelled mid-season and extended by a few episodes to tie up the storylines. I so wish that it had just been left on a cliffhanger as it was an absolute clusterfuck.

EarringsandLipstick · 05/01/2023 09:57

Designated Survivor (Netflix)

The Bold Type (tho actually I googled & it has 5 seasons but Netflix just have 3. Every time if appears on my recommended watching I live in hope that there's another season)

Chicago Med (ditto - there are 8 seasons but I think only 4 on Netflix, and it's gone entirely now)

Netflix really need to have complete series if they are going to show programmes at all.

Shelby1981 · 05/01/2023 09:58

Under the dome! Completely botched ending Angry

Under the Dome g.co/kgs/Mr9wFA

Here are the details, maybe there is somewhere you can still watch 🤞

There are lots of things about the Netflix business model that just don’t lead to great outcomes. Using stupid metrics to judge success and not giving a shit about existing customers is just part of that.

It’s not somewhere you’d want to work either. Any feeling of security in your job is not part of the company culture by design. Notoriously.
