Shows Cancelled Before They Are Finished

I might be feeling a bit ranty but is anyone else sick of starting to watch a show, that has been written as a milti-season story with a long range arc - only to then be cancelled after 1 or 2 seasons and so left open ended? No proper conclusion or closure.

I'm starting to resist starting any new series unless I KNOW there is a proper ending or unless several seasons have already been filmed/it is an old series.

Dangerous Liasons, Becoming Elizabeth, 1899, The Midnight Club, Sense8. It's starting to drive me mad.

Anne with an E and Gentleman Jack

I loved Home Fires on ITV and was gutted when they dropped it. I remember the actors and writers being really surprised and upset.

My theory at the time was because it was so female-centric. Actually, that's still my theory now.

American Gods 😫

spiderlight · 05/01/2023 00:57

I will never forgive the BBC for cancelling Holby City. 😭

Annoyingnamechangerperson · 05/01/2023 00:59

Last man on earth for me. I wish they had done at least one more season. The only saving grace was that Will Fort has discussed how he would've liked it to end.

Away

thoroughly enjoyed it, sad there’s no other episodes

Just finished Away, glad it didn't end on a cliff hanger but loved this show and am annoyed that there won't be more.

I'm gutted about 1899. I adored Dark by the same makers, it had such a satisfying conclusion. We were so excited to see how they'd twist and turn the storyline of 1899. Couldn't believe that it was cancelled!

Netflix is really bad for cancelling successful shows after one season, leaving it on an unsatisfying cliffhanger.
Surely this doesn't make business sense? They have an entire back catalogue of one-season shows that nobody will rewatch because one quick Google will tell them it's not worth it?

Fiji10 · 05/01/2023 01:19

Oh my, just remembered The Hour. That was so good, and it just disappeared :(

ScattyHattie · 05/01/2023 01:43

Gutted about 1899 it was weird but I wanted to know where it would go. Watched Dark after & enjoyed that at least. Loved The OA too

They never seem to give time for shows to become growers and attract a later audience from reviews of those that were early watchers, like in the past. I don't know why they expect to attract new subscribers based on individual shows rather than having a great library available. There's been so many I've enjoyed, got attached to the characters only to then find out it was cancelled and left without a conclusion that not sure what point is of all these half done shows or being an early watcher and yet some clearly get dragged on far too long that become dull and have crap ending.

Informer.

Aired on BBC in 2018 I think about a young man who goes undercover as a terrorist informant. Didn't seem to get much press or much coverage on here actually but it was so so good. Starred 'Hari' from Industry as the lead.

@WinterFoxes if you mean the recent Tokyo Vice by Michael Mann (HBO and Amazon Prime) then its definitely been renewed for S2.

S1 is also now on BBC iplayer

@EleanorRavenclaw I absolutely LOVED the strain...so it had at least 2 loyal viewers!

I have just watched Shantaram on Apple TV apparently they are not making another series. The first series ended as if there would be one.
Wished I hadn’t bothered watching.
I must admit Charlie Hunnam trying to do an Australian accent was probably the reason why it was cancelled It was painful to listen to 😀

Thankfully you can read the book ! :-)

Another one that’s based on a book :-) - great news about season 2 though - loved that one

Born and Bred!
Jean is pregnant, Wilf arrested and then.... no more!

Giggorata · 05/01/2023 03:15

Some of my favourites were: Firefly, Farscape, Hannibal, the Irregulars, Angel, Whitechapel, The Lost Room, Millennium, Carnivale, Stargate Universe.

Thoroughly pissed off now, casting my mind back to these. So many excellent shows and actors, carefully constructed universes and sets… especially when I consider some of the simplistic shit that carries on being broadcast. 😡

The Strain although I only ever met one other person who watched it so could explain why it was cancelled 🤣. Had a great cast though and it was utterly bonkers. Also like pp Survivors is an itch that needs scratching.

Yes! DH and I watched this, forgot all about it!
I was gutted for Mindhunter!

JerkintheMerkin · 05/01/2023 04:07

Invasion - jaw dropping ending then nothing!!
Colony - was gripping then nothing!!
Heroes - just such fun to watch then nothing!!

HPLikecraft · 05/01/2023 05:39

I'm still gutted and angry about Flash Forward thirteen years later! It just... stopped! We never found out what happens, nor the reason for the "event". It was a well received series with good ratings. Infuriating.

MissMarplesbag · 05/01/2023 06:09

The garage sale mysteries was cancelled after the main star was jailed irl for the exam grade scandal in America. I wish they continued the series with another actress.

I thought they did wrap-up The Strain, I have just watched it. Have a gander at Disney+

I think it's to do with their business model which, historically, has not cared about viewing figures. They judge(d) the success of a show by how many new subscribers it pulled in. So they were released with a bit of a fanfare to attract new people to the service and no care given if people watched all the show or not.

I don't know if that will change with ads and the fact that new subs are not as forthcoming as they used to be.

But it makes for very frustrating viewing and means I hardly ever start to watch any of their series now because I assume it will get cancelled without an ending. Which leads to me thinking about cancelling on them instead...

Tru Calling. It was just getting really juicy and then they cancelled it. Worst of all they just stopped it mid season. Not even and end of season so at least the storyline was somewhat complete even if they left it with a cliffhanger, but mid season and nothing ☹️ maybe I was the only person who watched it. Eliza Dushku from Buffy and Jason Priestly BH 90210. Still gutted it was really ramping up.

Yes to Tru Calling!!

Also Good Girls. Left that at a cliffhanger too.

Soubriquet · 05/01/2023 07:43

Ah fuck The Wilds!!

Forgot about that. I loved it

msssm · 05/01/2023 08:18

Prodigal son!

Flapjackquack · 05/01/2023 08:23

I hadn’t realised Whitechapel was cancelled I assumed that was how it was supposed to end 😳
