Shows Cancelled Before They Are Finished

I might be feeling a bit ranty but is anyone else sick of starting to watch a show, that has been written as a milti-season story with a long range arc - only to then be cancelled after 1 or 2 seasons and so left open ended? No proper conclusion or closure.

I'm starting to resist starting any new series unless I KNOW there is a proper ending or unless several seasons have already been filmed/it is an old series.

Dangerous Liasons, Becoming Elizabeth, 1899, The Midnight Club, Sense8. It's starting to drive me mad.

I used to love Quantum leap

SecretVictoria · 07/01/2023 16:13

@yummytummy no, they never got home in D&D. A few years ago someone did finish the story off, I think it was on YouTube and still there AFAIK.

Pootle40 · 07/01/2023 16:41

Why women kill was an excellent show but cancelled after two seasons 😟

Back this year for a second but final season

Casualty of COVID that one.

Blast Sad

User963 · 08/01/2023 13:18

Meghan and Harry season 2?🤣

Friends from college, it ends on such a cliffhanger. I wish that they had just hedged and given it a rounder ending.

Also humans, although didn't much like season 4.

The ones that really hurt are the ones that end rushed because they suddenly get cut, like Sabrina and even Game of Thrones.

I watched Friends From College over the Christmas break. Really enjoyed it and was sad that it wasn't renewed after the second series.

FairyLightAddict · 08/01/2023 15:09

Flash Forward. I was so gutted.

Flash Forward. I was so gutted.

Me too. Had so much further to go.

And how cute was Dimitri?!!

lieselotte · 09/01/2023 18:29

Not RTFT so not sure if these have been mentioned, but the BBC cut Lilies and Zen way before their time.

And there was a sci-fi thing called Defying Gravity which needed its second series.

lieselotte · 09/01/2023 18:33

There was another thing called Trust which had Robson Greene in it, about a law firm. I quite liked that but it only had one short series. Had a decent cast with people like Sarah Parish in it.

Devious Maids, literally ended on a cliffhanger

I was absolutely wracking my brains to think of a series I recently watched with a big cliffhanger in the final series but ciikdnt remember and you've said it. I loved the series and couldn't believe it finished like that.

Also Single Parents, that just ended. There was supposed to be a S3 but it got cancelled. Apparently viewing figures were down but still higher than most shows so not sure why.

Just remembered Mapp and Lucia. Think it only lasted one series. It was a bit silly and fluffy, very 'gentle', but looked gorgeous (filmed in Rye) and the cast was terrific: Anna Chancellor, Miranda Richardson, Steve Pemberton, Mark Gatiss, Gemma Whelan, Paul Ritter (RIP), Joanna Scanlan...
I'd happily watch more.

I was thinking I didn't recognise that cast, and looked it up - there were two series of it, one in the 80s and one more recently.
Based on about 6 books written back in the 1920s/30s - I read a couple as a teenager (probably after seeing the series)

Yes, I wonder if the 80s one is worth watching in the absence of any more of the 2014 one.

SnowdroppersUnite · 10/01/2023 12:48

Paper Girls on prime was another.

Not amazing, but pretty entertaining and I enjoyed it. Left hanging and cancelled after one season.

I also like the returned, ringer, dollhouse and V and was mad when they were cancelled.
I watched a series about two twins, one rich, one poor and the rich girl convinced the poor one to stand in for her whilst she went off somewhere...and that's about all I remember but I enjoyed it and was sad that it was ended.
I did watch some crap about 10Plus years ago 😳

I didn't realise that Psychoville was cancelled too… I was never in to watch it when it was on, so I've bought the DVDs. Hell's bells. How shortsighted.

A couple of characters from psychoville turn up in Inside no 9 which is worth watching if you haven't seen it. Written by and starring the same people who wrote psychoville.
It's very clever and dark and an anthology series so you can start with any episode you fancy.

Also, it's just started series 8 and will finish after series 9. No random cancellation out of the blue!

Sounds like Ringer, which OP mentioned. It was a while back but I thought one had died? I'm probably confusing it with something else

ellebelli · 12/01/2023 09:31

I watched ringer and liked that.
No this was probably more of a teen series.
The actress had dark hair and looked like nina from TVD.
I remember the character wearing a playsuit which I found similar in river Island, bought for £40 and there it still hangs never worn! ☺️

Maggiesgirl · 12/01/2023 09:38

The Crimson Field. Loved it gutted it didn't have another series.

ellebelli · 12/01/2023 09:39
