There's still a lot of stigma around single mothers even now, I had my dd in 2006 on my own and had some awful comments said to me. Bearing in mind, I was 26yo so not a teenager!

Some mothers at the NCT groups wouldn't speak to me and a lot of women were very suspicious of me.

I like the Nancy and her daughter storyline but am not convinced by it at all. There would have been a lot more shame and judgement imo.

As an aside , have any of you done the Call the Midwife Tour at Chatham?
Me and my Mum and her friend went (as friend lives in Chatham) and it was fantastic
We only wanted the Tour but we could have seen the whole of the dockyard if we wanted too. There is a small hill they call "Chummy's Hill" as it featured in her learning to ride the bicycle.
The Guides are dressed as Midwives of the time too
I highly recommend

Sounds fabulous I’d love it.

Yes it was. Good memory!

I wish I could remember important stuff as well as I can random episodes of CTM! 😂

This one was made into a Church for the very very sad episode of the lady whose children all died in a Workhouse (the lady who is Madge in Benidorm played her) and they put headstones up and fake snow on the ground

I remember that episode, it was heartbreaking. The “workhouse howl” 😢

Really interesting to see behind the scenes, Trinity65, I’d certainly be happy to see more of your photos.

I don't remember that ever happening to me when I had mine in 1980. Before the birth I was asked if I was intending to keep the baby but it wasn't mentioned again in hospital. People might have talked about me behind my back but not to my face and I was never aware of it.

Katrinawaves · 09/02/2023 18:05

I was at school with a number of girls who got pregnant under the age of 16 between about 1983 and 1985. One had a shotgun marriage before the baby arrived and the other two kept their babies and brought them up as single young parents. Sadly all three did get a lot of gossip and stigma for their choices.

I myself was born in 1968 to a young mother whose parents forced her to give me up for adoption. She went on to marry my father when she was old enough to do so without parental consent.

Ooo the Guide got it wrong saying North London.

Seems it is here

The Manor House, Barrow Hills, Chertsey, Surrey.

Look at this -loads of photos from the set, seems to be one of those urban explorers sites. It’s all there- Nonnatus house outside and in, Violet’s shop, the surgery, the maternity home..
Midwife Manor

Fantastic photos
Makes such a difference how they use the lighting on the tripods too

This photo from my visit is the road they filmed the first episode on, with Jenny arriving in Poplar. I recall she broke up a fight with two very pregnant ladies and one was played by the actress who is now Karen in EastEnders. The fence to the right was where the black lady went into labour, on the stairs, in the episode where the white neighbour helped her to give birth, despite her prior prejudice.

Lovely seeing these.

Trinity65 · 10/02/2023 22:14

These last ones are just in General at the Dockyard apart from the ship front.

That was that rather disturbing early episode of the Dutch girl who gave birth and she was there to satisfy the needs of the sailors and her Father was the Captain. I think she was Dutch. Series 1 I think so a long time ago

The Lucille/ Cyril story is ridiculous. She'd never have abandoned him.
