Being brought up by a grandmother that you thought was your mum wasn’t that uncommon. I had a couple of friends who found out the truth about their big sister.

Generally the pregnant daughter would be sent away as soon as the mother found out. The mother then claimed a last minute surprise baby and the daughter came back home.

OttersMayHaveShiftedInTransit · 07/02/2023 23:10

My great grandmother raised one of her older daughters wartime baby as the youngest 'sister' in the family but as great grandad had died in the early 1930s it certainly wasn't a pretence that would fool the neighbours. It was an arrangement that left the babies mum free to get on with life without the stigma of being an unmarried mother but her daughter always knew that her big sister was her biological mother.

Crumpetdisappointment · 08/02/2023 05:43

a girl who i went to school with whose mum was quite old, as was her sister, , i assumed her sister was actually her mother.

TennisWithDeborah · 08/02/2023 20:44

An interesting episode. It was so much better than forced adoption, which would have been the fate of baby Keeley if her grandparents had not done the right thing by her mother. What a cruel thing that was.

I am rewatching some old episodes and think I just came across a peak Nurse Crane line:

'Now, young lady, are you decent under that frou-frou house coat?'

Grin
CaptainMyCaptain · 09/02/2023 11:00

Love it!

blobby10 · 09/02/2023 12:16

@lifeissweet I too am rewatching the earlier series and watched that episode on Tuesday! Nurse Crane has always been awesome but I still remember the hurt on her face after she had asked the younger girls for a ticket to the Square Dance, left the room and heard them laughing. Sad I'm watching the episodes where Delia is living in NH and wonder if Sister Julienne actually realised that Delia and Patsy were in love?

Was that the episode with the young diabetic girl?

lifeissweet · 09/02/2023 12:35

Yes it was. Good memory!

As an aside , have any of you done the Call the Midwife Tour at Chatham?
Me and my Mum and her friend went (as friend lives in Chatham) and it was fantastic
We only wanted the Tour but we could have seen the whole of the dockyard if we wanted too. There is a small hill they call "Chummy's Hill" as it featured in her learning to ride the bicycle.
The Guides are dressed as Midwives of the time too
I highly recommend

Chummy's Hill

Call the Midwife.
Trinity65 · 09/02/2023 14:03

This one was made into a Church for the very very sad episode of the lady whose children all died in a Workhouse (the lady who is Madge in Benidorm played her) and they put headstones up and fake snow on the ground

Call the Midwife.
Trinity65 · 09/02/2023 14:04

Last one for now but I can share more if anyone is interested
This was the episode .

Is there the exterior of Nonnatus house and the arch, or are those on a film set?

Nonnatus House is a set and, ironically, is in North London.

Johnnysgirl · 09/02/2023 14:20

Oh, I'd love that!

The lady we went with and her daughter had originally got Mum and Me reservations for a Spa Afternoon and they would have joined us.
Covid happened and during that time we all decided we would much rather a Tour of the Set so we done this.

Is there a lit of walking on the tour? My mum would love it but can't walk far.

Yes there is a fair bit
My Mum done ok even though she had a knee problem at the time (since had an operation) and another chap was waiting for a hip replacement . They just waited for them to catch up before continuing the Tour. We went in October as well which was probably not the best Time to go.

Trinity65 · 09/02/2023 15:07

Weather wise that is. Was rather cold.

PuttingDownRoots · 09/02/2023 15:09

Was the ground even and were there lots of steps? (Its a mixture of eyesight and mobility)

No steps that I recall and most was even. We didn't go up Chummy's Hill but took photos from the bottom That was rather uneven.
