Sublime. From beginning to end. Absolutely sublime. Joyous.

I found it so difficult to watch, it was unbearable and cringy.

If it was a young girl people here would be moaning about how women are told to 'be kind'.

I thi k people are forgetting a lot of young kids watched this.

All they see is a boy who is lost and meets a few mates.

He says he wants to go home but then he doesn't.

They aren't going to get the subtleties, they aren't going to see that the storm is a metaphor for something else. Or think tgat the animals are anything other than animals hes met on his journey

So for my daughter he didnt go home.

And another question- was the mole wearing clothes?

Looked like he was wearing a jumper.

Exactly, it wont make sense to children at all.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 25/12/2022 11:04

Have to say it jumped the shark a bit when the horse said 'There's something I haven't told you.' Was all ready for an oh shit moment and then it's 'I can FLY!' and I'm expecting the boy to fall off with all those loops and swoops.

Clearly I'm not the target audience.

BMFH · 25/12/2022 11:32

I liked it, I thought the ending was good. I probably misunderstand it but I thought that the mole and the fox and the horse represented different parts of himself

The mole - softer, thoughtful (slow to make decisions) , kind, playful
The fox - angry when pushed, but kind underneath
The horse - providing shelter, strength, magic

And at the end, when he saw that house with the lights on he knew he would have to leave the mole and the horse and the fox behind if he wanted to go there... so that's how we know it was the wrong decision. Anywhere that life takes you that you have to leave part of yourself behind is a wrong choice - no matter how good it looks on the outside!

(I also thought the cake shop the mole talked of represented social media? It looks good but you can't live there!)

I am probably overthinking! Merry Christmas everyone!

Sparklefoof · 25/12/2022 11:49

I was not emotionally ready for it at 9am this morning. I thought it was absolutely beautiful, even DH looked a bit teary.

Mossstitch · 25/12/2022 11:57

Wow, people on here have far more insight than I do, I've learnt a few things👍
I love the book, got the t-shirt but I too was worrying about him being cold and whether his mother was frantically looking for him😢 or how he could stay on a flying horse when he'd already fallen off when it jumped over the stream🤷 I'm obviously too much of a literal/practical person😂

LubaLuca · 25/12/2022 12:01

I'm not familiar with the book and I was expecting a story. I loved the animation, but I found the allegory mawkish so I lost interest. I wouldn't watch it again, definitely not a new classic for us.

I think that's my problem as well. 😂

swedex · 25/12/2022 12:06

It was just one insta quote after another I like the images and quotes on their own but one after the other for half an hour is a bit too much!

MassiveSalad22 · 25/12/2022 12:06

I’m refusing to watch this as I’ve followed him on insta and got absolutely saturated with the saccharine tweeness of it very quickly and now I hate it 😄

Trandafire · 25/12/2022 12:13

I had never heard of the book either. My 4yo found it scary, we had to turn off for a bit when the fox was introduced. I just found it mawkish and pretty dull if I'm honest. Visually stunning but am sticking with the snowman.

Stellaris22 · 25/12/2022 12:34

I find it odd that people get annoyed at 'be kind' when aimed at women, but this message aimed at a little boy is ok.

DelilahBucket · 25/12/2022 12:38

You either get it or you don't. It isn't really for children, it's for adults, just like the book. Left me in tears after a very stressful month.

It's not that people aren't 'getting it', it's not misunderstanding. Lots of people don't enjoy these sorts of quasi-profound statements that you see all over social media.

That's just it though, there's more to it than the quotes. It's quite obvious from a lot of the responses here that people don't understand all the voices belong to the boy, and it isn't that he's not got a home etc.

JustCakeInDrag · 25/12/2022 13:09

You can ‘get it‘ and still dislike it Smile

jamoncrumpets · 25/12/2022 13:17

I get what it's trying to do. Too schmaltzy for me.

Oh I got it. I just thought it was shite.

You can understand the symbolism and the messages and still think that it wasnt very good

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 25/12/2022 13:25

I'm assuming he was between life and death and was reflecting over what he had learnt in life. The flying horse was an angel maybe...

It wasn't meant to be set in the real world otherwise yes he'd have hypothermia and a team of police out looking for him.

I enjoyed it but yy to one of the animals being female would have been nice.

Stellaris22 · 25/12/2022 13:29

Loving how MN would be up in arms about a girl being 'be kind' but ignoring that with this.

saraclara · 25/12/2022 13:38

I've seen the trailers and seen the Instas, and I'm afraid you couldn't pay me to watch it.

I love the way that those who did and hated it are being accused of 'not getting it'. It is possible not to like this kind of tweed sentimental stuff even if you do get what the writer intends. Tastes can still differ.

saraclara · 25/12/2022 13:38

Tweed? Twee

Trandafire · 25/12/2022 13:39

It was certainly being marketed as 'family viewing', I assumed it was for kids!

saraclara · 25/12/2022 13:40

On the other hand, I have just cried at the second half of Tom Minchin's White Wine in the Sun. Again. I'm not entirely without soul.
