Sublime. From beginning to end. Absolutely sublime. Joyous.

I didn't really get it. Every line of dialogue was like some mawkish Instagram caption.

The animation was pretty.

You dont need to get anything.

You watched it and that is enough. Just know that you are loved.

That is exactly how the book was written - as a series of drawings and captions on instagram.

IfCanCanICan · 25/12/2022 00:07

Me and DS9 loved it. He declared we have to watch it every Christmas Eve now, along with The Snowman of course. We really need to add something more cheery...

keeprunning55 · 25/12/2022 00:55

It was beautiful. Simply beautiful.

Glassofwhatever · 25/12/2022 00:58

It was very beautiful and simple. What a talent

I actually quite liked that it was 4 male voices. As a mum of boys it was nice to hear males talking about feelings and crying even if they were fictional cartoon animals.

Exactly how I felt too. I loved it.

theboss1970 · 25/12/2022 08:57

I'm going to stick my neck out but that was soulless. I absolutely love the book, from cover to cover, the magical drawings, the perfect words...
Charlie is a genius.

Unfortunately this film was not genius. it didn't leave me with that joy in my heart that the book does. it's what happens when too many people work on a project and somewhere along the way the soul of the book disappeared and we were left with lovely animation but words that failed to have the impact the book has.

I shall continue to love my book and buy it for friends if there's anyone left who doesn't have a copy but I'm not going to watch the film again. the sooner I forget about it the sooner i can immerse myself in the book and let its magic embrace me.

jaundicedoutlook · 25/12/2022 09:29

Genuinely couldn’t have hated this more. Cheesy cod philosophy / well-being quotes, badly animated, and the boy had wanky emo hair.

the80sweregreat · 25/12/2022 09:35

I did like it's I even shed a tear, but I agree it lacked something that ' the snowman' has in spades
The horse animation was fab

Thank goodness. I was berating myself for being a hardened old cynic but 20 minutes in all I could think was 'why's he lost? why is no-one looking for him? he's been in those woods 2 days now and he'd be dead of hypothermia.'* I didn't hate it and I admit to a few tears but do not get all the plaudits for this.

*Yes, I do get that the wood and the bad weather is a metaphor for loneliness and isolation.

Notsurenotquiteright · 25/12/2022 09:54

But all the voices are his inside voices?
isnt it about depression and finding your self worth and knowing you deserve to live?
mayve I watched it from a different perspective but I understood it to be the the little boy (maybe not a boy when alive maybe a grown man) is in the in between of life and death and doesn’t have anything pulling him back to life.
they head towards the light at the end and have the whole conversation about not killing yourself.

beautifully animated but quite sad

hattie43 · 25/12/2022 10:03

I've just watched this . Never seen anything more beautiful and the voices of each character, perfect .

sashagabadon · 25/12/2022 10:11

I thought it was meh. I watched the making of it show beforehand and thought the whole thing seemed a painful process that took itself much too seriously. Charlie is clearly talented but he seems very hard work as a person!
i would have preferred the boy to return home to his family rather than just spending the rest of his life being depressed and cold and wandering about the countryside. Presumably he has parents?! How did he get lost and why wasn’t anyone looking for him?
I have listened to the book on audio book and did enjoy it ( and maybe that is enough 😁)

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 25/12/2022 10:31

Illustrations were beautiful, sweet but very woke imho.

The boy definitely should have gone home.

It would have made him feel better

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 25/12/2022 10:40

@sashagabadon I tuned out of the programme about the making of the film after about 30 minutes; which is how long it should have been. I'm sure Mackesy is a lovely man, and I do like his book, but this was so drawn out.

Simonjt · 25/12/2022 10:40

toksvig · 24/12/2022 21:45

But why 4 male voices, unnecessarily?

All the voices in the book belong to the little boy, they’re his inner strength and selfworth developing.

CraigDavid · 25/12/2022 10:45

I was disappointed. Loved the illustrations but found the story like a weird self help book come to life. For people who have inspirational quotes on their wall.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 25/12/2022 10:48

For people who have inspirational quotes on their wall

That was how I felt by the end.

sashagabadon · 25/12/2022 10:48

The making of it programme was interesting. Seemed to involve multiple zoom meetings with hundreds of artists (too many?) and Richard Curtis trying to suggest he was the inspiration behind it all as he came up with the i’m lost opener and Charlie looking earnest and tearful. I got the impression they must have spent days discussing what colour trousers the boy should wear.
and the female director or producer saying at least twice what a challenging project it was and it took 2 years and bearing in mind it’s a half hour show that is mind boggling. Maybe it was the zooming that slowed it down

dexterslockedintheshedagain · 25/12/2022 10:51

The boy definitely should have gone home.

But he did go home - at the end, he says 'home is not a place' implying home is when you're with people you love, and you're happy. Then, home can be ANYWHERE and when they were all cwtched up together at the end, he WAS home.

bellac11 · 25/12/2022 10:51

Oh dear, I thought it was awful, full of cheesy phrasing and an odd ending. I wasnt quite sure why there was an hour long special on the author either, never heard of him, never heard of this so why I needed to hear all about his life I dont know

The interesting thing was that the snowman and snowdog were on at a similar time and they really are magical and heart rending.

AceofPentacles · 25/12/2022 10:57

Sorry, I found it embarrassingly cheesy and badly done. Also waaayyy too long. Definitely not the Christmas classic they clearly hoped it would be.

I thi k people are forgetting a lot of young kids watched this.

All they see is a boy who is lost and meets a few mates.

He says he wants to go home but then he doesn't.

They aren't going to get the subtleties, they aren't going to see that the storm is a metaphor for something else. Or think tgat the animals are anything other than animals hes met on his journey

So for my daughter he didnt go home.

And another question- was the mole wearing clothes?

Looked like he was wearing a jumper.
