Sublime. From beginning to end. Absolutely sublime. Joyous.

IfCanCanICan Tales of Beatrix Potter, The Tailor of Gloucester is a lovely Christmas story.

Despite my innate cynicism I have always tried not to sneer at the book, because several people I really love and respect have told me that it has helped them in difficult times. I therefore watched it with an open mind but my God, what a lot of trite nonsense. I ‘got’ it and I really, really disliked it.

I wasn't sold on it either. Neither was DH.
Both kids sobbed through it though.
So didn't really hit the mark in our house.

So glad I found this thread after only reading rave reviews elsewhere. DS, DH and I just watched it and after 5 minutes we started playing ‘Inspirational quote bingo’. Whatever happened to showing rather than telling? ( On the positive side, it did lead to a funny half an hour afterwards where we attempted to continue the tone while tidying the house for the night)
‘The Christmas tree lights are switched off, but they’re still alight in my heart’
’I am loading the dishwasher with the burdens of the day and in the morning they will be washed clean’
‘ Although I shut the kitchen door, the door in my soul is always open to you’

Haha we were doing this too!

'The marks on this table cloth are not stains. They are little illustrations to remind us of the food we shared together."
"I'm going to the loo but remember that no-one is ever lonely when you have a tv remote in your hands."
"This Lego is building a bridge from your imagination to mine."
Etc.

Labelle - brilliant quotes, so profound.

someone gave us the book having gone on about how amazing it was and we thought it was ridiculous; trite quotes, stupid ink splodges and carefully drawn on coffee cup rings - wtf? Actually we did think it is clever - clever marketing and and a clever idea for a basically lazy book that would sell in quantity and appeal to people who like inspirational quotes and shallow thinking. We took in turns to read the quotes in wise and serious voices while getting more annoyed with each page. Won’t be watching.

Sashamia · 28/12/2022 10:31

I think they are trying to sell it as a newage Little Prince or Christopher Robin. I guess it won't be long before we have musicals and plays and school productions.

BedTaker · 28/12/2022 10:58

I didn't watch this, but having looked it up I recognise it - its those quotes posted on FB by people who usually are neither kind nor deep in any way and yes, have Live, Laugh, Love cushions etc

I never really took much notice of them, and assumed they were to do with Winnie the Pooh or something, but I recognise that handwriting script.

Don't think I will bother watching it, I don't think it's my cup of tea!

Heyjoewhatsup · 28/12/2022 13:26

I’m torn. I loved the animation and grateful that my children are being taught some fundamental truths from the stoics, that we have forgotten as a society. However, it felt like an extended John Lewis advert, was too direct and dictatorial/ preachy.

But I’m glad it exists because I’m sure some people will benefit from hearing some of these messages and I’m glad it’s now in the mainstream. But it needs to be more fun to appeal to my kids, they were mainly bored and didn’t really get the key messages. So I think this is really for adults.

I do find all the nepotism involved fascinating. Richard Curtis is a neighbour friend, he’s best mates with Bear Grylls, it was produced by Matthew Freud who is Curtis’ brother in law (via Emma Freud), descendant of Sigmund Freud, ex husband of Rupert Murdoch’s daughter, part of the Chipping Norton set. When I saw Phoebe Wallis Bridge’s sister was involved (music), that made me think would this ever have seen the light of day if he was a writer from a council estate background? Would he have got the leg up on social media if he wasn’t connected to the powerful social elite?

He seemed like quite a sad soul in the creator programme, I’d worry how he will cope with the attention and being the focus of so many fans looking to him as a guru. I wish him well as he seems like a lovely person who really does feel human emotions deeply.

Heyjoewhatsup · 28/12/2022 13:27

*Phoebe Waller-Bridge

Heyjoewhatsup · 28/12/2022 13:30

The poster above hit the nail on the head with “whatever happened to show don’t tell?” That’s exactly the issue I have with it and why I can’t love, although I really wanted to.

arghtriffid · 28/12/2022 13:32

You dont need to get anything.

You watched it and that is enough. Just know that you are loved.

Lol 😂

It's all like this. Nepo babies everywhere.

arghtriffid · 28/12/2022 13:37

Animation truly beautiful. The rest mawkish twaddle and that is a shame.

It would have been better set to music with no words like 'The Snowman'.

ouch321 · 28/12/2022 13:37

It wasn't my cup of tea.

And it can never live up to the Snowman. That's a beautiful piece of television.

Heyjoewhatsup · 28/12/2022 15:26

@jamoncrumpets yeah you’re right. ‘‘Twas always thus, but it’s getting worse. Just look at British actors these days, so much privilege. Julie Walters commented that her and Victoria Wood wouldn’t have made it in the current environment as it’s so impenetrable.

the80sweregreat · 28/12/2022 16:10

Showbiz has always thrived on nepotism.
For someone to break out from a less connected background has always been difficult . These days it's even worse I think
It's the same where I work , not what you know, but who

Whyisitsodifficult · 24/12/2022 22:47

I’ve not read the book and if I’m honest didn’t really ‘get’ it!?

Same here! As far as I could tell it was a group of animals (mainly that annoying bloody mole) spouting platitudes at each other. And the fox had low self esteem, so he had a platitude thrown at him to fix it.

AreOttersJustWetCats · 28/12/2022 16:19

Rowthe · 24/12/2022 22:54

Its basically a book of quotes.

It's like ' live, love laugh' for the instagram generation.

In the book one of them will talk about their insecurities and another says something to make them feel better.

Yes!

My husband is in that world, but has no family connections. Just hard graft. He's surrounded by kids of writers, actors, producers and artists.

TheIsaacs · 26/12/2022 13:51

Exactly what I assumed it was about too. He’s in some sort of limbo or dying and they’re all there to guide him “home” to life but he stays with them instead.

I read it was based on Charlie Mackesy's journey through life, and he's not dead, so it can't be that.

Oblomov22 · 30/12/2022 09:08

@CircleofWillis

"not stains. They are little illustrations to remind us of the food we shared together."

That really made me laugh. I came downstairs. I laughed again. Xmas Grin

smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 01/01/2023 16:19

Ive just watched this with DD aged 5 and thought it was dreadful. The twee platitudes just went over her head and she started asking me about 10mins in if she could play with the nintendo switch. The whole thing just reminded me of when DD2 died and people would say things like "everything happens for a reason" or "just look at the stars and she will be there"

I also wasnt particularly struck by the animation either it was all just very boring.

Noluthando · 01/01/2023 20:25

I just watched it having no knowledge of it beforehand except had seen a few Facebook memes of it. I thought it was just a series of inspirational quotes and fairly boring. It also made me feel really cold ! The bit where the horse said he could fly, we all burst out laughing!

Doingmybest12 · 02/01/2023 13:56

Also the bit where the horse was excluded by other horses for being able to fly and the boy says he would feel the same about the horse if he can fly or not. If horses or anything else could fly that would be brilliant, don't think you'd be ostracised for that ,just made no sense to me.

beautiful but not sure about the ending
i was following the artist in 2020 - he was inspiring

But why 4 male voices, unnecessarily?

Had the same thought. Was watching it with 4 students yesterday. One said I think the fox will be female but no, they were all male. I was glad the student had thought about that though.
