As one officer said, "it's a juicy one"

@UniversalAunt I should have made it clear that this guy was convicted of causing death by dangerous driving. I've looked at the sentencing guidelines now and the minimum sentence is two years custody, with reduction for pleading guilty. I don't know the details of my friend's case but presumably he was released after time on remand with the usual deduction in time served. I know he walked out of the court on the day he was found guilty. Two years for ending someone's life is a similar sentence to the one handed down in this case.

DingDangMerrily · 06/12/2022 19:30

If he walked from court, had he been kept in custody and had that time deducted from his sentence?

Finallybreathingout · 06/12/2022 19:50

I assume it was that, plus the custodial sentence reduction for good behaviour maybe?

I only know that her friends all got the same heartbroken email from her widower whose police family liaison officer hadn’t told him there was a possibility that the man who killed his wife would walk free that day.

I would like to see the police in plain clothes wearing something more smart. Something that commands a bit more respect and knock off all the mating. Agree on the boundaries.

Completely agree, and no gum chewing!

We had a teenager at work, a few years ago, who suffered life changing injuries, in a hit an run. The culprit got 8 months and the victim was still in hospital when he was released. How he even survived is a miracle.

The mate calling him a nonce. I think that was just lad talk. He didn't know about the rape then. I don't think he knew about him grooming young girls as they were chatting ok until he heard what he had been arrested for.

Tirrrrred · 06/12/2022 20:58

Why are the mums allowing a man to take their 15 year olds phone number though.

Very deceitfully getting in with the mums.

There’s a very fine line between “commanding respect” and being relatable so that criminals are more receptive to them…I totally agree about the gum though, he was like a cow chewing the cud…but suited and booted would be totally counter productive…these low lives generally don’t respect themselves so they’re not going to respect someone dressed like you suggest, it would drive an even bigger wedge. It’s why police forces have generally relaxed their policies on visible tattoos on hands and arms-makes cops more relatable

abcdefghijkml · 06/12/2022 21:47

Have the police becoming more relatable helped lower crime? I don't think so.

stillvicarinatutu · 06/12/2022 23:50

Watching and this is why I can't do that work in that area now .

Guy walks up to 15 year old I. Street and her mum is with her .
Go mum .

It's all so fucking abnormal. Bruv. I just haven't got the patience anymore .

Peasepuddingbloodycold · 06/12/2022 16:44

Yes, and I don’t know why they don’t say “I’m not your mate. You call me PC…”

Even as a teacher, dealing with teens in trouble I’d say the equivalent. In fact, as a teacher I was struck by how we got more respect from students than visiting PCs and PCSO. I don’t think teens want more “mates”. They want adults with boundaries.

Because the job requires getting the most information possible- so the job is being "the mate" - that's why the best detectives get the info - they are the suspects mate and get them to trust them and divulge everything. It's a way to interview. I've done it . I've done it with sex offenders - if they trust you they spill . Being standoffish and pc x doesn't get results. It sticks in the craw . Its shit . It gives you ptsd. But it works .

sad but true.

I think diffusing tension and being matey is really sensible in a situation where people are liable to kick off or harm themselves etc post arrest. Expecting respect won't work for a lot of career criminals surely, and will just cause more hassle. Better to just get people through the system with as little trouble as possible.

He did know what type of person he was those. I suspect his reputation went before him. The mate was even telling him that 'nonces' now go on the main wing which was the only time Kye looked vaguely concerned. The mate also told him he should get a 'proper girlfriend' so I suspect he was well known in his area and wouldn't surprrise me if he was the sort to boast about it.

Tirrrrred · 07/12/2022 09:53

What I was commenting on was the "nonce"

If someone had called you that you wouldn't happily chat away with them would you?

So who was the gf? Not the 15 year old? I'm so confused who was the gf and who was the victim?

That was my take on it too. He didn't care when he was referred to as a "nonce" by his mate because it's all part of the game to them. It's not serious, it's not a problem. Preying on 17, 16 and yeah the odd 15 year old is seen as fair game cos these girls don't deserve anything better.

Tirrrrred · 07/12/2022 10:04

So the girl who's face is shown is the ex girlfriend.

The Scottish girl is the 15 year old?

Yes.

The girl we could see said early on in the programme 'he never did that to me' intimating she didn't know what he was like as he'd never done anything like that to her

CosmopolitanPlease · 07/12/2022 10:54

The girl whose face we could see had her appearance and voice altered through AI, apparently, which is the first time I can remember seeing it used in a program like this. If you watch carefully you can see her features moving and blurring slightly. Amazing use of technology as it made the victim more relatable and real (as opposed to a totally pixelated face and obviously disguised voice) whilst protecting her identity.

Tirrrrred · 07/12/2022 10:58

I've re watched. It have been obvious to some but I thought they could have mentioned it.

Are people assuming they did that or is it definite? It does look slightly unusual.

Peasepuddingbloodycold · 07/12/2022 11:08

I found it odd and distracting I’m afraid. I wish they’d explained at the start.

purpleme12 · 07/12/2022 11:18

I completely never noticed this AI!
Looked really real to me!

purpleme12 · 07/12/2022 11:19

(same for the the sound of her voice)

CosmopolitanPlease · 07/12/2022 11:54

I'm just assuming really, based on the announcement about the victims' identities being disguised, the oddly high voice and blurry symmetrical face, and comments I read on Twitter. The girl's face is like those deepfakes where Keanu Reeves is superimposed on other people.

At the end credits they said that some of the appearances had been altered to protect identities
