Think they should all go home. And enjoy baking nice things instead.

Would also be so happy to see Benoit as a main BO judge. (Actually I'd be very happy to see more Benoit generally).

Oh, yes!

<fans self>

Tbh the move to Channel 4 was when it all started to go wrong.

TBH, Paul has never been right . . .

ArcaneWireless · 16/11/2022 11:21

I’m a tiny bit fond of Benoit.

PH? Not so much.

He’s been eating from the snark trough.

Croque · 16/11/2022 11:28

As much as I love Benoit, to me he is more of a specialist patissier. They just need a jolly all-rounder who does not take himself too seriously and think he is bigger than the show.

My disgust at Paul peaked when he made those comments to Dawn about her resembling his mum and actually called her "mum". She rightly pointed out that she was pretty much the same age as him but this should never have happened a)on a baking show b) in 2022. I cannot stand the way he silently stalks around with that intense, bullying stare.

ArcaneWireless · 16/11/2022 11:32

Benoit could lay carpets for a living and still be a better fit than PH. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I missed that croque - what an arse.

MissyB1 · 16/11/2022 12:08

@Croque when Paul did that ds actually looked at me in horror, he knew I was going to freak out! 😂

I am surprised that he pretty much got away with it. Presenters have lost jobs for much less than that!

Madeintowerhamlets · 16/11/2022 12:14

I agree with everything that’s been said. What a flat & lacklustre final! I was happy that Syabira won but agree that the standard fell short of previous years.
I don’t have any strong feelings about Prue but agree that Paul needs to go. I don’t mind Noel but I find Matt Lucas so unfunny- I hate all those silly voices he does. My ideal presenters would be Miranda Hart & her on screen mum Patricia Hodge. I think they’d be perfect!

Hobnobswantshernameback · 16/11/2022 12:17

Loads of negative comments and press on twitter
much like we are all saying here
no idea why the production team thought this was the direction that people wanted the programme to go
hoping they will listen be realise why people used to love bake-off before they kill it off completely

It was never resolved whether Sandro should actually have been on Bake Off: The Professionals instead. He was retained as this year's eye candy 😀

The result was unfair: In the finals alone, Abdul performed best this year just as Chigs had performed best last year. It is convenient how PH is prepared to go on record to say 'It is only about the performance on the day, never mind how well you did previously' as he did with Hermione but change it to 'She was the strongest throughout the series' as he did here.

But honestly, they were all dreadful for a final yesterday, so I don't see how they could do anything but go on their performance across the series. None of the signature round got resounding praise. None of them turned out a good technical (and the fact that neither Sybira or Abdul's were great despite knowing how to use the vegetarian gelatine just makes you realise they simply weren't given enough time). All the showstoppers looked awful. What a shame for the bakers.

Halsall · 16/11/2022 13:14

I didn’t bother watching live, partly as Masterchef clashed with it, but I forgot to record it too and when I realised, I couldn’t even be bothered to stick it on +1.

Its been dull, dull, dull. Sybira was the right one to win (I definitely didn’t want Sandro, or Nelson, or whatever he’s actually called, to get it), but none of them excelled in that final and the ultimate challenge was tediously over-ambitious.

Clymene · 16/11/2022 13:56

That technical was ridiculous. They weren't given enough time for the whatever it was called layer to set in the middle.

I hope no one writes in to be on the show next year.

LadyEloise1 · 16/11/2022 13:56

Janusz should have been in the final.
Maxy too.

Fizbosshoes · 16/11/2022 14:12

But late here. We watched last night but I couldn't find the thread!
Probably already been said but I was ready to throw a shoe at the TV when Paul said Abduls technical (iirc) would have been great if it had an extra 20 min setting time.
BUT THEY SET THE TIME LIMITS!!! (or at least approve them) It's not as if he forgot or mis-used the time, there wasn't enough time. For any of it.
All the things would be improved if they had enough time!

I did think Sandro came a bit unstuck with all his "extra" things. He could have spent longer on the required elements, and made them neater. And what was the rolls on the cake all about??

It is clear that both Matt and Noel are just a nuisance when talking to the contestants and I've said before disinterested and at times, quite disdainful about the food! (And not remotely funny!!) Matt said he didn't like something (fairly standard) yesterday and said he had the palate of a young child. How does that make him a good fit for a cookery show?

They could explore specialities from around the British Isles - different counties and regions have dishes unique to their region. I think it has been done before but I think it would be interesting. I don't think its compulsory to have a new completely impossible task each series.

AnImaginaryCat · 16/11/2022 14:23

Yes I thought that about Paul's comment about it being great apart from the timings. Ridiculous. In fact felt the timings in the final were even more restrictive.

I don't mind Pru, always feel like she's trying to make up for Paul's random dislike of certain contestants. Making postive comments where possible.

Actually warmed to Sandro yesterday. The difficulty with the 'trick' of the gelatin and taking on too much caused him to lose the cock-sure smugness and made him a lot more likable.

Cuck00soup · 16/11/2022 16:43

I'm guessing that actually Pru & Paul don't set the time limits or even "their" specialist technicals. It's probably as big a surprise to them as the contestants when they read the autocue.

Never going to happen but I would so love PH to have to do one of his so called specialist technicals in the time available.

Croque · 16/11/2022 16:45

Apparently, the young woman who was shacked up with him said that he lived on cheap, sliced white from Tesco.

Me too. Timing is such a big deal I think we should be SHOWN the bake can be done to a high standard in the time allowed.

Katyaadlerscoat · 16/11/2022 18:19

Saw PH interviewed recently. He said he last baked "er, last week" and made "blueberry muffins, and they were delicious". Great that he's keeping his expert hand in.

RosettaStormer · 16/11/2022 19:08

I see PH is now engaged to his landlady girlfriend.

DOesn't surprise me.

I bought some of his "bake them yourself" buns.

They weren't very nice at all.

longtompot · 17/11/2022 12:14

I would like to see Pru as lead judge. She has far more baking experience than PH and is a much fairer judge.
I think they also only need one celeb to chat to the contestants, like with Harry Hill on Junior GBBO. It was interesting how PH was with the kids on that show, much more encouraging. I wonder if he forgets the contestants on GBBO are in fact enthusiasts rather that professional bakers and expects far more of them than they can deliver.
They need to change the format for the next series, starting with giving the essential info on the recipes for the technical. Not everyone would have used vegetarian gelatine and it was mean to not say how it should be used. It was the same for the spring roll wrapper recipe and the dip. Setting people up to fail.
