Tried watching the US version because I love Ghosts so much - kept saying to DH let's just give it a bit longer, but nope, didn't enjoy it at all. Wonder how we'd have felt if we'd seen the US version first?

It was clunky - too much 'explaining', no subtlety.

NewsnightThumbs · 20/11/2022 09:58

We watched the first two and it was okay, but felt kind of flat to me in comparison to “our” Ghosts.

Everything being squished into 20-minute episodes doesn’t help. The pace feels weirdly samey and the cast doesn’t feel like a genuine ensemble yet. I know it might improve though, and we will keep trying with it a little longer.

And the banter is a bit clunky, I thought? At one point Hetty told someone to “shut up!” and the rhythm of it suggested that was supposed to be a little bit funny in itself, but it just felt a bit “meh, will this do” in script terms. Like a missed opportunity for something slightly better.

SequinsandStilettos · 20/11/2022 21:12

Seen the first six now. I might have to make every time the couple call each other "babe" into a drinking game Grin
I don't hate it, but I am having to see it as its own thing as it doesn't hold a candle to the original. I wanted it to do well so the original cast as exec producers get some $. It lacks some of the charm, subtlety and nuance of the original though, especially the Captain. That's not to say I haven't laughed - there have been a couple of lines that made me laugh out loud - just not as many as the original.

MoirasSaggyBundles · 20/11/2022 21:38

We've watched 5 episodes of the US version and will watch no more. It lacks the charm and heart of the original.

TheElementsSong · 21/11/2022 08:22

We watched the first episode of US Ghosts and teen DDS declared it was "rubbish" and wouldn't watch the rest. I haven't decided if I'll try to watch a few more episodes by myself.

Agree that it lacked the subtle and clever humour of the BBC version. The thing that really annoyed us was the way everything was S-P-E-L-L-E-D O-U-T C-L-E-A-R-L-Y like the audience were utter idiots.

For example:

  • Ghosts declaring how they died in detail, repeatedly, and reminding us how painful it was.
  • The smelly dysentry thing, where everybody had to go on at length about the smell.
  • Worst of all, the "What is hotel?" where the BBC version left it to the audience to understand why Robin would say "Kill them." which made it so effectively funny. But the US version had to show all the terrible hotel scenarios in slapstick detail.
PuttingDownRoots · 21/11/2022 08:30

Its crude. Why did we need the trouserless detail for example.

LadyFannyButton · 21/11/2022 10:47

The trouserless detail is because he is the sleezy politician. He died having sex with his mistress.
All the ghosts are dressed as they were when they died.

VanGoghsDog · 21/11/2022 11:53

It's like if you ordered Ghosts off Wish!

PigLightingBastard · 21/11/2022 11:57

I quite liked the "put your arms down!" trousers moment as sometimes it's obvious our Julian must have his shirt tails glued to his legs otherwise he'd constantly be flashing. The US version addressed the elephant in the room immediately.

It was having the pixilated genitals that summed up the lack of subtlety for me.
Someone saying "Put your arms down!" without seeing it would have been much funnier because the viewer has to make the link and create the image themselves.
I'm not sure I'll watch anymore.

LosingTheWill2022 · 21/11/2022 21:33

Obviously I don't think any real genitals were pixilated!

PuttingDownRoots · 21/11/2022 21:33

I always imagined Julian had pants on. But... we told our 9yo Julian died getting ready for bed.

SequinsandStilettos · 21/11/2022 23:23

I have now finished all 18 episodes. I really got into it by the end and actually fell for them all in their own right. The Hamilton running gag was good. Trevor's back story was a decent episode. Colour me shocked and emotional, but I found certain scenes in the prom episode and last episode unexpectedly moving.
Won't be able to convince you all I'm sure, and that's okay, but I think it has legs.
Bingeing probably has a cumulative effect that stand alones don't. As you were x

PigLightingBastard · 22/11/2022 10:09

I have also finished the lot. It's not a patch on the original - no fanny puns, for example - and can get a bit laboured with explanations and over acting. But it did have some things I liked - randomly popping up ghosts, the going down puns. I'd just rather have 18 more UK episodes anyday.

mogtheexcellent · 22/11/2022 10:45

Just finished watching them all. Its not as subtle as the UK version and I hate all the bright colours, house didnt look run down at all although I did spot some halloween style web stuff to make it look older in one episode. It was good to see some interaction between Sam and ghosts outside of the house ghosts.

Sam is Princess Amber in A Christmas Prince, shes ok. I found Jay really annoying. Petes accent is grating as was his fake girlfriend from the basement. Trevors death story was really well done. Hetty not uptight enough. I think they gave too many deaths away so there wasnt enough mystery. The neightbours not as infuriating as Barclay Beg-Chetwynde.

Still it was better than some US versions of things and its quite nice that our UK version is much better. Take that US!

Mochudubh · 23/11/2022 18:29

DH and I binged the first 6 yesterday. We quite enjoyed it and will watch the rest. It's definitely a bit laboured with the spelling out of some gags. I didn't like the way they handled Pete's death and subsequent visit by his widow. It felt heavy handed compared Pat's story which was really touching.

There were enough funny moments to keep me interested for now, I like the Native American and the singer who seem to be more original characters rather than based on the British version.

It took me a while to twig where I had seen Sam before, then I realised she'd been in I Zombie and was Tinkerbell in Once Upon a Time.

longtompot · 24/11/2022 11:05

I watched one episode of the American version and I really didn't like it. Good news there are two more UK series in the offing plus a Christmas episode! www.comedy.co.uk/tv/news/7095/ghosts-series5-confirmed/

LadyFannyButton · 25/12/2022 19:24

Its been a long wait…
So looking forward to this.

WeKnowFrogsGoShaLaLaLaLa · 25/12/2022 19:57

Oh my gosh, I sobbed and sobbed at that last few minutes. Beautifully done. ❤️

toomuchlaundry · 25/12/2022 19:57

May have something in my eye!

SequinsandStilettos · 25/12/2022 20:01

Bloody fantastic as always and yes, I am blubbing.

WWGDD · 25/12/2022 20:02

That was so so good. Tears streaming down our faces at the end.

LadyFannyButton · 25/12/2022 20:06

I had tears starting when Pat sneaked a peak and the penny dropped that his family were taking the mickey. It was lovely when Robin pointed out that Pat did it too, & so did the others about him having a face for being an ugly sister, but it didn’t mean they didn’t like him.
I was actually crying at the end.
Lovely, lovely episode.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 25/12/2022 20:07

Loved it. Anything with Pat makes me soppy.

toomuchlaundry · 25/12/2022 20:07

Glad it wasn’t just me crying!
