I had to sort out DD2- and didn't realise the thread was full.

I think Diego's kit might be green and yellow,

Oh great Prime show a replay instead of the tiebreak Hmm

Raahh · 12/09/2022 00:02

I nodded off Blush and am amazed at how long that set was.

Casper looks a bit fatigued

JaneJeffer · 12/09/2022 00:30

Chandler Bing!

JaneJeffer · 12/09/2022 00:36

Just remembered Matthew Perry was a good tennis player.

Oof Carlos!

JaneJeffer · 12/09/2022 00:37

He's nervous!

JaneJeffer · 12/09/2022 00:38

Vamos Carlos! Well done!

JaneJeffer · 12/09/2022 00:39

Aww

JaneJeffer · 12/09/2022 00:41

Security don't look impressed at having to clamber through the stands Grin

JaneJeffer · 12/09/2022 00:46

Hello Mac.

I wish Petch would quit comparing Casper to Borg.

Raahh · 12/09/2022 06:09

I fell asleep and woke up to see Carlos literally win the last point- looks like Casper ran out of steam in that set. I couldn't stay awake fir the ceremony so I will look it up later.

Well done to Carlos. It's incredible to think, how far he has come since losing to Rafa on his 18th birthday!

One thing that strikes me as interesting though, is that the US Open is the tournament where a 'new' player seems most likely to win a first slam- in the era of the big 3. Maybe its just coincidence, or perhaps it's the dominance of the big 3 at the other tournaments.

Delpo, Murray, Cilic, Thiem, Medvedev- all won their slams at the US Open. (Stan won his first in Australia).

Congratulations to Carlos- but well done to Casper- 2 slam finals in a year is no mean feat

I didn’t see any of the men’s final as I was so tired after staying up late to watch the women and I had to be up early for work this morning. Sounds like it was a good match. I wasn’t really bothered who won and it’s a great result for Carlos.

I noticed watching the women’s match that all the British presenters were wearing black.

Raahh · 12/09/2022 07:13

It's funny, Chessie the wearing black thing didn't really register on Saturday night, but it did last night- I'm not sure why.

A bunch of very worthy champions all round really- I love Iga, think Barbora is great- Joe Salisbury is equally underrated and I'm always glad to see Alfie Hewett win.

Hopefully Rafa will be back for at lest one slam- but I think the guard really is ( finally) changing after several false starts!

One thing I noticed with the coverage (although I did switch on late-ish to the women's final) was yesterday when I watched, it was Tim,Greg, Catherine chatting- and then straight to pictures of the players going on court. I had already watched the doubles match, there wasn't much of a gap and
usually before a US Open final, there is the whole 'star spangled banners' bit, and a flag, and the military- did they skip this- or did the beeb/Prime just not show it (not that I'm fussed if they didn't Grin).

So, another slam year over- and I can't believe how quickly it has gone- and if you had told me this time last year that Rafa would come back and win in Aus and RG, I would not have believed that at all the way last year ended(though greedily, I would have liked a clean sweep Grin). And he's going to be a dad! Grin

Fingers crossed the Australian authorities stick to their guns and keep the deportation rules in place- at least for one year - so Djok stays away in January. More time for others to get their feet under the table.

Next big question- who will make it to the Laver Cup? Casper was named on the team- Carlos wasn't (was he an alternate?) but Carlos might join up if Rafa/Roger aren't there.

Unfortunately I think they said during the match last night that Djokovic will be allowed into Australia Angry

Raahh · 12/09/2022 08:00
Angry Lock- why is it he is above their rules? I really don't get it? What exactly is so special about him anyway? Hmm The Australian authorities seem a bit spineless when it comes to making decisions- make a rule and stick to it. For everyone. It's not actually that difficult.

LockInAtTheFeathers · 12/09/2022 08:25

I don't know @Raahh- it's so annoying. The US Open has been a much more enjoyable tournament without him, though of course it hasn't stopped the commentators from banging on about him.

kazzaD66 · 12/09/2022 08:27

I didn't mind who won so congratulations to Carlos and commiserations to Raahh's favourite* *Norwegian!! Good call, there

kazzaD66 · 12/09/2022 08:33

Pressed the wrong button and posted before I meant to Blush
Good call with Ruud Raahh Grin
Would seem a bit odd that the world no1 and GS is not in the Laver Cup team Confused
Obviously, he wasn't those when the team was announced but he was up there, although he's at least 16 years too young to join in with the crumblies on the team Grin

IceandIndigo · 12/09/2022 08:42

Congratulations Carlos! I had a long day and had to go to bed after the third set, but wasn't surprised to see the result. Ruud had to be feeling pretty demoralised after failing to convert two set points and then losing the tiebreak so comprehensively. He played really well though, a worthy finalist. Can't believe Carlos has the number 1 ranking at 19!

Raahh · 12/09/2022 08:53

kazza it would be a bit strange now not to put Carlos in the team- and they really are going to need all the help they can get Grin. Carlos definitely is the real deal- and I do take all the credit for recognising the talent that that is Casper Ruud Grin.

I love how they kept talking about Casper's dad yesterday (like he was thier best mate duing their playing days) - as if he was a top 10 player- I mean , I'm sure he was lovely, but before the emergence of Casper, no-one really remembered him- let's be honest. It's not son of Borg or Korda league, is it Grin?

OP posts:
Raahh · 12/09/2022 08:55

I agree, it might have been a bit different had the 3rd set maybe gone Casper's way- it was a long set, and then the tie break just was all Carlos.

I miss Delpo. Sad

5 hours because of you Grin loved Frances saying Carlos was too good as well, just taking it on the chin. Good human persons.
