I’m really enjoying this but have to turn on the subtitles as I can’t understand the accents. Lots of mumbling too.

Saucery · 18/06/2022 19:19

David Morrisey is a bugger for mumbling. I spent a lot of Britannia suspecting he was being extremely cruel and devious but not entirely sure how.

😁😁 At long last, these are accents I can understand!

I've just watched the first episode - OMG I feel quite upset at how the miner's strike went - I was around at the time but busy with babies and not from the area so it seemed awful (not as much news in those days) but when I see the live footage (I'm not sure it's all live footage as surely people would not want to have themselves seen on tv) but the bits that are - horrendous. Such hatred all round.

Apart from that I love seeing so many good and wellknown actors. Bit complicated to follow but very convincing.

Blondeshavemorefun · 19/06/2022 08:15

I have subtitles on most stuff now as partially deaf but also they bloody mumble

I too am confused by the ages of Joanne Froggat and her father in law

Me too

Ridiculous casting

MrsLargeEmbodied · 19/06/2022 08:50

i initially got confused with the son about to go to prison and the son of the drug family,
also i thought i saw another man sleeping in the wooded tent. but must have been confused
so far all the bad mouthers are dead, (two)

MrsLargeEmbodied · 19/06/2022 09:40

i read the guardian recap, thanks for the link
it mentions st clair's brother, martin,
where did we see him?

TeenPlusCat · 19/06/2022 09:50

I'm confused because the old white men all looked the same to me, apart from Brian Lane from New Tricks and then he was bumped off

My bet for the undercover was the chap who was the coach driver in the strike, so it probably wasn't him as I'm usually wrong.

Piggywaspushed · 19/06/2022 10:19

I am annoyed this morning because Camila whatserface in the Sunday Times issued a bit of a spoiler in her review (not a massive one but not in the 2 episodes so far aired, and she has form).

Can we be careful on here please? I only learnt from MN that this is loosely based on real events. I don't think these events are particularly well known and journalists and lay people who know them often assume they are... so writing about real outcomes when I have studiously avoided them does constitute a spoiler (depending on how the dramatisation deals with it). I am not usually spoiler police but I have found out a couple of things from this thread that I didn't want to!

Can we stick to what has been in the episodes aired, and base any speculation on that, not on what we might already know?

This would be another example of a journalist knowing things from future episodes. He wasn't named in Episode 2, just fleetingly mentioned.

Saucery · 19/06/2022 12:50

I think the story is going to part company with the real events now anyway. Totally agree about spoilers though. I’ll be avoiding this thread until I’ve watched the next two episodes, just in case.

I don't think anyone can spoil it unless they have already seen further episodes which are yet to be broadcast. So pretty much rules out this thread

He was on a doorstep or opened the door when Joanna Froggat's character was handing out flyers.

If you look at the actor's (Mark Frost) profile on Imdb his character is listed as Martin St Clair.

Saucery · 19/06/2022 13:25

Ohhhh, right at the beginning? He was very short with her but not aggressive.

Yes that's it.

At the end of the 1st ep he's also listed as Martin St Clair in the credits.

Saucery · 19/06/2022 13:34

I just googled him and he’s one of those actors with a very forgettable face. He’s played 3 different characters in things like Casualty.

Hunderland · 19/06/2022 13:36

QuebecBagnet · 17/06/2022 21:28

I get Neil Morrissey and David Morrissey muddled up, they’re not related are they?

DH did the same 😂

Blondeshavemorefun · 19/06/2022 14:19

Agree no spoilers bit as it’s only watchable on Mon and Tue and not all on iPlayer then shouldn’t be any

The rl father gave no motive. I don’t think the drama is now going down the same road as rl. The writer has said it’s more about the impact of two violent crimes in a close community within a short space of time, as he lived there and has/had relatives who still do. Rl is rarely as neat and convoluted as drama so this is where the two narratives diverge.
He’s trying to shoehorn a lot of social and historical commentary into six episodes. Reminds me of GBH and Red Riding. You can recognise real people in those too (Hatton, Savile) but they are a fictional reworking.
I won’t compare the fiction to the reality on these threads though, as the writer and production team have made it clear they are not a true reconstruction of what happened and relatives of the murdered people aren’t entirely happy the situation has been dramatized.

It’s a case of old grudges running deep and do you really know your neighbours and relatives? Which is pretty universal as a dramatic trope.

Piggywaspushed · 19/06/2022 17:48

Yeah , it's more what happened/ happens afterwards - which was in Camilla Long's review.

placemats · 20/06/2022 11:42

Really looking forward to watching this tonight.

I think it's a fantastic production and I find this an historical moment in time - didn't live in England then.
