Yep, I also thought it was wrapped up nicely and doesn’t need another series. There does seem to be a trend for over-milking dramas and it’s not always necessary.

BracedlnEndIessJanuary · 28/06/2022 22:17

Was fine but a bit of a damp squib for me, as a finale.
in real life, the striking miner, who had a dedication at the end, was killed by a 'scab ' who was obsessed with him...but nothing to do with the strike, rather deluded thoughts about his house being damaged.
Even knowing that, and the Pointless reference, still disappointed that Scott had no other motive given the build-up.
Also, with respect, a second series is a terrible idea.

historyofthefuture · 28/06/2022 22:22

I loved it. There are a million other crime series out there that treat the great revealing / the big motive as the be-all and then everything gets wrapped up nicely. I loved how it showed the effects of damage through time, and what might be on the other side of that mess. (also that the reason it was so difficult to determine Scott's motive was...there was no motive; he was just a deeply unhappy and damaged young man).

Rosehugger · 28/06/2022 22:30

Yeah, I thought that was great too. It turned the usual murder mystery tropes on their head and focused on relatìonships instead.

I thought it was good, an angry young man opening up old wounds.

The thing that makes no sense to me is the 5 spy cops still being in touch and the one killing himself over being exposed.

WingingItSince1973 · 28/06/2022 22:52

Brilliant acting and all fell into place (for me). I thought Ian was going to just ring the number when they were all sat in the school hall and see who answers as he had his suspicions anyway. All in all I felt that yes the crime wasn't to do with the past but it was powerful point about how emotions are still so so raw after decades. It was a terrible situation all round. Its true what Julie said in the end that the government didn't care about them, they were quite happy to see them divided and fighting amongst each other. Awful times. As for a new series, could be good, though obviously need new crimes and villains.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 28/06/2022 22:56

i think there's another spycop still in the village and I reckon it's the bloke who used to be in casualty and was also in The Lakes in which he shagged the wife of Scott's dad who was in Downton Abbey with the wife who was killed in the second episode by Andy who starred in a film with the woman who was married to the bloke from Downton Abbey...

GorgonzolaSouffle · 28/06/2022 22:58

Very complicated
far too many characters

could have done 4 episodes.

4/10

BracedlnEndIessJanuary · 28/06/2022 23:26

Worth much more than 4/10 but could have been a two-parter, 2 hours each, and been much tighter.

I like James Graham though. Loved Quiz. Also saw his play This House in lockdown (national theatre online).

He hails from Mansfield, 6 miles north of Annesley woodhouse, where one of the murders took place. Mansfield is ex pit town, was staunch labour for decades, until became Tory a few years back. Also had one of the biggest leave votes in the country at 70%.

Might be interesting to look at that turn around in more detail, but I guess it was alluded to in the red wall comment in first episode. Certainly, never thought I would see the day.

leave

BracedlnEndIessJanuary · 28/06/2022 23:28

Random leave there.

(Although, salient advice to anyone still living there) <ducks for cover>

tiarax · 28/06/2022 23:36

I really did love this programme. As someone living in Mansfield and a child of a miner, I found the ending very touching to watch. This area has been built on the mining industry and to see so many mines close feels like our history has been lost forever. The programme perfectly reflected what happened in many families. Still to this day families are torn in two, with siblings not speaking. I can't wait to see what path series 2 takes; I think it would be interesting to explore the stress caused by the closing of mines in the area.

PuppyMonkey · 29/06/2022 07:23

I enjoyed it overall, think it lost its way at times and went a bit silly, but it was so beautifully shot and acted I forgive them.

Will be interesting to see what the writer focuses on next time. Racism is a HUGE thing in this area of Notts, so that would be a rich seam to mine if you pardon the pun.

And get more proper Notts accents next season.

Haven't seen such an engaging drama on tv for a while, reminded me of Unforgotten, another thoughtful series that doesn't rely on gore. I found each of the Unforgotten series were up to standard, which is a surprise as S2 of anything can disappoint if the first is good. I'm not sure about S2 of this. I foresee tormented domesticity and extramarital shagging being high on the agenda. Hopefully not, it's hard to maintain interest without a body under the patio if you know what I mean. However, if S2 keeps cast and writer together, fingers crossed 🤞

CoffeeWithCheese · 29/06/2022 11:22

I really enjoyed it and quite liked the reveal of whodunnit being just a bloody angry and messed up young man wanting to just hit out at whoever but it all reopening all the old wounds of the strike. Plus the area IS beautiful (I love driving around up the north of the county) and the people are fascinating.

I also really loved the comments in the pub about not being able to figure out if they were a northern ex-mining town or not northern!

placemats · 29/06/2022 11:56

I loved it. I can see a second series and would watch it.

The speech made by Julie Jackson (Leslie Manville) in the clubby captured the essence of the pointlessness of division.

Lorraine Ashworth was outstanding as Daphne Sparrow and there must be some consequences to her actions.

This ostensibly kind and caring community had many faults, some emanating from past actions.

Move on, forgive and always remember.

Ooh I loved The Lakes!

The Chef?

Wasn't the wife of "Scott's dad" in The Lakes played by the actress playing Ian's wife in this?

AlecTrevelyan006 · 29/06/2022 14:20

Ah yes, it was Clare Holman (Ian’s wife) that was in The Lakes

Yes and me

LadyEloise1 · 29/06/2022 15:41

It was good but I got a bit confused with the grey haired older middle aged men with stubble / beards. Who was who Blush
Not helped by missing Episode 5 due to the flipping tennis. Totally confused my recorder box. And me.
I recognised Ian, Kevin, Robert Glenister and Mr. Sparrow but there were two more I got confused about. One I think was Ian's brother.

LadyEloise1 · 29/06/2022 15:48

@Hunderland was the first to call out the spy cop on this thread. Well done 💐
I straight away agreed. Preens
