Binged it, loved it, binged it again to Shazam all the music!!

Anyone else watched it?

Gay, geeky teen falls in love with supposedly straight, popular, rugby playing lad. Just very sweet high school drama.

Alice Oseman has done side comics which show Nick and Charlie in the future, as proper adults with jobs, still in love and living together with a pet, So think it's safe to relax.

Where are those @DaisyWaldron? I thought I had read all there was on webtoons.

I don't read on webtoon, but there's another one called Adoption between 2-12 and 2-13, dated 16 June 2017.

Voted

Both Kit (Nick) and Joe (Charlie) are nominated for rising star. You can vote multiple times with different email addresses! (Joe himself suggested this on his Twitter.)

Allloveisbeautiful · 24/05/2022 16:15

I voted for both Kit and Joe using different email addresses and for Heartstopper as best show. Also
voted for All creatures great and small actor as I think it’s a lovely programme!

Yutes · 24/05/2022 18:09

I just binged Heartstopper and I found it remarkable heart warming. I loved that it was just a story about teens finding their way and no OTT nudity, sex or drugs. It was so good and well written. Charlie and Nick are just <3

LethargeMarg · 25/05/2022 07:23

I've voted and have voted for joe- think they're both brilliant (and think kit will probably win as he seems to have a massive fan base from social media stuff I've seen) but I think the fact that joe was an unknown with no previous tv work is amazing . I really hope they win for best show as well !! I've had the soundtrack on repeat as well. My kids tell me it's all anyone's talking about in school (secondary) - so we are all clearly very 'down with the kids' !!

Yes Kit does appear to have a massive fan base. His interviews and podcasts are very good though and he appears to be a very mature young man with his head screwed on. I hope that continues for his sake as it must all be very overwhelming as well as exciting…

I'm late to the party thread but joining in to chat about how much I enjoyed Heartstopper... I have been wondering if it's weird that I liked it so much (since I'm a straight woman in my mid-30s!) but I agree with what many of you said. It's a beautifully sweet and pure love story, it brings back memories of being a teenager - but it's kind of how i wish things had been rather than how they actually were! - and as a straight person I find it interesting to get an insight into how it might feel for teenagers who are questioning their sexuality. It also reminded me of friends I had when I was a teenager, none of my best friends were gay but I did have friends who came out as bi and then gay, and I remember being supportive but not feeling able to fully understand, so watching the show has made me think of them and has deepened my understanding of how they might have felt.

It's beautifully written and acted; I think Kit Connor as Nick is perfect casting. His face is so pure - almost angelic - and he conveys those complex emotions so well. A couple of scenes stand out; when he was apologising to Charlie for being confused, and (of course) when he came out to his mum. What a scene! I related to that as a mother actually; my son is far too young for now but of course there is a possibility that he could question his sexuality and/or come out as gay/bi/etc in future... I watched that scene wondering what I'd say and I thought Olivia Colman was perfect (did NOT look like she could be his mum though Grin)

I loved the sister character, thought she was brilliant and very realistic. She reminded me a bit of the sister in Fleabag for some reason.

Did anyone else find Tao extremely annoying?! He just seemed so self-absorbed and whiny. I like his quirkiness but apart from that can't really see the appeal. It's also ironic that he's straight but camp. I suppose the point is that camp guys can be straight and gay guys don't have to be camp.

Yutes · 28/05/2022 20:59

I like that Heartstopper challenges those views that @AnotherEmma has just mentioned though. Nick was too masculine and lad-dy to possibly be gay or bi.
Tao is straight (as far as we know so far) but camp and and there is more Thierry with feelings for his transgender friend. So there’s that question too.

but I just loved how this tv was filmed and how it made me feel.

Yes I agree, it challenges those stereotypes.
I suppose what I mean is that I want to like Tao, because he's quirky and camp, but I can't because he's too annoying - and it's not because he's camp. It's the self-absorbed whiny thing. Although I suppose that is quite realistic for a teenager Grin It's just a jarring contrast against Nick who is so lovely! I do love one thing about Tao; his excellent retorts against Harry the bully.

Yutes · 28/05/2022 21:35

Totally know what you mean! Grin

SarahAndQuack · 28/05/2022 22:18

I liked Tao because for me, his character perfectly conveys how being a teenager can be awful and full of drama even when it's not to do with bullying - I thought that was important in avoiding the rather moralising tone you get in a lot of YA stuff, that there are 'goodies' and 'baddies' and it's only the 'baddies' who could ever hurt you or make you feel bad for things you can't help. IME often bullies will say 'oh but I didn't really mean it' (as Harry does), and this show makes it so clear what a difference there is between a fake 'didn't really mean it' and Tao/Charlie, who really don't mean to hurt each other, but still do.

I also found his awkwardness totally plausible, so it didn't annoy me.

TigerLilyTail · 29/05/2022 02:27

I liked Tao. I did think he had that teenager thing of over-dramatising everything. He dealt with a lot when Charlie was being bullied, so I think it's natural that he was overly protective.

DaisyWaldron · 29/05/2022 16:24

And Tao was in a pretty shit position, from his perspective. He'd spent a lot of time time the previous year supporting both Elle and Charlie when they needed him, and then Elle left the school and Charlie (based on the info Tao had at the time) was starting to ditch him for a more popular friend, leaving their friendship group as just him and Isaac. And Tao's support of Charlie and Elle, along with his rather acerbic nature, was probably enough to draw the attention of various bullies, who would take advantage of his isolation.

WindUpBird · 29/05/2022 17:20

Just joining in to say how much I loved Heartstopper. And how I really can’t fully understand my intense emotional response to it, as a straight woman in her late 40s!! I’m rewatching it, I’ve bought and read the books. I just love everything about it…storyline, the main characters…. Everything. I really am obsessed, in a way that I don’t ever get about anything, not since I was a teen, probably!
I think, as others have said, it’s a certain sadness in looking back to those teen years of intense emotions and wishing I’d had such a lovely relationship then as Nick & Charlie do!
I’m evangelising the series to everyone I know, but not everyone is interested - so nice to find others here who relate 😁

@WindUpBird , I'm the same as you and enjoyed it so much. I love Kit Connor but have discovered he is the same age as my dd! I think he will have an amazing career when he finishes his A levels next month! I remember him well from Rocketman.

Yes I reckon he’s heading for a musical at some point… he was at the Elvis premier this week and it would be a good way to have a more versatile role

NotMyCircusNotMyCircus · 01/06/2022 07:35

I can only imagine that their agents phones are ringing off the hook at the moment.

I don't think I can see either Kit or Joe going to university in September!

Kit said in a recent interview uni is probably not going to happen and Joe is definitely set on making acting his career so I’m sure this is just the start (or continuation in Kit’s case) of a very successful career for them both!

LethargeMarg · 01/06/2022 17:35

I don't know where to link the clip but there's a very cute clip of Jessie j thanking joe Locke (in the audience) for helping her friend go through a hard time.
I've now exhausted every comic, book, repeat, playlist and am now spending far to much time imagining how the next series will be -and trying to work out who might play new characters and who might not be included . Spoiler Ben isn't really in book 3 or 4 though is in a Tori spring book that I think runs along a parallel time period but as the actor playing him seems very popular (and always with joe) I'm sure they'll try to write him in. Maybe he'll pair up with Imogen in an attempt to cover up his sexuality ???
