seen 3 episodes but not sure if i want to carry on, what with the camera trickery

hesbeen2021 · 21/04/2022 06:25

One of the best series I've seen recently

WhoWants2Know · 21/04/2022 21:09

Peppa Pig being the daughter threw me.

MyrtlethePurpleTurtle · 21/04/2022 21:32

Quite watchable except the Downton Abbey barrister 🙄

Gatekeeper · 21/04/2022 21:35

If you want to watch a cracking political drama try and catch the BBC series State of Play with Bill Nighy and David Morrissey. Bloody brilliant!

ApolloandDaphne · 21/04/2022 21:36

I haven't read the thread in case there are spoilers but I have downloaded the series to watch whilst travelling on holiday. It looks great. The book was published by the company my DD works for and I have a copy but for some reason I haven't read it.

ButterSageSpaghetti · 21/04/2022 21:54

End of episode 3 and I think I've got vertigo Confused

peonyjam · 21/04/2022 22:31

I read it a few years ago and couldn't put it down. I think it translated really well into TV and had been long enough since I read it that I didn't have my imagined characters to compare it to.
Does anyone know where Sienna Miller's characters incredible orange/rust coloured coat is from? I have been desperately googling it

@Sbqprules Michelle Dockery is from Chadwell Heath near Romford in Essex. The Downton Abbey RP accent is most definitely not her own 😂. She has previously given interviews in which she describes having to change her accent when she was younger and auditioning to stand a better chance of getting roles as having an estuary accent was getting her nowhere at the time. Watch her character’s accent in ‘The Gentlemen’ 😉

@peonyjam the coat is from a brand called ‘Ulla Johnson’ and is sold out. It was close to £1000 but you might find a ‘previously enjoyed’ one somewhere?

Netaporter · 22/04/2022 03:43

@peonyjam the coat product name is ‘Gwyneth’ hope you find one!

SapatSea · 22/04/2022 18:24

I watched 2 episodes and gave up. I read the book a few years back and thought it was ridiculous but it rocked along and I thought this would be a good easy binge watch but it's so stilted. Rupert Friend looks like Fearghal Sharkey and acts like he is doing a series of poses, very strange.

BriocheForBreakfast · 22/04/2022 18:29

Well I loved the book so I can't wait to watch it. I also loved Sarah Vaughan's next book called Little Disasters

Southeastdweller · 23/04/2022 08:29

I watched the first two and can't be bothered to watch anymore. It's trash, nice looking trash but still rubbish. Crappy dialogue and unconvincing performances, I just don't believe in any of it - reminds me a little of Acorn Antiques. Also there's not going to be any doubt that he did rape her so where's the suspense?

This review puts it much better than I can:

ClinkeyMonkey · 23/04/2022 09:14

@Southeastdweller I'm almost glad I watched the show now, just to be able to fully appreciate that reviewGrin Thanks for the link!

EarringsandLipstick · 23/04/2022 09:21

That's exactly the point.

There is doubt, based on which perspective you take.

However, it's not meant to be about suspense IMO. It's really about where boundaries were at that time; this confusion over consent - you see this played out as the series progressed.

I found it much more interesting & skilfully acted than I expected. I thought the courtroom parts were excellent.

I agree that the plot line with Michelle Dockery / barrister was silly & implausible but I was able to overlook it.

Sienna Miller was great. She was a dislikable flawed character & her realisation of what she had endorsed & accepted was very well done.

Overall, I thought it was good. (Ending a bit trite tho).

PuppyMonkey · 23/04/2022 09:23

Hmm, seems like the big twist is not as easy to spot as PP mentions. Wink

I enjoyed it.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 23/04/2022 11:03

stuck with it but would not recommend

BOOTS52 · 23/04/2022 14:38

I watched it but found it very boring and the acting nothing special. Kept watching it as I had started it but did not really enjoy it. Acting very wooden.

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 23/04/2022 14:40

It wasn't anything groundbreaking but I enjoyed it. Thought Sienna Miller put in a good performance.

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 23/04/2022 14:43

The son was annoying though with his constant 'Whitehouses always come out on top!'. Or whatever the family refrain was.

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 23/04/2022 14:49

I liked James' mum. She was played by the actress who played Cordelia Flyte in Brideshead Revisited. She often pops up in various period dramas as an emotionally stunted, quietly scary upper class woman. As she did in this!

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 23/04/2022 16:11

That didn't make sense.

Who would arrest and charge only on hearsay.

Sorry, trying to avoid spoilers. And the dialogue? Who speaks like this? If only I\d traded on currency that says was mine" Give me strength.

That house though....

I think that maybe was tbe point - an annoying indoctrinated child on tbe way to becoming an entitled man

oh for sure. I just don't usually have the urge to reach through the screen a clip a child's ear so every time he appeared I waited for him to irritate me!
