I enjoyed it, although the book was far better.

SomersetONeil · 27/04/2022 19:46

It felt to me like it was completely being set up for series 2. But who knows.

It’s such a different world. I know only a far-fetched story - but definitely a case of ‘be careful what you wish for’.

Sophie was (is) beautiful, with a degree from Oxford, and nabbed the most popular boy. But in doing so, was reduced to nothing more than his support person. How can that ever lead to contentment, or be fulfilling?

On realising she couldn’t, understandably, play that role and at that point, so embroiled in a sham marriage … her motivation to cut him down to size means she ends up doing the one thing she was always trying desperately to prevent happening - throwing her own children’s happiness/wellbeing/privacy under a bus.

A cautionary tale in picking a good man to be your husband and father to your children, rather than the ‘best’ man.

Had she come on here when the affair first came to light, she’d have been told in no uncertain terms to LTB.

Lemondrop2 · 27/04/2022 22:22

I was disappointed that Sophie was not more contrite when she met Kate at the end - I had expected her to have gone on more of a journey than that.

The whole: ‘I have been underestimated and overestimated my entire life … it was how I was raised’ script showed such a lack of self-recognition.

Basically, I wanted all those blond rugby girlfriends from school/ uni to be brought to book; Anatomy of a Scandal promised to do this for a bit and then bottled it.

Lovely clothes, though. And what a nice house.

That was her choice though.

She was Oxford educated, her kids were school age and they had full time help. She could have easily had some sort of career, even if more of a 'hobby', which suited her education and interests.

SomersetONeil · 28/04/2022 01:54

Yeah, exactly. That’s my point.

Be careful what you wish for (the attractive, wealthy, Alpha husband, who enables you to give up work and be a lady of leisure), because you might just get it.

I thought there was something in the early episodes about her wanting to do something more meaningful and him putting her down/telling her she couldn't do it? Or have I got muddled with another programme?

Sounds a lot ike Kate Middleton, also with (alleged) infidelity.

MarshaBradyo · 01/05/2022 07:12

I decided to give it another go and everyone was right it got much better

Really enjoyed the ending and thought the barrister was really good

Violetparis · 01/05/2022 18:14

Enjoyed the book and what I've seen of the series so far, have watched the first 3 episodes this afternoon. I like all the actors, think they are well cast.

Stripyhoglets1 · 02/05/2022 00:29

I've just finished it. Took until episode 3 to get hooked then just binged the last 3 in a row tonight!

xsquared · 02/05/2022 22:40

I think it was very well done with a strong cast.

Are we allowed spoilers now?

I agree with a pp about Sophie, not being contrite when she met Kate. Although I still felt a bit sorry for her as her marriage is a sham and she's not really done anything with her degree since.

GreenClock · 03/05/2022 00:20

The PM looked like Cameron - the same bland, pink face. And the PP was right about the Boris-lookalike who fell.

an interesting drama - great cast.

RichardsGear · 03/05/2022 00:29

I think they could've cast the young Holly as someone who bore at least a tiny resemblance to Michelle Dockery; she appeared to have grown at least a foot since she was at Oxford.
Very relieved that Sophie finally saw the light. Got me wondering if the Bullingdon arseholes and their antics were as a bad as the fictional Libertines (obviously we know about Cameron and the pig already!).

SomersetONeil · 03/05/2022 00:53

How to say you’re a rapist, without actually saying you’re a rapist: call yourself a libertine.

The first time I really remember coming across this term was in Sense and Sensibility - Colonel Brandon uses it to describe Willoughby (“the worst of libertines”).

State Of Play is a work of art. Such a great piece of television (ignore the terrible film).
Had to go and find Alexandra Palace after a scene with John Simm and David Morrissey. If you haven't seen it, go, do it now. It's one of the best things ever. And the cast! Simm, Morrissey, Bill Nighy, James McAvoy, Kelly MacDonald. Just wonderful.
I saw Michelle Dockery as Ophelia... coincidentally opposite John Simm and she was stunning. Also in Network at The National opposite Bryan Cranston.

colouringindoors · 03/05/2022 23:33

Well I thoroughly enjoyed it and thought Sienna Miller was great!

State of Play looks good - do you know where I can find it?

If you want to watch a cracking political drama try and catch the BBC series State of Play with Bill Nighy and David Morrissey. Bloody brilliant!

Do you know where I can watch it? Have tried iPlayer...

I want to see this too. However, I could only find it on Amazon Prime to pay for, which I haven't done.

MyrtlethePurpleTurtle · 08/05/2022 07:43

@thenightsky - Amazon Prine have a free 30 day trial - just remember to cancel!!

pilates · 08/05/2022 08:00

I really enjoyed it until it all came out about the barrister. Unrealistic.

If you still have a dvd player someone is selling the dvd on eBay for £1.74! It's seriously one of the best things ever on TV.

Dilraj68 · 08/05/2022 12:54

Just finished watching this too. I think they could have gotten an actress who looked a lot more like the younger Holly Berry. Kate Woodcroft didn't resemble her a bit. The young Sophie did resemble the present one. Sienna was brilliant though.

And yes, I wish they'd put the bloody lights on!

ActonBell · 10/05/2022 13:30

One of the many things that really infuriated me about this was that the twist could have been rewritten in a way that was much, much more convincing. Kate/Holly is a very smart person and would never do something so phenomenally stupid and self-defeating (even if he was convicted if anything was ever discovered the conviction would be overturned).

Why not, for example, have her refuse to take the case despite being an up-and-coming prosecutor in #metoo cases and then have someone else at her chambers take it? Cast another great tv actor like Nina Sosanya or Anna Maxwell Martin or maybe someone older like Anna Chancellor. Then Michelle Dockery’s character gets criticised in chambers for being apparently ‘scared’ of taking on the perfect case for her because of its political implications. Then she starts trying to interfere more and more because she can’t stay away from it. Lots of tense scenes with her colleague who is trying to prosecute the case - much better than the awful dialogue she has with her pupil (what was the point of that?)

You could still have the twist. Is she shying away from the case because of political pressure? No - it’s because she’s Holly [shocked face] It would still be unethical and dangerous because she should disclose why she can’t take the case and she shouldn’t interfere but it wouldn’t be as phenomenally stupid. Also having some women of different ages could allow for some scenes reflecting on how attitudes to sexual assault have changed over time.

Grrrr - this made me cross for lots of reasons. The cast deserved better.
